28 safe after bus crashes into trailer on expressway
MARAN: Twenty-eight passengers including 13 Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) students escaped unhurt after the bus they were travelling in crashed into the rear of a trailer at Km161 of the East Coast Expressway near here today.
The 1am accident today involved a tour bus which was travelling from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan, Kuala Lumpur towards Terminal Sentral Kuantan(TSK).
The 38-year-old bus driver and the the 40-year-old Nissan lorry driver also did not sustain any injuries.
Maran police chief Superintendent Wong Kim Wai said both the bus and lorry were travelling in the same direction towards Kuantan.
"The bus ferrying 28 passengers from Kuala Lumpur to TSK was travelling on the slow lane when it crashed into the rear of the trailer.
"All the 28 passengers did not sustain any injuries. They were transferred to another bus to continue their journey to TSK," he said in a statement today.
Wong said the crash is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving, which carries a penalty of up to RM10,000 and a jail term of up to 12 months.
This crash involving university students comes after Monday's bus tragedy in Gerik, Perak, where 15 undergraduates were killed.

PKR's leave to appeal bid in Zuraida's bond payment case set for hearing on June 24

The terms of the bond, among others, required Zuraida to pay PKR RM10 million within seven days of winning an election on the PKR ticket, should she resign from the party, join another political party, or become an independent representative. In June 2023, the High Court ruled in favour of the party and ordered Zuraida to pay the RM10 million, with the court finding the bond to be valid and enforceable. However, in December last year, the Court of Appeal agreed with the High Court that there was a breach of bond but reduced the bond amount to RM100,000, citing that the RM10 million is not a reasonable amount of compensation. This prompted PKR to file a leave to appeal. In her defence, Zuraida contended that she was forced to sign the bond with the party to be able to stand for election as a candidate in the 14th General Election (GE14) in 2018. The Federal Court will now decide whether PKR can proceed with its appeal against the Court of Appeal's decision. In civil cases, litigants must obtain leave before they can proceed with their appeals in the Federal Court.
