Cowboys 'Fizzled-Out' Veteran Tipped To Have Make-Or-Break Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Dallas Cowboys' offseason has seen over 10 fresh faces walk through the doors of The Star, and one of them was running back Javonte Williams.

A four-year starter of the Denver Broncos, after a rookie season that saw him post 903 yards and four touchdowns in 2021, an ACL injury in 2022 set his trajectory back.
He would return in 2023 to rush for 774 yards and three touchdowns, but last season, despite leading Denver in rushing attempts (139) and yards (513), he was moved on.
The Broncos totaled 461 rushing attempts last season, ranking them 13th, and Williams (139) had to split carries with Jaleel McLaughlin (113 att, 496 yards, one touchdown) and Audric Estime (76 att, 310 yards, two touchdowns).
Now he's in Dallas, and NFL.com's Nick Shook thinks it's make-or-break time for Javonte.

"Williams fizzled out in Denver and ended up accepting a one-year, $3 million deal to headline Dallas' underwhelming backfield," Shook writes. "The sizzle he once brought to the Broncos faded before 2024, but he has a rare opportunity to regain it for a Cowboys team that should boast some offensive firepower, with CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens at receiver. If Williams is going to command a starting job anywhere in the NFL from here on out, it must begin in Dallas."

Williams and fellow veteran Miles Sanders are seen as the top two candidates for the starting role, with Sanders, according to our own Mike Fisher, standing out at OTAs.
So Javonte will have a battle on his hands to work his way past Sanders, but in truth, given how Schottenheimer wants his offense to work, a multiple-back rotation will likely take place.

As for Williams, he has shown that he can be the leading man, and he must prove that he's past his ACL injury and ready to shoulder the load once again.
The running back room is one of the most fascinating to watch in Oxnard, and who will eventually take their spot atop the depth chart is anyone's guess.

Cincinnati Bengals Accused Of Major Mistake In Signing Star Receiver

Cincinnati Bengals Accused Of Major Mistake In Signing Star Receiver originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cincinnati Bengals have one of the best wide receiver rooms in the entire NFL, but maintaining offensive weapons like that is not cheap. Advertisement In a recent article by Yardbarker's Seth Trachtman, he outlines one offseason move made by each team that he doesn't quite understand. For the Bengals, he thinks that move is re-signing their star WR2, Tee Higgins. 'While the Bengals should be commended for keeping their offensive core together, it could be at the expense of a very leaky defense,' Trachtman wrote. 'The team extended both Higgins and Ja'Marr Chase, while their defense was handicapped by significant spending. Higgins has played only 12 games in each of the last two seasons, and it remains to be seen if the team can remain competitive after paying two wideouts.' Higgins is one of the biggest physical threat receivers in the league, and puts opposing defenses on notice whenever the Bengals are in the red zone, but he is a pretty expensive player to retain. The 26-year-old wideout signed a four-year, $115 million extension back in March with the Bengals after some problems with contract negotiations the past few seasons. But as a result, the team has a lot less money to spend on their defense. Advertisement The most notable player that Cincinnati is most likely going to lose because of their lack of capital is star edge rusher Trey Hendrickson. As the days go by, it is becoming less and less likely that he will return to the Bengals, and some of that fact may be due to the team's unwillingness to spend money on their defense. There is almost no doubt that Higgins will play well following his contract extension, but it remains to be seen whether or not the team's defense will suffer as a result. Angels Announce Mike Trout News After Latest Setback

Angels Announce Mike Trout News After Latest Setback originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Baseball is better when Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout is healthy, mashing home runs, and manning the outfield. Advertisement We're getting closer to seeing Trout achieve all three once again. Trout, who moved from center to right field in spring training, did outfield drills before Friday's 5-4 victory over the rival Seattle Mariners. Trout hasn't played the outfield since suffering a knee injury on April 30. He missed nearly a month with a left knee bone bruise. 'He said he felt good,' Washington told reporters. 'It was just minimal motion. That's all. Just minimal motion. Nothing that really challenged him. But it's a start.' Los Angeles Angels right fielder Mike TroutTroy Taormina-Imagn Images Unfortunately for opposing pitchers, a healthy Trout seemingly found the Fountain of Youth during his IL stint. Trout is 10-of-25 in his last seven games with a home run and five RBI. Advertisement However, Trout is still only hitting .221 and is on pace for his lowest OPS since his 40-game cameo in 2011. He's at least matched last year's 10 home runs. As for the Angels, they're quietly lurking in the AL playoff hunt. Trout and teammates entered Saturday at 29-33, 5 1/2 games behind the first-place Houston Astros in the AL West. The Angels trail the Toronto Blue Jays for the American League's third and final Wild Card spot. MLB Insider Lists Yankees Interim Closer as Potential Trade Candidate

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. When the New York Yankees made a deal to acquire former Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams, many expected him to thrive with his new team. The duo of Williams and Luke Weaver in the backend of New York's bullpen had the potential to be one of the best in the game, but it has not quite gone that way. Williams has a 6.35 ERA and minus-0.6 WAR across 26 games and 22 2/3 innings pitched. His first season in a Yankees uniform has not gone how he envisioned it would and that may be why Mark Feinsand of listed Williams as a player that needs a change of scenery. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 03: Devin Williams #38 of the New York Yankees throws a pitch during the ninth inning of the game against the Cleveland Guardians at Yankee Stadium on June 03,... NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 03: Devin Williams #38 of the New York Yankees throws a pitch during the ninth inning of the game against the Cleveland Guardians at Yankee Stadium on June 03, 2025 in New York City. More"At first glance, trading the two-time All-Star reliever after acquiring him this winter seems like a crazy idea, but Williams has never seemed comfortable since joining the Yankees during the offseason," Feinsand wrote. "There was the facial hair issue during spring training, then a rocky start (10.00 ERA in his first 10 appearances) that cost him the closer's job before the end of April." Feinsand predicts that when New York's current closer Luke Weaver returns from the injured list, Williams' days in a Yankees uniform could be numbered. "He's been better during the past month (2.45 ERA in 12 appearances), but Williams will be a free agent after the season and seems unlikely to return to the Yankees in 2026," he wrote. "With Luke Weaver firmly entrenched as the closer (at least once he returns from the IL in a month or so), New York could look to move Williams later in July to get a return for him rather than watching him walk as a free agent." If New York decides to move off Williams when Weaver returns, teams such as the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals could use relief pitching help.
