The Lake District's best-kept secret village that's just as beautiful as popular spots
As the warm weather approaches, summer holidays are becoming a priority for many Brits.
However, instead of splurging on an international trip, there's a hidden treasure right here in the UK that offers abundant beauty and tranquillity.
The Lake District, renowned for its lakes, historic towns, and mountains, is a favoured staycation destination. Yet, with a 900% increase in Google searches for 'hidden gems in England' over the past month, more individuals are seeking out lesser-known locations.

One such secret spot in the Lake District is Chapel Stile, a delightful village just a 20-minute drive from the bustling town of Windemere, and only 12 minutes from Ambleside.
Jerry Rebbeck, a local expert from Wheelwrights Holiday Cottage, commented: "People often miss out on a visit to Chapel Stile because of more well known destinations like Windermere and Keswick drawing in visitors instead.
"Chapel Stile is a peaceful hidden gem, and visiting it feels like going back in time. The village boasts picturesque views of the fields and fells surrounding it, overlooked by the beautiful 19th century church next to the river – which is how the village got its name.
"The village is also home to many of the famous Herdwick sheep, native to the Lake District, dotted calmly about the landscape".
Should you find yourself in Chapel Stile and in search of activities, Rebbeck has a few suggestions: "there are plenty of scenic walks, from large hikes to small strolls in the area, perfect for picnics in the summer.
"If you fancy something hot and homemade, there's the Wainwright's Inn at the edge of the village, a traditional and hearty pub, which started life as a farmhouse. Other recommendations include Slates Café and The Eltermere Inn, just down the road in Elterwater.
"Chapel Stile is also the perfect spot for book lovers and fans of William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, who both spent significant time in the village.
"Wordsworth would have stayed in the village often as he toured the Lakes, and his son is buried in the grounds of Holy Trinity Church.
"Beatrix Potter was a keen conservationist, and owned several farms near Chapel Stile, which she donated to the National Trust upon her death. The local landscape also inspired her illustrations."

LUCKNOW, India (AP) — A helicopter carrying Hindu pilgrims crashed early Sunday in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, killing seven people on board, officials said. The chopper was flying to Guptkashi, a prominent Hindu pilgrimage site in the Himalayas, from Kedarnath temple town, when it crashed. The accident occurred within minutes after the helicopter took off, officials said, on what should have been a 10-minute flight. Nandan Singh Rajwar, a local disaster management official, said authorities have launched a rescue and search operation and are expected to review operational protocols for flights in the region. The chopper, operated by Aryan Aviation, a private helicopter service company, went down in a forested area several kilometers (miles) from the Kedarnath pilgrimage route at around 5:30 a.m. local time. Officials said the crash was believed to have been caused by poor weather conditions. Kedarnath is home to one of the four most sacred Hindu temple shrines and receives tens of thousands of pilgrims each year during the summer season, many of whom use helicopter services due to the difficult mountainous terrain. Officials said the dead included the pilot and pilgrims from the neighboring state of Uttar Pradesh and western states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The bodies were badly burned in a fire that followed the crash, they said. Helicopter mishaps are not uncommon in the treacherous Kedarnath region, where sudden weather changes and high-altitude flying conditions can pose risks. On June 7, a helicopter operating in the Kedarnath Valley made an emergency landing on a highway due to technical fault shortly after taking off. The pilot was injured but all five passengers on board were unharmed. On May 8, a helicopter crashed in Uttarkashi district, killing six people, including the pilot. One person survived. Error! TODAY Dads on Working Dad Guilt and How They Make Family a Priority
The TODAY dads had an early Father's Day celebration with a heartfelt chat, some craft cocktails ... and even some friendly competition in New York City's Central Park. After Craig Melvin, Al Roker, Carson Daly, Willie Geist and Peter Alexander raced rowboats near Bethesda Fountain, they relaxed at the Central Park Boathouse, exchanged a few dad jokes and talked about fatherhood. Many of the anchors spoke about how becoming a father impacted their travel schedule for work. 'When the kids were younger, I was traveling a lot more than I do now. And this guy gave me some solid advice a few years ago,' Craig said, gesturing to Carson. 'You have to travel last minute and you miss some stuff, and you start feeling guilty about it. And Carson was like, 'It's not about quantity, it's about quality.' Make the time that you're there memorable,' Craig said. Together with his wife, Lindsay Czarniak, he is raising son Delano, 11, and daughter Sybil, 8. When Peter gets a call to travel somewhere on a Friday, all he can think about is wanting to be at home on the weekends with his family: wife Alison Starling, 11-year-old Ava and 10-year-old Emma. 'We're going to barbecue something, we're going to put on some Morgan Wallen. I have FOMO. I don't want to miss out on that,' he said. 'So I'm going to fly in the morning and fly back that night.' Before Willie had kids, he used to extend work travel to visit friends. 'The minute Lucie was born — so 18 years ago — it was like there was this homing beacon placed right in your chest,' he said. 'And the minute you were done with the interview or whatever it was, it was like, 'I got to get to the airport.'' The pull was even stronger once they added son George to the family, he shared. 'Well, we also do it because we can do it,' said Carson, who, along with wife Siri Daly, is raising four kids: son Jackson and daughters Etta, London and Goldie. Carson turned to Al and added, 'Your dad was a bus driver. He couldn't just take off.' 'My dad was just constantly working,' said Al. 'I remember a couple of times he would call us in and he says, 'Listen, Dad's got a chance to do some overtime. You're not going to see me tonight.' And he would sleep at the depot.' On the other hand, Al said that one of his fondest memories was when his dad would let Al ride the bus for eight hours while he drove. 'It was long before Take Your Kids to Work Day,' he joked. 'I used to hold it against my dad for a long time because he worked third shift as a mail clerk,' said Craig. 'It's not until you get older and you have your own children, and you have to work to provide for them that you understand the sacrifice, you know? But back then it was like, 'Oh, Dad's not at my Little League game.'' Each of the TODAY dads plans to spend this Father's Day in a slightly different way. Al, who is a father of three to Courtney, Leila and Nick and grandfather to Sky, Courtney's daughter, plans to spend the day at the grill while upstate with his family. 'It's funny,' said Al. 'Deborah (my wife) keeps saying, 'Why are you cooking?' I said, 'Because this is my happy place. I love to do this.'' 'God was smart. God put one of the four golf majors on Father's Day weekend,' Carson joked. 'So our United States Open will be on. I watched it with my father, and I will force my children to watch it with me. We'll have a fire burning in the fireplace, there'll be a cold beer involved. Definitely some barbecuing.' Willie shares that his Father's Day plans are 'up to the kids. So I don't know what I'm doing. But I do know that I'm lucky enough to have my father about 30 minutes away. I'll get to be with my kids and then we can all get in the car and go be with my dad. So that is a blessing.' For many dads, Father's Day is a day to 'peace out and go play golf, disappear till dinner,' Peter said. 'In our house, it's the opposite. Everybody's here. We're all together. I don't care what the plan is, we can do anything you like, we're just going to do it together.' 'As I get older, my favorite pastime is doing absolutely nothing,' said Craig. 'So I have asked my family to allow me to do absolutely nothing.' 'Or you just play (golf) really early,' joked Carson. 'I can be home by 9.' 'Wow. Now I guess we know what you're doing!' joked Al. Carnival cruisers get scam alert; Celebrity Xcel homeport revealed
As summer travel season kicks into high gear, travel scams are picking up, too. If you're cruising this summer (or anytime, really) it's important to be aware that scammers continue to use convincing tactics to defraud cruisers and other travelers. Related: Carnival Cruise Line rep addresses a troubling tipping rumor While scammers often target travelers who are looking to book cruises, hotels, or flights with legitimate-looking fake booking websites that offer enticing deals, that isn't the only tactic they use. These tricksters also prey upon travelers who need to get in touch with their cruise line, hotel, or airline about their existing reservation. One Carnival Cruise Line passenger recently posted a warning about this kind of scam on Reddit. It's one that's very easy to fall for, and although it isn't a new travel scam, it's on the rise again as travelers take summer cruises and other trips. And it's not just Carnival cruisers who are being targeted with this sophisticated scheme. Royal Caribbean cruisers have reported falling for it, or nearly falling for it, too. Good morning, here's your cruise news for Friday, June 13th. A Carnival guest is warning others after nearly falling for a phone scam while trying to fix an online check-in issue. Yes, she called what appeared to be a Carnival number found on a Google search, but it turned out to be fake. The scammer offered to rebook her cruise for $1,000 less under a bogus bulk room promotion. She hung up and confirmed with the real Carnival that it was just a scam. Carnival has now locked her account to prevent any tampering. Passengers are urged to double-check phone numbers and avoid deals that seem too good to be true. And to be clear, this trend is happening with many cruise lines, hotels, and airlines, not just Carnival. The 90,000-gross-registered-ton ship completed a 19-night transpacific crossing and started its Alaska sailings yesterday, June 12th. The ship will operate 11 round-trip cruises from Seattle through late September, visiting ports like Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Glacier Bay.
