Belfast hotel launches ‘once-in-a-lifetime' £1,000 cocktail
A Belfast hotel has launched a £1,000 cocktail which it described as a 'once-in-a-lifetime experience'.
The pricey tipple at the Merchant Hotel has been described as a 'masterpiece of Irish whiskey'.
The Belfast city centre hotel earned the Guinness Book of Records title for the world's most expensive cocktail in 2007 with its £750 Mai Tai.
However, that was overtaken in 2013 by a cocktail which was sold for £8,583 in Melbourne, Australia.
The Merchant Hotel launched its new cocktail menu on Wednesday, including a collection crafted with rare whiskeys by Midleton, Macallan and Michter's, which start at £785 and go up to £1,000.
The most expensive, the Midleton Foret de Troncais (£1,000), is described as 'a masterpiece of Irish whiskey, aged in rare French Troncais oak casks and delivering elegant notes of honey, toasted almonds and delicate spice' served with Antica Formula and Dubonnet.
The menu, consisting of drinks which start from £14.99, was created by a team led by the Merchant Bar's general manager, Aaron Dugan and cocktail bar manager Emily Doherty.
Mr Dugan said: 'We are proud to bring our unique collaboration with three icons of whiskey to life with The Rare & Refined Collection.
'These exceptional drinks have been crafted to create once-in-a-lifetime experiences to be savoured. The lucky few that get to try these drinks will get to relish something truly special.
'And, for those that find the price tag too rich, we have also created an exceptional collection of 21 cocktails, inspired by timeless classics, but with a unique Merchant twist. Named according to their flavour profile, the menu has been designed to help customers match their preferred flavour profiles to their choices. There truly is something to suit every taste.'
The cocktail bar at The Merchant has been described as one of the most decorated in the UK and Ireland, and is the first and only bar in Northern Ireland to be awarded the coveted 2 Pin status by the Pinnacle Guide.
The Merchant will officially receive its 2 Pin award later this month.

The Blockchain Group Starts 300M-Euro ATM Share Sale to Expand Bitcoin Holdings
The Blockchain Group (ALTBG), a tech firm that brands itself as Europe's first Bitcoin Treasury Company, announced a share-issuance program worth up to 300 million euros ($342.5 million). The capital raise is structured as an at the market (ATM) program and backed by French asset manager TOBAM, a longtime investor in both bitcoin BTC and the Paris-listed company on behalf of clients, Blockchain Group said in a press release. The program allows TOBAM to buy new shares at its discretion, based on daily market conditions. The price of each tranche will be the higher of the previous day's closing price or its volume-weighted average price, with purchase volume capped at 21% of the day's trading activity, the firm said. Proceeds are expected to be used to purchase bitcoin, furthering the company's stated goal of increasing its 'bitcoins per share' metric over time. The Blockchain Group started buying bitcoin in November. Since then, it has amassed 1,471 BTC at an average price of $102,507, it said June 3. Unlike typical ATM programs in the U.S., which use brokers to sell stock into the market, TOBAM is acting in its own interest, not as an intermediary. It will decide whether to hold or sell the newly issued shares on its own criteria and won't be compensated by the company for participating. If fully executed at recent market prices, TOBAM's stake in the company could rise from 3% to over 39%. A shareholder vote scheduled for June 10 could expand the capital raise to 500 million euros. Shares in the company, which has a market cap of 543 million euros, have risen 20% today to 4.9 euros. L'Oréal acquires a majority stake in British skincare brand Medik8
L'Oréal has acquired a majority stake in the UK's Medik8 as it seeks to expand its position in the skincare market, the French beauty giant confirmed on Monday. As part of the deal, private equity firm Inflexion will remain a minority shareholder, and the current management committee will also stay in their roles. The cost of the stake is officially undisclosed, although the Financial Times reported last week that the potential deal was worth around €1bn. L'Oréal's share price was roughly unchanged on the news. 'We are delighted to welcome Medik8 to the L'Oréal family,' said Cyril Chapuy, President of L'Oréal LUXE. 'As a premium skincare range, with high levels of proven efficacy at an accessible price point, Medik8 perfectly complements our existing skincare portfolio,' he added. L'Oréal has been seeking to capitalise on the boom in science-driven skincare, partly driven by social media influencers. Brands already under its 'Dermatological Beauty Division' include La Roche-Posay, Cerave, Vichy, Skinceuticals, and Skinbetter Science. Related L'Oréal acquires Galderma stake and targets the injectables market The Body Shop goes into administration, with hundreds of UK jobs at risk This unit brought in over €7bn in revenue in 2024, representing an almost 10% year-on-year rise, making it L'Oréal's fastest-growing division. Seeking to expand its portfolio, L'Oréal bought soap maker Aesop in 2023, and Korean beauty brand Dr.G in December. Last year, L'Oréal also acquired a 10% stake in skincare firm Galderma, as well as acquiring the beauty licence for Miu Miu. At the time of the Galderma deal, the French firm said it was 'increasingly investing in a more holistic approach, spanning the entire beauty routine' — thereby 'anticipating and intercepting the signs of skin ageing'. Medik8, founded in 2009, specialises in anti-ageing treatments and was bought by UK-based private equity firm Inflexion in 2021.
