Soldier found dead in barracks was ‘degraded' by senior officers
A friend of Lance Corporal Bernard Mongan said 'bullying would be an understatement' as he described how the father-of-three was 'shouted, screamed and swore at', made to clean senior officers' cars in his own time and 'forced' to do extra runs in his lunch break without being given time to eat.
L/Cpl Mongan's decomposing body was discovered on January 23 2020 in his bedroom at Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, three weeks after he was last seen.
An inquest at North Yorkshire Coroner's Court has heard his cause of death is still 'unascertained' as decomposition made it difficult for doctors to determine.
On Tuesday, former corporal Stephen Timmerman, who lived in the same accommodation block as L/Cpl Mongan, told the hearing he 'wasn't treated the same way' as other soldiers in their squadron.
He said: 'He was given tasks that he shouldn't have been given, and just the general way he was spoken to by higher ranks.
'His seniors, quite a few times, he would be left to do their work for them in his own time.'
Mr Timmerman said he could remember three occasions when L/Cpl Mongan, 33, was given a military Land Rover to clean that was not his.
He said that on a military exercise around three months before his death, L/Cpl Mongan was 'shouted and screamed at' in front of other soldiers by his own superior officers in his own department for carrying out an order from another department.
Mr Timmerman, who has since retired from the Army, said: 'It was very aggressive, very abrupt, some swearing … It was very harsh language and it wasn't his fault, he was carrying out an order he was told to do.'
He said that on the same exercise L/Cpl Mongan was told to help other departments set up their radio masts but was refused help with his own and told to 'do it himself'.
Mr Timmerman said L/Cpl Mongan was put on remedial physical training after failing a fitness test, but was also 'forced to go for an extra run on the same day and given no time for having lunch and breakfast'.
He described L/Cpl Mongan as a 'cuddly teddy bear' who may have been a 'soft target' because he was 'a nice guy who took things easier'.
He told the inquest L/Cpl Mongan had issues with two sergeants and was 'undermined' and 'come down on very harshly', saying he had been considering a service complaint.
Asked if he was bullied, Mr Timmerman said: 'I would say that was an understatement.'
He told the hearing: 'They spoke to Bernie as if he was inconsequential,' adding that he had been spoken to 'like a piece of shit' and 'degraded'.
Asked if he was aware one officer 'had been posting videos on a WhatsApp group of humiliations of Bernie', Mr Timmerman said: 'I didn't know about that.'
The inquest heard L/Cpl Mongan had been selected for a detachment with 77 Brigade, which was due to start in January 2020, but that his room at Catterick would be kept for him while he was away so he could use it for visits with his three daughters.
Mr Timmerman said: 'There was a noticeable change in him, he was happy, he was ready to move away.'
The hearing was told L/Cpl Mongan had separated from his wife and spent Christmas at another soldier's house.
Mr Timmerman said he last saw him at the barracks on December 27, telling the inquest: 'He was very happy and couldn't wait to go for a detachment. He said: 'Have a good New Year, hopefully see you soon.''
The witness said he returned from a trip to Scotland on January 5 but was not expecting to see L/Cpl Mongan as he was due to be on detachment by then.
The inquest heard he started to notice an 'unusual smell' in the block after a few days, and on January 22 followed it down L/Cpl Mongan's corridor to realise it was coming from inside his room.
Mr Timmerman said the other rooms on L/Cpl Mongan's corridors were occupied but the soldiers were 'always away for work'.
He said once he realised where the smell was coming from he spoke to a superior officer about getting the keys for the room, and the two of them went in with a civilian staff member the next morning to find L/Cpl Mongan's body lying face down on his bed.
The inquest heard L/Cpl Mongan had tried to kill himself several times and spent time at a recovery centre run by Help For Heroes.
Former Royal Marine Jules Burnard, who struck up a friendship with him when they met at the facility, said he had last seen L/Cpl Mongan on January 1 2020, and that he had been 'very positive' and looking forward to the detachment.
Mr Burnard said L/Cpl Mongan had opened up to him about being bullied, and how that had affected his mental health.
He told the hearing: 'He was a loveable, likeable, upbeat person. There was nothing not to like about Bernie.'
The inquest, which is scheduled to last for three weeks, continues.

Russell Conn, who abused one boy so badly he tried to kill himself, has been convicted of abusing three more youngsters. A serial pervert football coach has been found guilty of raping a youngster and sexually assaulting two other boys - taking his total number of confirmed victims to seven. Russell Conn coached football teams for over 26 years and worked as a carer in a boys' residential school, a bus driver, a delivery driver and a painter and decorator. But he was secretly a serial sex offender who targeted teens when they were alone. He abused boys at locations across Scotland over a 26-year period, carrying out the sexual assaults in his work vans and in properties, and abusing one boy so badly he tried to kill himself. He was convicted of abusing three more boys at the High Court in Glasgow last week, having previously been convicted of child sex offences in 2022. His latest trial heard he repeatedly abused a boy when the youngster was aged 14 and 15. The abuse took place in Conn's vehicle, while it was parked near Ibrox Stadium. Between 2004 and 2005 he repeatedly abused another boy at Geilsland House School, a church-run residential centre in Beith, Ayrshire, which housed troubled youngsters. Conn worked at the residential school and the youngster, who was aged 15 and 16, was a resident at the time. Conn indecently assaulted him on a number of occasions. He repeatedly sexually assaulted another boy and raped him between 2013 and 2018 within vehicles and at addresses in Glasgow and across Ayrshire. The boy was aged between 15 and 19 at the time. And he raped the same boy when he was in his 20s, after forcing his way into his home in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, clamping his hand over his mouth and restraining him. Conn is due to be sentenced for the offences next month. His address was listed on court papers as Low Moss Prison, in Bishopbriggs, where he is serving the sentence was was given in his previous case. In 2022 he was jailed for nine years after being found guilty at the High Court in Paisley, Renfrewshire. The court was told he repeatedly targeted four teenagers. The court heard Conn, who was placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for life over that case, "groomed and abused boy after boy after boy after boy", leaving them "deeply damaged".. He was initially arrested and charged in 2010 - over abuse carried out on boys between 1995 and 2014 - after another teen reported abuse to police. His first trial heard Conn, of Stevenston, Ayrshire, knew one boy, who lived in a home, through the care system and tried to sexually assault him in Livingston after giving him £10 and a 10 pack of cigarettes. The boy said the incident happened on a bus which Conn had driven there. Conn admitted meeting the boy but denied he'd done anything wrong. He earned the trust of his victims and had sexual conversations with them before abusing them and often gave his victims money and cigarettes. The court heard he was guilty of "the grooming and manipulation and sexual abuse of teenage boys". His first victim said he blamed himself for the abuse and said he had planned to die without ever revealing what had happened. He said he "buried" what happened to him and "withdrew" into his "shell". He added: "I had made peace with myself and thought I'd take it to my grave with me. I put it in a wee box at the back of my head but there's barely been a day gone by where I've not thought about it." His second victim tried to kill himself within seconds of being forced on to a couch and abused in Conn's home. The dad of three said he is unable to hold down a job because of mental health problems and struggles to go to the toilet due to the abuse. And his third victim was discharged from the Armed Forces and spent time in a mental hospital after revealing the abuse he'd suffered at Conn's hands. A fourth victim had died before the case got to trial.

The man ran from sight when a police helicopter swooped over the remote area. His brother has now revealed Travis' 'violent' reaction when his family attempted to hold an intervention. Thomas, 35, told the Daily Mail that his brother tried to resort to violence during one family incident. Thomas found out that Travis was starting to abandon his family when he and his partner Whitney were beginning the divorce process. He said: "I told him, 'You can't leave your family like this. People get divorced all the time, if you are not happy in your marriage, that's okay." In a desperate bid to help Thomas and his father staged an 'intervention' with Travis at his house. He said: "We had hoped to have a good conversation with him - to ask him if he needed anything, any help, financial or otherwise. We are family, we want to help him and see what we could do to get him back on track. "'But things did not go well, he tried to resort to violence, because we were not supposed to be there and we just showed up unannounced,' said Thomas, who refused to elaborate further but clarified there was no physical violence." Thomas added: "The guy on the wanted poster for murdering my three nieces is not the brother I know. I can't even comprehend what is going on. I am in complete shock that he would do something like this. He loves his daughters – at least I thought he did. And Whitney is devastated beyond belief."
