10 Minutes of Violence Gave The Moon Its Very Own 'Grand Canyons'
Arizona's magnificent Grand Canyon is painstaking result of the Colorado River's current wearing away the planet's surface over millions of years.
Earth, however, isn't the only body in the Solar System with canyons and gorges. The Moon has structures comparable to Earth's Grand Canyon; although, in the absence of liquid water, their formation mechanism has been difficult to determine.
Now, scientists believe that they have figured it out. Two huge canyons scored into the surface of the Moon were created in the wake of a giant impact – and, in stark and jaw-dropping contrast to the Grand Canyon, their creation could have taken less than 10 minutes.
The two canyons in question, known as Vallis Schrödinger and Vallis Planck, can be found radiating away from an impact basin known as the Schrödinger crater on the lunar far side, near the south pole.
These things are huge – measuring 270 kilometers (168 miles) long and 2.7 kilometers deep, and 280 kilometers long and 3.5 kilometers deep, respectively. The Grand Canyon on Earth is longer, at 446 kilometers, but shallower, at 1.86 kilometers.
Such gouges, known as ejecta rays, can form when huge chunks of material are thrown by an impact event. But a team led by planetary scientist David Kring of the US Lunar and Planetary Institute wanted to really narrow down the formation process of these enormous canyons.
Kring and his colleagues combined photos of the Moon's surface to generate maps of the direction and distribution of the sprayed ejecta resulting from the Schrödinger impact. They then used this information to reverse engineer the impact itself, reconstructing the ejecta spray.
The team found that the impact was asymmetrical, with most of the ejecta distributed away from the lunar south pole. And it was intense. The material that created Vallis Schrödinger and Vallis Planck was traveling between 0.95 and 1.28 kilometers per second.
The impact energy required to produce this fallout, the researchers say, is around 130 times the energy contained in the entire global inventory of nuclear weapons.
The upcoming Artemis III lunar mission will be visiting the lunar far side, near the south pole, although the exact landing site has yet to be determined. The astronauts will not be in significant danger from huge impacts; the Schrödinger impact is estimated to have occurred 3.8 billion years ago, when there were a lot more large rocks flying around.
Rather, the results have implications for lunar exploration. The team's models suggest that the impact ejecta was mostly sprayed away from the proposed Artemis landing sites, which means that the explorers may have better access to the older, underlying minerals they want to study.
The launch is currently scheduled for 2027. When the mission arrives, what the Artemis crew finds will undoubtedly reveal more about how and when this huge impact unfolded.

A new coronavirus discovered in China is only a small step from mutating and causing another global pandemic, experts have warned. Scientists believe the variant, called HKU5-CoV-2, may infect a broader range of animals than Covid-19 – which caused millions of deaths – and may have more potential for jumping between species. US researchers fear that HKU5-CoV-2, found in China, in February, could also infect humans, leading to a widespread outbreak. The new study, published in Nature Communications, looked at a lesser-known group of coronaviruses called merbecoviruses, which includes HKU5 and MERS-CoV, which is responsible for the deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. The team from Washington State University looked at how the new pathogen interacts with human cells. They found that a small change in the virus's spike protein could allow it to attach to human ACE2 cells in people's throats, mouths and noses. HKU5-CoV-2 can infect and replicate inside human cells in both the airways and gut. According to the World Health Organisation, about 35 per cent of people infected with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome die. Since 2012, some 27 countries have reported cases, leading to 858 known deaths due to the infection, which spread from camels. But when HKU5 was discovered in February, scientists warned against exaggerating the risks because it does not enter human cells as readily as Sars-CoV-2, which caused Covid-19. HKU5 was first detected in bats by scientists from the Chinese laboratory where some say Covid originated in 2019. Prof Michael Letko, a virologist who co-led the study, said: 'HKU5 viruses in particular really hadn't been looked at much, but our study shows how these viruses infect cells. 'What we also found is HKU5 viruses may be only a small step away from being able to spill over into humans.' When Covid-19 emerged it was widely blamed on markets in China where different breeds of wild animal are kept caged and often slaughtered close to other animals. Meat is sold at the open-air stalls. Critics said the markets were the perfect breeding ground for new zoonotic diseases – those that spread to humans – to emerge. The scientists, whose experiments studied how the new pathogen interacts with human cells, believe the virus would have to carry certain mutations if it were to infect humans. 'These viruses are closely related to MERS, so we have to be concerned if they ever infect humans,' Prof Letko said. 'While there's no evidence they've crossed into people yet, the potential is there and that makes them worth watching.'

Amid an escalating feud between billionaire Elon Musk and President Donald Trump, Musk threatened to decommission the Dragon spacecraft. Dragon is a family of spacecraft that is produced by Musk's technology company SpaceX. Various Dragon spacecraft have been making trips to the International Space Station (ISS) since 2012, carrying both cargo and crew to the floating station. SpaceX is a key partner in NASA's Artemis program, which seeks to establish a permanent base on the moon and eventually send humans on missions to Mars. Space science experts told ABC News that SpaceX has been essential to NASA's missions and the breakdown of a relationship would leave a hole that would be hard to fill. "Basically, the United States has uniquely put all of its eggs into the Elon Musk basket in terms of a sovereign, uniquely American vehicle to get people into and out of space," Moriba Jah, a professor of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics at the University of Texas at Austin, told ABC News."Now that relationship's severed; it leaves the United States completely vulnerable." NASA and SpaceX's relationship began in 2008 when the federal space agency launched the Commercial Resupply Services program to deliver of cargo and supplies to the ISS on commercially operated spacecraft. The agency signed a contract with SpaceX, and awarded the company 12 flights valued at about $1.6 billion. Mark Jernigan, executive director of the Rice Space Institute in Houston and former associate director for Space Life Sciences Spacecraft Systems Development Support at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, said he was involved in the launching of NASA's commercial cargo program. "The idea was to offload NASA responsibility by actually changing the paradigm of how NASA did business, and commercial cargo was kind of one of the groundbreaking versions," he told ABC News. "The nature of that was to specify what kind of cargo you wanted to launch, and how much you wanted … and the requirements that the rocket has to meet in order to safely dock with the station." Dragon 1 provided cargo service to the ISS for 10 years, between 2012 and 2020, before it was retired. SpaceX launched Dragon 2 with two versions: one as a replacement for the Dragon 1 spacecraft and the second as a capsule that could take crew into space. In September 2014, NASA announced the selection of SpaceX and its Crew Dragon spacecraft as one of the companies to transport U.S. astronauts to the ISS. Michael Liemohn, a professor of climate and space sciences and engineering at the University of Michigan, said SpaceX has been essential to NASA's commercial cargo program. "[SpaceX has been] very important," he told ABC News. "When we retired the space shuttles, our only way [for] sending humans into low Earth orbit was to contract with Russia on a Soyuz capsule, and that's why NASA commissioned both Boeing and SpaceX to build new crew capsules so that there would be capability there." Jernigan -- the Rice Space Institute executive director -- noted that SpaceX has been more successful than other candidates including Boeing and its spacecraft Starliner. In June 2024, two NASA astronauts performed the first astronaut-crewed flight of Starliner capsule to the ISS. What was supposed to be a mission lasting about one week turned into a nine-month stay aboard the ISS due to several issues with Starliner and NASA's decision to add the two astronauts to the ISS crew. Eventually, in March 2025, SpaceX's Crew-10 successfully docked at the ISS, bringing four new astronauts to work on the floating lab and setting up the return to Earth of the two astronauts, as well as a third NASA astronaut and a Russian cosmonaut. "Right now, the only U.S. provider [for crew] is SpaceX, and so not having SpaceX would be a big deal," Jernigan said. "My speculation would be that if the SpaceX Dragon went away, it would be difficult to ramp up Boeing to replace SpaceX." He noted that such a change would be costly. "So if we had to do without SpaceX, we would really have to shift gears and infuse a lot of capital to try to get back our alternatives up to speed," he said. SpaceX is the lunar lander provider for the first flight and Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, is the second lunar lander provider. If Musk were to decommission the Dragon spacecraft and no longer have contracts with NASA, it would be hard for Blue Origin to get up to speed, according to Jah from the University of Texas at Austin "If Dragon goes away and then it's just Blue Origin, we would have to put more funding resources not just into trying to get Blue Origin to launch sooner, but also in being able to test all those technologies in ways that they haven't been tested yet," he said. "Like, so far, the SpaceX technologies have been very successful in getting people into and out of space. That has not happened yet with the Blue Origin technologies and, at most, they've only had sub-orbital flights."
