Ukraine invited to Nato summit in The Hague this month

Ukraine has received an invitation to the coming Nato summit in The Hague, Netherlands, President Volodymyr Zelensky told journalists on Monday. 'We have been invited to the Nato summit. I think that is important,' Zelensky said. The invitation was extended during his meeting with Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte in Vilnius, Lithuania. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has been tasked with preparing the meeting. Zelensky did not say whether he would travel to the Netherlands himself. The summit of the member states of the Nato military alliance is expected to take place in The Hague in just under three weeks. Ukraine has been fighting a Russian invasion with Western support for more than three years. Moscow has demanded a ban on Kyiv joining Nato. Preventing Kyiv from joining Nato, which is enshrined in the country's constitution, is one of the Kremlin's main reasons for having launched the assault on its neighbour.

Italy's Mount Etna spews huge plume of ash, gas

A huge plume of ash, gas and rock spewed forth on Monday from Italy's Mount Etna, Europe's largest active volcano, but authorities said there was no current danger to the population. Advertisement Images showed a massive grey cloud billowing forth from the volcano on the island of Sicily, beginning about 11.24am local time (09:24 GMT), according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). Surveillance cameras showed 'a pyroclastic flow probably produced by a collapse of material from the northern flank of the Southeast Crater', the agency said. A pyroclastic flow occurs when volcanic rock, ash and hot gases surge from volcanoes. They are extremely dangerous. The explosive activity 'had transitioned to a lava fountain', INGV said, with the plume of ash expected to dissipate towards the southwest. Advertisement The president of the region of Sicily, Renato Schifani, said experts had assured him there was 'no danger for the population', with the flow not having passed the Valley of the Lions, an area frequented by tourists.

Ukraine ready for ‘necessary steps for peace' at Turkey talks with Russia

Ukraine said on Monday it was ready to take 'necessary steps for peace' at talks with Russia in Istanbul, where the two sides will exchange plans on how they want to end the three-year war, Europe's largest conflict since World War II. Advertisement Urged on by US President Donald Trump, Moscow and Kyiv have opened direct negotiations for the first time since the early weeks of Russia's invasion, but have yet to make significant progress towards an elusive agreement. Monday's talks come a day after Ukraine carried out one of its most brazen and successful attacks ever on Russian soil, hitting dozens of strategic bombers parked at airbases thousands of kilometres behind the front line. A first round of talks in Istanbul last month yielded a large-scale prisoner exchange but no pause in the fighting, which has raged since Russia invaded in February 2022. The second round was scheduled to get underway at 1pm (1000 GMT) at the Ciragan Palace in Istanbul, an Ottoman imperial house on the banks of the Bosphorus that is now a luxury five-star hotel.
