Quirky vegetable sculpture contest features squash Trump, papal 'Cornclave'
London, Jun 7 (AP) Vegetable likenesses of US President Donald Trump and singer Dolly Parton and a papal 'Cornclave" went on display Saturday at the Lambeth Country Show, an urban take on a country fair held annually in London's Brockwell Park.
The two-day show features sheep-shearing, livestock competitions, food, music and a vegetable sculpture contest that has attracted national renown for its quirky creativity.
This year, several sculptures referenced the recent papal election or movie on the same subject, including one featuring cardinals made of maize, titled 'Cornclave." Other entries included Irish rap trio Kneecap in potato form, 'Cauli Parton" in a movie-inspired tableau titled '9 to Chive," a vegetable 'Mo Salad" likeness of Liverpool soccer star Mohamed Salah and animated icons Wallace and Gromit made from butternut squash.
Trump also got the butternut squash treatment, while some entries referred to local politics. In Lambeth, as in other parts of London, local authorities have turned to holding large concerts and festivals in parks as a way to raise money, to the chagrin of some neighbours.
'Wolf Hall" actor Mark Rylance, one of a group of local residents opposed to big events in Brockwell Park, is represented as 'Mark Rylunch," with an apple-carved head and satirical signs branding him a NIMBY (not in my backyard) campaigner.
'Every year, this is what we get so excited about, is the vegetable sculptures," Country Fair regular Maddy Luxon said. 'It's just so unique and just so witty and we love the political ones." 'And the puns," said Marek Szandrowski, who was with her. 'The vegetable puns, definitely." (AP) GRS GRS

Has Ivanka Trump distanced herself from MAGA? Her recent action 'subtly shading' father Donald Trump sparks buzz
Ivanka Trump recently shared a photograph on social media platform Instagram promoting a book written by a vocal critic of her father, President Donald Trump , sparking buzz online. She appeared to distance herself even further from the MAGA movement after promoting a book written by an author who actively campaigned against her father during the 2024 election cycle. The President's eldest daughter posted a shot of 'Untamed' Glennon Doyle's 2020 memoir , amongst a collection of photographs documenting the highlights of her week, according to The Independent. The post appeared on Ivanka's Instagram story. Ivanka Trump supports father's critics Ivanka Trump has chosen to openly support one of her father President Donald Trump's model-turned-business-woman has stepped away from the limelight, solely sharing glimpses into her glam life that includes lavish rehearsal dinners and Miami boat rides. Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Make the move from OpenAI to Open Source Intel® Xeon® Learn More Undo This week, she shared an array of photos showing her 'week in Miami,' which includes working out, eating gourmet meals, spending time with her family and friends and lastly, but most intriguingly, reading Glennon Doyle 's book Untamed. The novel's synopsis says, 'It is the story of navigating divorce, forming a new blended family, and discovering that the brokenness or wholeness of a family depends not on its structure but on each member's ability to bring her full self to the table.' Live Events The book topped the New York Times bestseller list, but that wasn't what truly captured her fans' attention. The author has been an outspoken critic of the President and even publicly endorsed Kamala Harris during his presidential campaign last fall. When the former Vice President replaced Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee last summer, she expressed support for Harris—while also taking a subtle jab at the sitting President. 'Winning this election to save America' On Instagram, she said, 'Winning this election to save America from fascism will be hard. WE CAN DO HARD THINGS. AND WE WILL. No more fear. We gotta BELIEVE and we gotta WORK. CHINS UP SHOULDERS BACK: Let's effing go." "Listen at link to our incredible conversation with the future POTUS @KamalaHarris about her vision for America, Roe v. Wade, and HOW WE MUST RECLAIM PATRIOTISM.' Untamed is Doyle's memoir, described on Amazon as a story about how she "learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to fully live. It is the story of navigating divorce, forming a new blended family, and discovering that the brokenness or wholeness of a family depends not on its structure but on each member's ability to bring her full self to the table." A few weeks before the results of the election was announced, she also said, 'If Trump wins, we lose, out daughters will have fewer rights than our mothers.' Her dislike for the President extends for the past decade, even when he was running for President for the first time in 2016. A month before that election, she took to Facebook with another strong message, stating, 'I am an American woman and I am appalled and furious that people I know and respect might vote into the presidency a man who brags about sexual assault. Go ahead, list the excuses for this. There are none.' 'There's a hell of a lot of misogyny surfacing right now and silence about it is a CHOICE,' she continued. 'If you are a woman or love a woman Speak Up Now before it's too late.'

A good look at Good Night, and Good Luck; George Clooney's timely revival of truth on trial
AP FILE - George Clooney appears at the "Good Night, and Good Luck" Broadway opening night on April 3, 2025, in New York. (Photo by Andy Kropa/Invision/AP, File) Amid mounting unrest over sweeping ICE raids in Los Angeles, with protests erupting in Westlake, Paramount, and downtown, some met with flashbangs, tear gas, and the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops, CNN offered a cultural counterpoint. On Saturday, June 7, the network aired Good Night, and Good Luck live from Broadway, making television history as the first full Broadway production to be broadcast in real time on a major network. Staged at New York's Winter Garden Theatre, the event featured George Clooney in a lead role and was introduced by CNN anchor Pamela Brown. It was followed by post-show analysis from Anderson Cooper. Part political theatre, part media spectacle, the broadcast turned a historic play about journalistic integrity into a timely reflection of current events, unfolding against a backdrop of political tension and public protest. CNN's decision to televise the production aligns with its recent attempts to reframe prime-time programming, and many observers hailed the event as both a creative gamble and a bold political statement. The play, co-written and headlined by Clooney, revisits legendary CBS newsman Edward R. Murrow's takedown of Senator Joseph McCarthy during the 1950s Red Scare. Premiering amid heightened debate around press freedom, media integrity, and authoritarian political trends in the U.S., the production clearly resonates with today's headlines. Though subdued compared to David Strathairn's Oscar-nominated film portrayal, Clooney's performance conveyed Murrow's quiet steel. The actor-director also helped shape the narrative to reflect today's fractured media landscape, integrating archival imagery, authentic cable graphics, and modern references, including Elon Musk and surveillance politics. Critics noted how this juxtaposition lent fresh urgency to a familiar historical tale. From a technical standpoint, the production took daring creative liberties. It used screens to project close-ups of Clooney and other actors as they delivered lines, emulating a newsroom in tone and format. Critics from the Los Angeles Times praised this innovation, calling the broadcast 'one of the most stirring offerings of the Broadway season', a rare crossover that made theater more accessible while still carrying artistic some pointed out the irony: high ticket prices and a near-Hollywood cast drew criticism when the show first opened on Broadway, with some theatergoers claiming it priced out traditional audiences. Saturday's CNN airing, free to the public, helped counter that criticism and widened iconic performance sparked a wide range of reactions online. While many lauded the play's political relevance and Clooney's daring as a producer, others found the staging occasionally static and the symbolism heavy-handed. One Reddit user commented, 'Seeing Broadway on CNN was surreal, but watching Murrow fight McCarthyism in 2025 felt more relevant than ever.'Despite critiques, the project was a commercial hit. The production recently broke box office records by earning more than $4 million in a single week, boosted by five Tony nominations, including Best Leading Actor for Clooney. Above all, Clooney's Good Night and Good Luck succeeded in its larger mission: reasserting journalism's role in safeguarding democracy. As Murrow famously warned in the play and the original film, 'This instrument can teach, it can illuminate... but it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends.'

Trump attends UFC fight in New Jersey, takes break from politics, Musk feud
President Donald Trump walked out to a thunderous standing ovation just ahead of the start of the UFC pay-per-view card at the Prudential Centre on Saturday night, putting his public feud with tech billionaire Elon Musk on hold to instead watch the fierce battles inside the cage. Trump was accompanied by UFC President Dana White and the pair headed to their cageside seats to Kid Rock's American Bad Ass. Trump and White did the same for UFC's card last November at Madison Square Garden, only then they were joined by Musk. Trump shook hands with fans and supporters a heavyweight lineup that included retired boxing champion Mike Tyson on his way to the cage. Trump was joined by his daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, along with son Eric Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Trump shook hands with the UFC broadcast team that included Joe Rogan. Rogan hosted Trump on his podcast for hours in the final stages of the campaign last year. UFC fans went wild for Trump and held mobile devices in their outstretched arms to snap pictures of him. Trump arrived in time for the start of a card set to include two championship fights. Julianna Pea and Merab Dvalishvili were scheduled to each defend their 135-pound championships. UFC fighter Kevin Holland won the first fight with Trump in the building, scaled the cage and briefly chatted with the President before his post-fight interview.
