Crinums start Telkom Netball League title defence with back-to-back wins
Free State Crinums started the defence of their TNL title with a 58-46 win over the Spar Baby Proteas (in white) at the Sun City Superbowl on Saturday.

Free State Crinums laid down an early marker in the defence of their Telkom Netball League (TNL) title with back-to-back wins as the 2025 season tipped off at Sun City Super Bowl in the North West Province at the weekend.
They powered past the Limpopo Baobabs with a 68-34 win on Sunday, after seeing off the Spar Baby Proteas 58-46 in Saturday's opening match. Crinums skipper and Proteas star Refiloe Nketsa has led the charge for the defending champions.
Home team the North West Flames also got their campaign off to the perfect start. They stunned the Jaguars, last year's beaten finalists, 60-57 in a nail-biting opening match for the Gauteng giants on Sunday.
Goal attack Sunel Smit was named Player of the Match for her fine shooting display as the teams matched each other shot for shot.
The Crinums showed their intent to defend their title from the first tipoff and were clinical in execution on attack and in defence against the junior national team on Saturday. They pulled away after a competitive first half to secure a comfortable victory.
Crinums coach Martha Mosoahle-Samm said: 'I think it was a good game considering that this game was against the Spar Baby Proteas. They were busy working hard, having lots of camps and we can't go there undermining them.'
Meanwhile, the Baby Proteas made a promising start to a tournament they are using as preparation for the Netball World Youth Cup later this year.
The Flames had opened their account against the Zambezi Eagles from Zimbabwe, securing a hard-fought 51-46 win on Saturday. Despite the Eagles' relentless efforts, the Flames held their nerve in the dying minutes to clinch the victory.

Amajita, as they are affectionately known, beat Morocco 1-0 in the final thanks to a second half goal from midfielder Gomolemo Kekana. The achievement marks a remarkable turnaround in age group football in the country, as the team had failed to qualify for the previous two editions of this competition, and the last time the SA side had made a final was back in 1997. SA coach Raymond Mdaka says their success was largely down to a collective effort between the players in his squad and the coaching staff. But we also want to thank everybody from the players to the technical team. Starting from the first games in the group stages, you can even the margins in the results, you can see it was [consistently] 1-0. Thank God, we were able to go through on the journey until we came to the final and ended up winning the final," Mdaka said. There were also individual accolades to celebrate as defender Tylon Smith, who scored the winning goal in the semi-final against Nigeria, was named Player of the Tournament. Fletcher Smythe-Lowe, who produced a Man of the Match performance in the final, was also awarded as the prize for the tournament's best goalkeeper. The victory was made even more extraordinary as a number of key players, such as Shandre Campbell, who plays for Club Brugge in Belgium and Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi could not join the team for the tournament due to club commitments. The next big assignment from Mdaka's team is the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile in September.

Netball prodigy off to provincials
With her eyes set on the ultimate goal – to one day play for the U21 SPAR Baby Proteas – Khumo Segopolo is ready to take on the challenge, as she has been selected for the Gauteng team to participate in the South African Schools Netball (SASN) All Ages Netball Tournament hosted at Hoërskool EG Jansen in June. Khumo recently made her debut as a junior player for the Southern Gauteng Netball Team at the Inter-Provincial (IPT) Indoor Netball Tournament in Cape Town in April, alongside some of the best action netball players in the country in the Junior League Montague. Her journey as a junior in such a high-performance category makes her a player to keep your eyes on. Also read: Netball starlet triumphs at provincial tournament Khumo shared that starting to play at the age of 11, she was fortunate to have a mother who has experience as a provincial and national player who assisted her with extra training sessions outside of her normal practices. She adds that she feels most confident playing as a goal attack (GA), as she knows that this position plays a crucial role in the attacking third, often working together with the goal shooter to create effective offensive plays. The future looks bright for young Khumo as her eyes are set on representing South Africa in the 2026 Emirates Dubai 7's Netball Tournament for the junior Proteas team. Gauteng Fireballs scorch through first week of Telkom Netball League unbeaten

Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix The Golden Fireballs ended the first round of the Telkom Netball League (TNL) 2025 at the Sun City SuperBowl, as the only unbeaten team, topping the Division 1 log. Defending champions the Free State Crinums are firmly in the frame. However, a shock 57-49 capitulation against invitation side the Zambezi Eagles yesterday put a damper on their title defence. The result does not count towards the log standings, though. The Eagles flew out of the blocks to lead 21-5 at the end of the first quarter and 34-15 at half-time. The Crinums slowly clawed their way back into the game, however, pulling within 13 points at the end of the third quarter. The deficit proved just too much to overcome for the Free State side in the end, as the Zimbabwean team kept their cool to secure the upset win. Crinums coach Martha Mosoahle-Samm admitted that her side had underestimated their rivals. "We had a terrible start but I'm going to take good lessons out of this," she said in her post-match interview. "After being 19 goals down and coming back and just losing by eight goals, I think the championship mentality is there. Thank God this one doesn't count. "We took a dip and it happens in a very long leg like this. And well done to the Zambezi Eagles, they came very hard at us. "We struggled a lot with their style of play. I think we adapted a little too late, so lesson learned. We learn more when we lose than when we win." The Fireballs once again showcased exceptional composure and creativity in securing a 62-57 win over the North West Flames in their last match of the first round on Saturday. They took an early lead in the first quarter and maintained that momentum. Player of the Match Owethu 'Sammy' Ngubane scored four out of four Telkom Supershots, worth two points, for the Fireballs and Caitlin du Plessis scored three for the Flames. Fireballs coach Dr Elsje Jordaan said: "Well done to the Flames, I thought they brought their A- game, and they really gave us a great match. These are the games that we need to prepare, and the fight that the players showed was tremendous." "We put a plan in place (for the Supershots), and Sammy played it well. Giving confidence to shooters is key." The Flames were able to bounce back from Saturday's defeat with a 58-56 win over the Aloes early on Sunday morning. The result consigned the Aloes to back-to-back losses. They were mauled 57-47 by the Gauteng Jaguars on Saturday. The Aloes led 12-10 in the first quarter, but the Jaguars made a remarkable comeback. Aloes coach Sameshia Esau said: "We had a good start, but the Jaguars came back strong in the second quarter. "The third quarter was the turning point, and the Jaguars dominated the last quarter. Individually, our players performed well, but we need to work on consistency and goal-shooting percentages." The Aloes are still searching for a first win of the competition. The Jaguars, last year's beaten finalists, have lost three of their six matches so far. However, they have only grown stronger as the competition has progressed. Coach Rozanne Matthyse said after the win over the Aloes: "We worked on some things, and I'm happy that we got those things done. "I knew we were going to win this game, and we pulled through. I'm happy with the performance and well done to the Aloes for giving us a good game, especially in the first three quarters." The Jaguars' defensive effort was impressive, with nine intercepts. Jamie van Wyk was named Player of the Match. Power Week 2 takes place from June 13 to 17.
