Lionel Messi's sons look up to five players – and one plays in Premier League
Lionel Messi's three sons, Thiago, Mateo and Ciro, have a number of favourite players, including one Premier League star and four from La Liga - the league their father spent 17 years dominating
Lionel Messi has shared the top five footballers currently admired by his three sons, with only one of them playing in the Premier League. The youngsters are lucky enough to call one of the game's greatest ever players their dad.
However, Messi's children, Thiago, 12, Mateo, 9, and Ciro, 7, have their own favourite players in today's game. The Inter Miami star revealed who his boys look up to most during a recent interview with Simplemente Futbol.
Four of their favourites ply their trade in La Liga - where Messi spent the first 17 years of his professional career - including Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr, and Barcelona's dynamic duo Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal.
The lone English football representative is Erling Haaland, reflecting Messi's sons' preference for attacking players. After the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner left Europe for Miami in 2023, all three kids joined the club's academy.
While it seems unlikely that the 37-year-old will emulate LeBron James by having one of his sons as a team-mate, the forward hasn't ruled out extending his supreme career until 2026 - the year of the next World Cup.
Having triumphantly lifted the long-elusive trophy in 2022, conversations have swirled about whether the Argentinian skipper will hang up his international boots or guide his nation in a World Cup defence during the next tournament.
Messi played a pivotal role in securing his nation's spot for the competition, notching up six goals and providing three assists across nine qualifiers, contributing significantly to the title holder's path to the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
While Messi steered clear of confirming what could be an unprecedented sixth World Cup appearance next year, he acknowledged his hesitation in cementing his decision.
He confessed in the interview: "The truth is, if you stop and think about it, it feels far away. But at the same time, time flies. I'll see how I feel. Of course, I think about it, but I don't want to set goals either."

Stuart Pearce was left disappointed by one England star's 'slow and lethargic' display as the Three Lions underwhelmed with a 1-0 win over lowly-ranked Andorra. Thomas Tuchel became the first England manager to win his first three games in charge without conceding a single goal. 'He played slow and lethargically because he had a lot of time to do so. When you have a lot of time to do so, that's the last thing you need to do. You need to play it quickly, effectively and show energy. 'He's not an aggressive player, but every time there was a challenge and the ball fell between him and an Andorran player, he almost got out of the way apologetically and let the Andorran take the ball of him and the rest of the team had to get it back for him.' Pearce continued: 'I think we're all disappointed with Cole today because we know he has the ability. 'But he's one of those over the next twelve months that has to prove his ability in an England shirt as well as in a Chelsea shirt, so we know we can trust you and you can be that matchwinner that is going to help us win the tournament.' Palmer was far from the only England player who failed to make an impact on the game, with Tuchel critical of his entire side for their lack of intensity during large swathes of the contest. 'I was most worried in the last 20 minutes because I did not like the attitude that we ended the game with,' said the German. Franck Ribery hits back at Cristiano Ronaldo in escalating Ballon d'Or row
Franck Ribery has previously expressed his displeasure at missing out on the Ballon d'Or in 2013 to five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo and has once again hit out at the Portuguese forward Franck Ribery has mocked Cristiano Ronaldo 's claim about the Ballon d'Or after he revealed his three favourites. The latest iteration of the award is set to be handed out in a glitzy ceremony in Paris in September. Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele is among the favourites after helping the French side to the Champions League for the first time. Lamine Yamal and Mohamed Salah have also been mentioned as contenders for the award. Meanwhile, five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo has offered his take on this year's frontrunners and claimed that Dembele could be the favourite after his European success. He said: 'The individual awards have lost some consensus, I can't say anything about who should win. 'In my opinion, those who stand out and win the Champions League should win. But there is no consensus. 'I don't believe much in individual awards because I know what goes on behind the scenes. Lamine [Yamal] could win, like [Ousmane] Dembele or Vitinha, other emerging players… but individual awards are irrelevant.' Ribery has since replied with a scathing comment on social media.
