UK threatens to sue Roman Abramovich over Chelsea club sale. Here's why
The UK government has warned it may take Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich to court, three years after he was forced to sell Chelsea Football Club. Sanctioned in 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Abramovich made a rushed sale of the Premier League team, with the £2.5 billion (nearly Rs 29,000 crore) from the deal frozen in a bank account. The UK now wants the money to be used to support victims of the war in Ukraine read more The United Kingdom is considering legal action against Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, three years after he was made to sell Chelsea Football Club. Britain imposed sanctions on Abramovich in 2022, as part of its measures against Russian oligarchs following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. This led to a rushed sale of the Premier League club and a freeze on the money from the deal. The UK government now wants the £2.5 billion (almost Rs 29,000 crore), still frozen in a bank, to be used to support victims of the war in Ukraine. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD ALSO READ | Signings, sackings and success: How Roman Abramovich transformed Chelsea Before the sale, Abramovich had said the money would go to a charitable foundation 'for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine.' However, the funds remain untouched, and the government says they have not yet reached the people who need help. What happened during the sale, and why is the UK now planning to take legal steps against the Russian billionaire? Let's get you the answers to these questions and more. Why the UK plans to take Abramovich to court The UK government has warned it may take Roman Abramovich to court, three years after he was made to sell Chelsea Football Club. The Russian billionaire was sanctioned in 2022, shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine. As a result, he sold Chelsea, then a two-time Champions League winner, to a group led by Americans Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital for £2.5 billion. In a joint statement, Treasury chief Rachel Reeves and Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the government was ready to go to court over the frozen funds 'The government is determined to see the proceeds from the sale of Chelsea Football Club reach humanitarian causes in Ukraine, following Russia's illegal full-scale invasion. We are deeply frustrated that it has not been possible to reach agreement on this with Mr Abramovich so far,' they said. 'While the door for negotiations will remain open, we are fully prepared to pursue this through the courts if required, to ensure people suffering in Ukraine can benefit from these proceeds as soon as possible.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Abramovich was sanctioned when the UK moved against what then-Foreign Secretary Liz Truss called 'oligarchs and kleptocrats' with close links to Russian President Vladimir Putin and 'complicit in his aggression.' The sanctioning of Abramovich in 2022 led to the urgent £2.5 billion sale of Chelsea Football Club. Reuters/File Photo Although the funds from the sale still belong to Abramovich, they are frozen and cannot be accessed or moved unless the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation grants a licence. The UK government insists the money must go to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. According to The Guardian, ministers are increasingly frustrated by the lack of progress in reaching a deal with Abramovich and are now prepared to take the matter to court. Explained: The 2022 Chelsea sale deal and what the UK government wants The sanctioning of Abramovich in 2022 led to the urgent £2.5 billion sale of Chelsea Football Club, under the condition that the money would be used to set up a humanitarian charity. But the funds remain frozen in a British bank, with no agreement yet between Abramovich and the government on how they should be spent. Sources told Reuters that the UK wants the money to be used only in Ukraine, in line with a broader European aim to make Russia pay for the destruction caused by the war. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Abramovich, however, wants the funds to go to all victims of the conflict. In 2022, the government approved the release of around £200,000 to cover legal and administrative costs for setting up the charity and hiring experts to plan the use of the funds. A new foundation was proposed to focus on humanitarian aid such as medical care, education, and shelter for Ukrainians, its acting CEO Mike Penrose told Bloomberg in 2023. Abramovich himself had suggested setting up the charity, stating that all net proceeds from the Chelsea sale would go to victims of the war in Ukraine. During Abramovich's time as owner, Chelsea's men's team won 21 trophies. Reuters/File Photo In May 2022, Chelsea was sold to a group led by American investor Todd Boehly and private equity firm Clearlake Capital. The UK has been working with the European Commission and the Portuguese government, since Abramovich holds Portuguese citizenship, to make sure that the deal meets sanctions rules and to decide how the money should be used. However, the process has been far from straightforward. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Notably, using frozen assets is legally challenging, and both the UK and EU are still exploring ways to use such funds to support Ukraine's recovery. During Abramovich's time as owner, Chelsea's men's team won 21 trophies, including two Champions League titles in 2012 and 2021, and currently holds the Club World Cup title. The women's team also ended this season with a league-and-cup double. With inputs from agencies

Chelsea coach startled as Mudryk is spotted in Poland ahead of Conference League final
WROCLAW, Poland — Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca seemed as surprised as anyone when he was told Mykhailo Mudryk had been spotted in Poland ahead of the club's Conference League final against Real Betis. Mudryk, who became one of Chelsea's biggest signings when he arrived for $108 million in 2023, hasn't played since it emerged in December that he was facing a doping investigation. Until now, the Ukrainian winger has kept a low profile but photos and videos on social media appeared to show him posing with fans Tuesday while wearing a jacket with the Chelsea badge. 'To be honest, I just, I don't know. He's here, or he's coming?" Maresca said, glancing around in surprise when asked at his pre-game news conference what he thought of Mudryk being in Wroclaw ahead of Wednesday's game. "He's here? I'm happy for Misha to be here. I don't know, just happy for Misha to be here.' Mudryk hasn't posted on social media since a statement about the case in December when he acknowledged an unnamed 'banned substance' had been found in a sample he'd given. 'I know that I have not done anything wrong and remain hopeful that I will be back on the pitch soon," he posted at the time. Neither Chelsea nor the English Football Association have provided any updates on the progress of the case since then. Mudryk could be awarded a medal from the Conference League final because he played in Chelsea's first four games of the league phase, scoring three goals. He scored in his most recent game, a 2-0 Conference League win over German club Heidenheim on Nov. 28. Mudryk signed an eight-and-a-half-year contract when he signed for Chelsea in Jan. 2023, keeping him at the club until 2031. soccer: /hub/soccer
