Woolworths NZ sales rise despite grocery price decrease

Woolworths New Zealand's third quarter sales rose 4.8 percent to nearly $2.12 billion.
However, the grocer said there was a 0.3 percent drop in prices, led down by fruit and vegetables, such as potatoes, tomatoes and citrus, which offset increases in meat and dairy in the three months ended 6 April.
"We know Kiwi customers are still facing cost of living pressures, and delivering value continues to be our priority," Woolworths New Zealand interim managing director Pieter de Wet said.
"We've deliberately invested in keeping prices on key products as low as possible for as long as possible for our customers. The decline in average prices this quarter is also a good sign that food inflation is easing which is very welcome news.
"However, we are a small, exporting country that's buffeted by international dynamics, and while rising dairy and beef prices at the moment are great news for our farmers, it's no secret that this has a knock-on effect for kiwi households.
"As we head into the rest of the year, we'll continue to closely monitor our costs and remain focussed on meaningful value for our customers."
De Wet said a near 24 percent increase in eCommerce sales reflected the changing ways New Zealanders were choosing to shop for their food.
"More than ever, customers can shop around and compare prices and products online to choose the best option for their needs and budget.
"We're continuing to grow our eCommerce network so we can provide even more convenience with options like Direct to Boot now available in 52 of our stores."
Overall group sales, which included the Australian business rose 3.2 percent to A$17.3b.

'Not tolling the Manawatū Tararua Highway is a missed opportunity to help fund the ongoing maintenance and future resilience of this critical transport route through a 'user pays' approach,' says Chief Executive Nick Leggett. 'Tolling a new highway isn't about penalising the users of that road or the communities in the area. It's about being honest about the ongoing costs required to ensure the responsible management of the asset and ensuring that those who benefit from the road are making a direct contribution to its delivery and maintenance.' 'New Zealand's problem is that nobody thinks about maintaining a new road when it's nice and new, other than those who are responsible for building it. Those people don't control the money, though.' 'New infrastructure such as the Manawatū Tararua Highway comes with significant ongoing costs. Choosing not to use tolling doesn't make those costs disappear, it simply shifts the burden onto all New Zealand road users, including those who will never use the road,' Leggett says. 'If we want high-quality, modern infrastructure that is well maintained and resilient, we need to be smarter in how we manage and fund it. Having an annual amount of money generated from the road, means that New Zealanders can transparently follow that the money goes back into maintaining the road which generates it.' 'Tolling is one of the few tools we have that can directly link use with funding. It also helps protect the sustainability of the National Land Transport Fund so further investments can be made in critical transport projects into the future.' 'We need to be more inventive with how we fund and maintain infrastructure. Nothing should get off the ground without pricing road usage properly,' Leggett says. 'If New Zealand wants better infrastructure, it's going to need to do things differently at every stage of design, build and operations. That includes funding through tolls.'

Australian warship accidentally blocked radio, internet to parts of NZ

An Australian warship visiting Wellington accidentally caused internet and radio outages across parts of New Zealand earlier this week. The incident occurred when HMAS Canberra, one of Australia's largest warships, sailed along the country's coast Wednesday morning, en route to Wellington to visit the city. According to 9News, telecommunication companies had reported interruptions as early as 2am. An Australian Defence Force spokesperson told the Australian outlet that crew aboard the ship became aware the vessel's navigation radar was interfering with Wi-Fi in Taranaki and Marlborough. "On becoming aware, HMAS Canberra changed frequencies, rectifying the interference. There are no ongoing disruptions." ADVERTISEMENT Services had returned to normal by the time the ship docked in the capital on Thursday. An NZDF spokesperson told 1News: "The issue was reported to the New Zealand Defence Force. We contacted the Australian Defence Force and the issue was resolved." It had no further comment on the nature of the event. Matthew Harrison, founder and owner of Taranaki internet provider Primo, wrote on LinkedIn that the outage "wasn't just a blip". "It was full-scale, military-grade radar triggering built-in safety protocols designed to protect airspace… and it rolled across our network in sync with the ship's movement. "We've never seen anything like it here before," he wrote. "It's not every day a warship takes your gear offline." The vessel, an amphibious assault ship, can carry and launch numerous helicopters from its deck. ADVERTISEMENT It docked in Wellington with the Australian Capital Territory Chief Minister, Andrew Barr, onboard. Barr said the visit reaffirmed "deep and growing ties" between the two capitals. 'Our sister city relationship with Wellington is one of genuine friendship and mutual respect. It's built on a shared commitment to sustainability, creativity, and inclusive growth." Its delegation and crew participated in several community activities in Wellington, including assisting a soup kitchen and cleaning up selected coastal areas and tracks around the city. 'This week's celebration reflects the strength and significance of our city's relationship with Canberra, further deepening the bonds of friendship and collaboration between us,' Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau said about the visit. 'Our partnership is a source of great pride and a key element in Wellington's international engagements, fostering a continued exchange of ideas, culture, and goodwill.'
