Private meeting brings defining image from Rome

RTÉ News26-04-2025

Given there were so many leaders gathered in the Vatican today, it's understandable that it was an opportunity for discussions.
As world leaders arrived in St Peter's Square, it was confirmed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had met with US President Donald Trump prior to the funeral.
A picture confirming this was then released while the ceremony was underway.
It is a powerful image of the two men in the vast basilica with two chairs pulled up, intensity in their faces.
A second picture, also captured before the funeral, shows French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Mr Trump and Mr Zelensky speaking.
Arguably, the pictures which were released during the funeral mass became the story of the day.
What would the "bridge-builder" Pope Francis have thought about it all?
Given his continuous calls for peace coupled with his humility, there's little doubt that he would have welcomed the engagement.
If it overshadowed the final celebration of his life in terms of news, it did not impact the crowd of 200,000 people who came to say farewell.
And it was the people that mattered most to Francis.
Rome and Vatican City are returning to normal following the funeral this morning.
Many world leaders have already left, some barriers have been removed and people have left the area of St Peter's.
Easter celebrations will continue until Pentecost Sunday, as is tradition within the Catholic Church.
So too will the speculation around the pope's successor, which is the next phase in the current process.

Irvine Welsh on his Trainspotting sequel: ‘It is that time of life when they are getting serious about romance. It is an interesting time in the lives of men'

He may now be in his mid-sixties, but writer Irvine Welsh is still an enfant terrible. In 2020, he tweeted of Donald Trump: 'Has that tedious fat sex pest f**ked off yet?' At Queen Elizabeth's Jubilee celebrations in June 2020, he told Keir Starmer to 'get f**ked, you ridiculous clown', when the Labour Party leader said it was the 'patriotic duty' of British people to 'revel' in her majesty's reign. And when Priti Patel, who was then UK home secretary, announced that Britain had extended pub opening hours to let them enjoy themselves over the Jubilee weekend, Welsh was suitably in a mood not to revel.

Declan Lynch: The BBC got us through endless Northern nights, Gerry Adams

Today at 21:30 The BBC is 'The British Broadcasting Corporation', but nobody calls it that except Gerry Adams. Again and again, very deliberately, as he savours his triumph in the recent libel action against 'The British Broadcasting Corporation', he gives it the full official title — almost as if the 'British' part has connotations of inherent badness. He claims that his purpose in taking the action was to 'put manners' on this British Broadcasting Corporation. There were even suggestions — later denied — that the BBC would consider blocking the transmission of its programmes in this country, rather than risk further exposure to our atrocious libel laws.
