16 days after US boat capsize, missing Gujarat girl's body found
Ahmedabad: The devastating cost of illegal migration was laid bare once again when the body of a 10-year-old girl was recovered on a California beach. Mahi Patel had gone missing after a smuggling boat carrying illegal migrants capsized more than a fortnight ago.
Her 14-year-old brother Prince died in the same incident, while her parents remain hospitalized; one still in a coma.
The Patel family, who hailed from Mehsana district in North Gujarat, had paid over Rs 2.60 crore to human traffickers.
Mahi's remains were discovered by a passerby at the Torrey Pines State Beach, San Diego, on May 21. Her identity was confirmed through DNA testing, according to a statement issued by the California State Parks Department on Thursday.
Official documents from the investigating agency state: "The decedent was one of multiple passengers upon a panga (small fishing vessel) that capsized on May 5 at Del Mar Beach. A passerby on May 21 found human remains on Torrey Pines State Beach and contacted law enforcement. Her parents were notified of DNA testing confirming that the remains belonged to the decedent." The cause and manner of death are currently pending further investigation.
The boat had capsized due to rough ocean conditions, and emergency responders were immediately dispatched following a 911 call. At the time, Mahi was reported missing, while the bodies of Prince and at least two other migrants were recovered from the scene. Mahi's father, Brijesh Patel, was found unconscious and remains in a coma, while her mother, Sangita, is critically injured and hospitalised.
This tragedy is part of a broader case involving human smuggling operations targeting migrants from India, particularly Gujarat.
The Patel family had reportedly paid around Rs 65 lakh per person to traffickers who were operating from Kalol and were part of a larger human smuggling network that spanned Mexico, the US, and India.
The Patels were part of a group of 10 individuals, including four others from Gujarat whose identities remain unconfirmed.
US federal agencies have charged five individuals in connection with the case, including two Mexican nationals and three Americans.
The charges include "bringing in aliens resulting in death" and "transportation of illegal aliens for financial gain". One of the accused was previously deported in 2023.
According to available data, at least 11 Indian migrants have lost their lives in similar incidents since Jan 2022. The Patel family's journey, and its devastating outcome, is a heartbreaking reminder of the risks that families are willing to take to chase the American dream.

Virat Kohli's One8 Commune faces FIR in Bengaluru for smoking zone violation
A bar and restaurant co-owned by Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has come under legal scrutiny once again, this time for allegedly failing to comply with public smoking regulations. The Cubbon Park police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against One8 Commune, located near Kasturba Road in central Bengaluru, for violating provisions under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), according to a report by Deccan Herald. Police action came after obtaining court permission and was based on findings from a recent citywide drive launched on May 29 to crack down on smoking law violations. The FIR, registered on May 31, cites Sections 4 and 21 of the Act, which pertain to prohibition and penalties for smoking in public places, the report added. According to the police, during the inspection, officers found that the establishment did not have a clearly demarcated smoking zone, an essential requirement under COTPA. The case has been registered against the pub's manager and staff. (Also Read: 'No locker breach': SBI denies jewellery theft allegation by Bengaluru woman) In 2024, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had issued a notice to One8 Commune citing violations of fire safety regulations. Located on the sixth floor of Ratnams Complex on Kasturba Road near MG Road, the establishment had come under scrutiny for operating without implementing mandated fire safety measures or obtaining a fire department clearance certificate. The notice followed a complaint lodged by a social activist, prompting the Shantinagar BBMP officials to act. Despite an earlier notice, the pub failed to respond. The BBMP had warned of legal action if a reply is not submitted within seven days. Earlier, the establishment has faced regulatory issues. An FIR was filed at the Cubbon Park Police Station after the pub was found operating beyond permitted hours during police night patrols. Enforcement of helmet rule nets Rs 2.28 crore in Andhra's NTR
VIJAYAWADA: In a sustained crackdown on traffic violations, the NTR district police collected Rs 2.28 crore in fines over the past five months, from January 1 to May 31, as part of a rigorous road safety drive. The intensified enforcement followed directives from Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur, who urged strict implementation of the helmet rule for two-wheeler riders. Citing alarming statistics, the High Court noted that over 660 motorcyclists lost their lives in road accidents across the state in 2024. Check posts were set up at major entry points, including Prakasam Barrage, Ramavarappadu, and Kanakadurga Varadhi. Since January, police have issued nearly 90,000 challans for various violations such as riding without helmets, driving on the wrong side, and lacking valid licences. Officials said 62,128 challans issued in 2025 have already been paid, yielding Rs 2.28 crore in revenue. In comparison, of the 1.33 lakh e-challans issued last year, only 43,622 were cleared, bringing in Rs 1.88 crore. The remaining challans from 2024 remain unpaid. 'There has been a marked improvement in helmet usage,' said traffic police officials, noting the use of enhanced penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act. Enforcement is also being aided by CCTV surveillance and advanced cameras at key traffic signals. 'We identify violators using vehicle registration numbers and send notices. In some cases, commuters are fined on the spot,' they added.
