Researchers have plenty to learn from focusing on African genetics, but 'the world is not structured that way,' Ene-Obong says.
He is driven to change that structure with the goal of conducting millions of genetics tests in Africa—and has partnered with governments, companies, and hospitals to do exactly that. Testing has taken place over the past year as part of research, and this summer, Syndicate Bio will offer genetics tests that evaluate a person's risk for cancer to the public at a relatively affordable price point. Africa makes up nearly 20% of the global population, yet only a tiny fraction of genetics data comes from this continent. As a result, the best biomarkers to identify cancer risk remain unclear, and new treatments don't account for African genetics. 'Many of today's cancer drugs are based on clinical trials that didn't involve African populations,' Ene-Obong says—a lack of representation that likely contributes to people of African ancestry dying of cancers such as liver and colorectal at higher rates than Caucasians, even when controlling for socioeconomic status. 'There are huge disparities,' Ene-Obong explains. His efforts are enabling greater understanding of disease-causing variants in people around the world. 'It will drive precision medicine for all.'

Ocean currents can generate electricity – and our study shows Africa's seas have some of the strongest

The world's oceans cover more than 70% of Earth's surface. They're filled with currents, some much stronger than the fastest flowing large rivers. These currents can be harnessed as clean, marine renewable energy. Marine energy is much more predictable and reliable than many other forms of renewable energy because unlike sun and wind, which regularly do not produce electricity, ocean currents never stop moving around the planet. New research has found that the eastern and south-eastern coasts of Africa have currents that put them among the world's top potential locations for ocean energy production. Researchers Mahsan Sadoughipour, James VanZwieten, Yufei Tang and Gabriel Alsenas explain what is needed to bring renewable marine energy into African countries' electricity mix. Ocean currents contain kinetic energy that can be converted to electrical power using turbines. This is similar to offshore wind farms, or wind turbines positioned in the ocean, that convert wind to electricity. The difference is that converting ocean currents to energy means the turbines would float on the surface or just under the surface of the ocean. The electricity they generate can be brought to shore using power cables under the sea (as is currently done with wind turbines in the sea). It could also be used to generate hydrogen offshore which could be transported and used as fuel. This would eliminate the need for subsea cables. We looked at 30 years of water velocity data – measurements of how fast the water moves (currents). We got the data from drifting buoys in the ocean. These devices are fitted with meteorological and oceanographic sensors that have been sent into the ocean. There are 1,250 of these buoys floating around the world's oceans today. They are designed to follow the water circulation in oceans so that they can constantly measure the speed and direction of ocean currents. They aren't blown around by the wind. They transmit information about ocean currents via satellite so that it can be made publicly available and used by scientists. We looked at 43 million measurements of ocean current speed and direction at specific locations and times over 30 years. From this, we were able to calculate the amount of energy stored in every metre squared of the ocean. This is known as energy density. This is a foundational step in determining the potential of ocean currents for generating clean and renewable energy. Our research is the first time this information has ever been generated. Prototypes have been developed and tested at sea from as far back as 1985. But there are no ocean current turbines feeding power to electrical grids at present. This delay between testing the prototypes and getting turbines up and running has happened because of the technical challenges in setting up these systems in deep water offshore environments. Developers have recently made new advances, however, improving the undersea cables and the microcomputers used in ocean current energy systems, and enhancing the design of the turbine blades. There have also been advances in developing stronger anchors for these systems. Engineers in South Africa and Mexico are also investigating the potential of ocean current turbine systems. We've identified high energy areas in the waters off Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania and Madagascar. They have some of the most energy dense currents on Earth, higher than the standard for wind energy resource to be classified as 'excellent'. These are potential sites for ocean energy production. An area in the ocean off the coast of South Africa also has potential. For example, we found areas with power densities ranging from 500 to 2,500 watts per square metre over an area around 800km by 30km off South Africa and around 2,000km by 30km off Somalia, Kenya and Tanzania. To put this into perspective, the average small household in South Africa uses on average about 730 watts of power. Therefore, every metre squared in the ocean that generates power could provide enough power for one small South African household. Read more: More research is needed, however. This is because we haven't been measuring the currents in the Indian Ocean as long as we have for other oceans. For example, Pacific Ocean currents have been measured since 1979 but the Indian Ocean currents have only been measured since 1994. Also, most of these high-energy areas are located in relatively deep water (over 1,000 metres deep). This could make it challenging to install ocean current turbines. On the positive side, these areas are relatively close to shore. There are also areas off South Africa, Somalia, Kenya and Madagascar where strong ocean current energy densities are found in waters as shallow as 100 metres. There is a good chance that relatively shallow and nearshore locations such as these will be the first places where ocean current based electricity will be generated off Africa. Scientists all over the world are conducting research into how to use the oceans' waves, tides and currents to generate energy. So, what's needed is for the projects to be developed. Usually, this starts with a project developer, community or electric company setting up a business to attract investment to get the project started. Then more technical work will be needed. This includes measuring the ocean currents closely to select the precise locations for the turbines, and figuring out how to connect the turbines to shore. The project developer then needs to bring everything together. Each project will cost a different amount, depending on how big it is and what technology is needs. Finding the start-up funds could be a challenge. The other stumbling block is that the technologies to harness ocean currents are not commercially viable yet. But they are developing fast. Ocean current energy is a compelling prospect for African countries in times of climate change. Bill Gates is moving forward with plans to give away $200 billion over the next 20 years, and the billionaire now says the "majority" of that money will go toward improving public health and education services in Africa. Gates announced on May 8 that he plans to give away nearly all of his personal wealth and shutter his nonprofit Gates Foundation by 2045. On Monday, Gates offered some more specifics: "The majority of that funding will be spent on helping you address challenges here in Africa," he said in an address at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. That spending will be directed toward initiatives that address the three main goals Gates outlined in his May announcement: Africa particularly needs health and education resources: Nearly half a billion people there live below the poverty line, according to 2021 data from the United Nations. Improving global healthcare and education have long been major focuses of Gates' philanthropic foundation, which he launched with now-ex-wife Melinda French Gates in has publicly asked world governments to increase aid funding to African nations, noting that "there's less money going to Africa at a time when they need it," he told The Associated Press in September. In a May 8 blog post, he called out wealthy nations, including the U.S., for cutting "tens of billions of dollars" from their global aid budgets over the past two years. "No philanthropic organization — even one the size of the Gates Foundation — can make up the gulf in funding that's emerging right now," wrote Gates. On Monday, Gates lauded African government leaders, health workers and development organizations who partner with his foundation for embracing "innovation" with limited funding, citing insecticide-treated mosquito bed nets for fighting malaria and artificial intelligence-enabled ultrasound technology for identifying high-risk pregnancies. "I've always been inspired by the hard work of Africans even in places with very limited resources," said Gates. "The kind of field work to get solutions out, even in the most rural areas, has been incredible." The Gates Foundation opened its first African office in Addis Ababa in 2012 and has since added offices in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria and Senegal, the foundation noted in its press release detailing Gates' address at AU headquarters. Aid workers say USAID cuts are putting the lives of children with HIV at risk

Nearly 200 children live in a hillside village on the border of Kampala, Uganda. They are given food, shelter and an education at the Light the Future Foundation, a school and orphanage founded by Patrick Ssenyondo. The organization provides critical care for HIV-positive children who have been left by their parents in the east African country. "Most of the children here lost their parents, and those that have them, they can't take care of them," Ssenyondo told ABC News. "They can't pay their tuition, they cannot pay for their medication, they can't pay for food." The children, who are facing the unimaginable, now have another blockade to survival. On Jan. 20, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that suspended foreign aid for 90 days. Later came the termination of several foreign aid contracts, which have upended facilities and organizations like the Light the Future Foundation. Ssenyondo told ABC News that his foundation used to have a month's supply of medication prior to the cuts. Now, he's resorted to rationing the children's medication, only having a week's supply since the cuts have taken place While no child has died at his center, the children's 28-year-old teacher, Ms. Mary, passed away after Ssenyondo says she wasn't able to access her antiretrovirals -- a result of the USAID cuts. That's a fate Ssenyondo hopes won't fall on the children. He told ABC News he can't bear to tell them they aren't getting their medications. "If you tell one child that you know, we are no [longer] getting medication for your AIDS, so you're going to lose your life," Ssenyondo said. "That's something we cannot do. So we keep quiet." In another part of rural Uganda, Bayo Emmanuel, founder of the Bright Star Orphanage, shared a similar story. The eight HIV positive orphans he cared for got their medication for free prior to the cuts. After the cuts, Emmanuel said he was told he should turn to the private sector, where he would have to pay for their medication. He couldn't afford all of the children's medication and the orphanage ran out. One of the children, 14-year-old Migande Andrew, quickly fell ill. "He got weaker and weaker every day and lost his life in the process," Bayo told ABC News. The community he loved gathered to say their goodbyes, burying him on Feb. 21. Uganda has one of the highest rates of HIV in the world. Migande Andrew and Ms. Mary are just two of an estimated 53,000 HIV-related deaths worldwide resulting from US Aid cuts, according to Boston University's PEPFAR Impact Tracker. This tool tracks the impact of the President's Emergency Plan for Aids Relief, created by George W. Bush in 2003 and credited with saving 20 million lives around the globe. Today, the tool projects more than 9,000 children's lives could be lost globally by the end of 2025 if services aren't restored. Earlier this year, the Trump administration announced it was terminating 90% of its foreign aid contracts and cutting $60 billion in funding for international programs that support everything from famine relief to fighting infectious diseases like HIV and AIDS. The administration has denied any lives have been lost in connection to the recent cuts. On Feb. 4, Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed the cuts during a press conference. "We've issued waivers because we don't want to see anybody die or anybody be harmed in the short term," he said. "But we're going to conduct a review, and we are going to have foreign aid in this country that is going to further the national interests of the United States." In a tense May 21 exchange before members of the Senate Foreign Committee, Rubio said he was very proud of the work the administration has done so far with USAID, though he was questioned by several lawmakers as to the severity of the cuts. Despite the abrupt termination of resources from the U.S., people in Uganda are doing everything they can to keep their communities alive. To the west of Kampala, a clinic called The Family Hope Center is still running due to the strength and resilience of its workers. Since March, all staff have been working for free. The center has provided comprehensive HIV care and treatment services since 2005. It's been a lifeline for just under 4,000 patients, who are now unsure of how the center will be funded. "If we are not working, that means more people are going to get HIV, more people will drop out of care," Mubezi Peruth, a nurse at the center, told ABC News. "So we have to be here to encourage our clients to continue taking the medicine and to teach those that are negative to stay negative through the prevention information we give them." At the orphanage, Ssenyondo is unsure of what will happen next. "This is the time when the children need us more," he said. "This is the time when we have to act so much to encourage these children not to lose efforts to fight AIDS."
