J&K: Tourist Killed, Several Hurt in Attack on Pahalgam Health Resort

The Wire22-04-2025

Srinagar: At least one tourist was killed and several are injured, some critically, in an attack in south Kashmir's Pahalgam health resort where a group of suspected militants opened fire at tourists today (April 22).
At least two victims were brought to Anantnag district hospital in a critical state at around 4:30 pm today. Two more victims were taken to a nearby medical centre where their condition is reported to be stable.
Reports and officials said that gunshots were heard at around 2:50 pm on Tuesday in Baisaran meadow which is a rugged seven kilometres trail from Pahalgam bus stand and apparently very popular among day hikers and other adventure tourists.
'I was eating bhelpuri (a popular snack) with my husband when a man came and shot him. He (gunman) said he was perhaps a Muslim and that is why he shot him,' a young woman in tears can be seen narrating to a local news gatherer, according to a video which circulated on social media.

A middle-aged woman with blood-smeared face and an anguished teenager can also be seen in the video while the Kashmiri man doing the shooting can be heard assuring the victims that they had nothing to be afraid of and that he was going to stay with them.
'Please save my husband. For god's sake, save him,' another woman screams at him.
At some distance, a young man wearing a camouflaged shirt can be seen lying motionless on the ground in a bloodied state while a local horseman with a phone hooked to his ear passes by.

The camera then turns to the meadow where two to three persons can be seen also lying on the ground motionless at some distance from each other.
'Brother please help us. Please ask for help. His condition is bad,' another young woman says of her husband to the man shooting the video who in turn offers them water as the 49-second video comes to end.
Soon after the news reached the district headquarters, a team of civil and police officials from Anantnag rushed to the meadow in the upper reaches of Pahalgam which is not serviced by road.
The only way to reach the meadow is by hiking, on horseback or in a chopper. A group of hikers were visiting the area at the time of the firing, officials said.
A cordon and search operation also involving the army was launched in the area following the attack. Choppers were seen hovering over the area purportedly to trace the attackers, witnesses said.
Sources said that some of the victims have been critically injured in the attack. This has triggered a wave of anxiety and fears in the popular south Kashmir health resort as some believe it could deal a blow to the tourism sector.
While the Print is the first to report that one tourist has passed away, the identity of the deceased and the injured was not immediately known. According to a report, foreigners are among injured. There has been no official statement about the attack at the time when this report was filed.
According to one report, a woman, who is believed to be among the victims, rang up the police control room to report the attack, stating that her husband had been hit in the head and that six to seven more tourists were injured in the attack. The Wire couldn't immediately verify the report.
'My husband was shot in the head while seven others were also injured in the attack,' the unidentified woman told PTI over phone, pleading for help in evacuating the injured.
According to another PTI report, prime minister Narendra Modi had a telephonic conversation with the Union home minister Amit Shah on the attack. The PM asked Shah to take 'all suitable measures' and 'visit the site,' the agency reported, quoting government sources.
J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah, Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti, J&K Congress president Tariq Karra, Peoples Conference chief Sajad Lone, senior Bhartiya Janata Party leader Ravinder Raina and other political leaders also condemned the attack.

Clash between two groups in Kolkata outskirts leaves 5 cops injured

At least five policemen, including a woman cop, were injured and several vehicles set on fire as two groups clashed and indulged in stone-pelting on the outskirts of Kolkata on Wednesday afternoon. Police have arrested four persons and said they are carrying out raids to arrest more people responsible for the violence. According to police, the clash between the two groups began over a dispute involving a temporary shop in Rabindranagar area of Maheshtala in South 24 Parganas district, bordering Kolkata. Soon it spread to Nadiyal, which falls under Kolkata Police jurisdiction. 'Five police personnel have been injured, including one SDPO-ranked official, one Inspector, three sub-Inspectors, and one ASI. Four persons have been arrested,' DIG (Presidency Range) Akash Magharia told The Indian Express. A senior police officer said on Wednesday noon a youth from Nadiyal found that the place in Rabindranagar area, where he had not set up his shop for the past few days, had a Tulsi plant. 'His attempt to reclaim the area led to an initial scuffle between two groups. Soon, a large group of people was called in from Nadiyal, leading to a clash between two groups. Initially, police tried to calm down the situation, but it escalated with stone pelting in the area. Some shops were also vandalised,' the officer told The Indian Express. Around 3:30, the situation further flared up in Nadiyal, which falls under the Kolkata Police jurisdiction and is 500 metres from Rabindranagar police station under Diamond Harbour Police District in South 24 Parganas. 'A mob burnt motorbikes, police vehicles. Policemen got injured too. Though there were no serious injuries to anyone,' a senior police officer said. Police said they lobbed tear gas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob involved in stone pelting. 'The situation is normal in Rabindranagar area now. Four persons have been arrested, and raids are continuing. There will be many arrests subsequently,' ADG (Law and Order) Jawed Shamim said. Amid a large deployment of police personnel and Rapid Action Foce team, prohibitory orders have been put in place in the area. Meanwhile, the Opposition BJP demanded deployment of Central forces and accused the TMC government of 'Muslim appeasement'. Union Minister and West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar reacted strongly to the incident, blaming the state government for 'Muslim appeasement'. 'Despite knowing the culprits, the police acted against the victims instead of the aggressors,' Majumdar alleged, accusing the TMC government of 'ignoring repeated attacks on Bengali Hindus in Muslim-majority areas' of the state. Leader of Opposition in Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, who sat on a dharna outside Bhawani Bhavan, the state police headquarters, said: 'This is complete failure of the administration and police. Central paramilitary forces should be deployed at Maheshtala immediately… The Hindu community in Rabindranagar has been subjected to looting, arson, and violence for hours while the police watched silently. Several police vehicles were set on fire, yet there was no effective intervention.' He also claimed that DGP Rajiv Kumar refused to meet him. 'Despite such grave attacks on police, the top brass seems indifferent. I will move Calcutta High Court tomorrow seeking urgent intervention and central forces, as ordered earlier during communal tension in Murshidabad,' the BJP leader said. Both leaders also urged Governor CV Ananda Bose to intervene, alleging the incident reflected systemic administrative failure. 'The Governor must step in to ensure that constitutional order is upheld and justice is delivered to the affected Hindu community,' Majumdar said. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), however, rejected the allegations, saying the Opposition was attempting to politicise a 'local issue'. 'All necessary steps have been taken to control the situation. The police acted swiftly and with firmness. The BJP is trying to give a communal colour to what was essentially a dispute over setting up a shop,' said TMC spokesperson and state general secretary Kunal Ghosh. Condemning the violence, Kolkata Mayor and senior TMC minister leader Firhad Hakim said, 'We wish a speedy recovery to the injured police personnel. At the same time, we strongly condemn the BJP's attempt to communalise and politicise a sensitive issue.' He alleged that the BJP's tactics were aimed at 'disturbing the peace and harmony of Bengal' and urged all sides to act with restraint. Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express. Jihadi on trial in Sweden for murdering Jordan pilot refuses to speak

Osama Krayem, on trial for the murder of a Jordanian pilot burned alive in Syria by the Islamic State group, on Wednesday refused to answer questions from the prosecution. The brutal killing took place sometime in late 2014 or early 2015 and sparked outrage internationally and in Jordan, which was participating in the US-led coalition's strikes against IS positions in Syria. Krayem, a 32-year-old Swede already serving long prison sentences for his role in the Paris and Brussels attacks in 2015 and 2016, is on trial in Stockholm suspected of war crimes and terrorist crimes for his role in the pilot's killing. On December 24, 2014, an aircraft belonging to the Royal Jordanian Air Force crashed in Syria. The pilot, Maaz al-Kassasbeh, was captured the same day by IS fighters near the central city of Raqqa and was burned alive in a cage sometime before February 3, 2015, when a video of the gruesome killing was published, according to the prosecution. On Wednesday, prosecutor Henrik Olin asked Krayem, who was dressed in a dark blue shirt and appeared unfazed, if he intended to answer any questions. "Can you say something about your current situation? Are you a practising Muslim? Can you say something about your view of the Islamic State?" the prosecutor asked. "Does the fact that you are no longer answering questions have anything to do with you feeling that you were mistreated during the Swedish investigation?" Olin added. Avoiding the prosecutor's gaze, the defendant remained silent. Segments from interrogations with Krayem conducted during the investigation were read out and played during the trial. When questioned by police, Krayem insisted he had spent only 15 to 20 minutes on-site, unaware of what was going to happen, according to the preliminary investigation. "I was terrified, it was the first time I had seen someone burn," he said at the time. Earlier on Wednesday, Jawdat al-Kassasbeh, the brother of the pilot and a plaintiff in the case, told the court of the physical and psychological trauma the family has suffered since the killing. He said he learned of his brother's capture through a relative who worked at Jordan's foreign ministry and immediately went to the air force headquarters. "There, I see that the head of the air force and the operations teams are having a meeting on the subject... There were large screens showing images of Syria," he testified. "He told me: 'I think he's in this house,'" he said. "Psychologically, I was not doing well at that moment. So I told the head of the air force that ... I thought would kill him in a horrible way. I asked if it would be possible to bomb the house so he could be spared an atrocious death," he added. The Swedish investigation describes the al-Kassasbeh family as having close ties to Jordan's royal family and military. Jawdat al-Kassasbeh said he later learned of his brother's death on television. "It was a shock. I watched the whole video but in bits. I couldn't watch the entire video until 2021," he said. When his mother learned of the execution, "she had to be hospitalised immediately". His eldest sister "developed diabetes", while their father "contracted chronic illnesses, hypertension and is in poor psychological condition, he cries regularly", al-Kassasbeh said. nzg/ef/jll/giv

‘State can't object if families agree': SC grants bail to man arrested after inter-faith marriage

The Supreme Court has granted bail to a Muslim man who was arrested by the Uttarakhand Police in December under the state's anti-conversion law after he married a Hindu woman. 'State cannot have any objection to the appellant and his wife residing together inasmuch as they have been married as per the wishes to their respective parents and families,' said a bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and SC Sharma in a judgement delivered on May 19. The bench was hearing a petition by a man named Aman Siddiqui, who was arrested under the 2018 Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion Act and sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for allegedly concealing his religious identity and marrying a Hindu woman under Hindu religious customs, the Hindustan Times reported. Siddiqui was in jail for nearly six months. Siddiqui was booked on December 12, two days after his wedding, on a complaint filed by his wife's cousin, who claimed the family discovered the groom's religious identity only after visiting his home in Delhi. In February, Siddiqui's bail application was rejected by the Uttarakhand High Court, which accepted the prosecution's claim that the man and his family had intentionally concealed their religious identity. It took note as evidence an affidavit submitted by Siddiqui the day after the marriage, wherein he pledged not to force his wife to convert and to respect her religious freedom. The High Court had also stated that the marriage was not conducted under the Special Marriage Act, which is typically followed in interfaith unions. Siddiqui then approached the Supreme Court.
