Matic, 36, used tape to cover a rainbow coloured Ligue 1 logo on his Lyon shirt for their final day victory over Angers.
The logo was part of Ligue 1's annual campaign against homophobia which sees every club shirt adorned with the rainbow design.
Matic wasn't the only player to cover the logo, with Le Havre forward Ahmed Hassan also covering the sleeve design with tape.
According to Belgian news outlet HLN, both Matic and Hassan have been handed two-match bans by the French Football Federation as a result of their actions.
The pair will also reportedly have to undergo an awareness campaign about homophobia in football.
Matic is believed to be a member of the Serbian Orthodox Church and Hassan is Muslim.
A third player, Nantes striker Mostafa Mohamed, has escaped punishment after refusing to play with the logo.
Mohamed, who is also a practicing Muslim, chose not to play in the final match of the season rather than covering the logo up.

Mohamed cited his 'values' for not playing in Nantes 3-0 win over Montpellier.
He wrote on social media: "Living together also means recognising that this diversity can be expressed differently from one person to another.
Nemanja Matic brands Andre Onana 'one of worst keepers in Man Utd HISTORY' in savage response to goalie
"I believe in mutual respect - the respect we owe others, but also the respect we owe ourselves and our beliefs.
"As for me, there are deep-rooted values tied to my heritage and my faith, which make participating in this initiative difficult."
The actions of the Matic, Hassan and Mohamed prompted France's sports minister Marie Basacq to issue a statement after the final day of the Ligue 1 campaign.
Barsacq said: "Football has a massive platform, and the [French Football] Federation is determined to put this issue on the clubs' and supporters' agenda.
'Homophobic insults and behaviour are no longer acceptable.
"Society has evolved, and the language in football must change with it. There's a full range of sanctions available, and they must be applied.'
Although rare, some players have spoken out in support of the LGBTQ+ community in the past.
Speaking six years ago, Atletico Madrid and French international Antoine Griezmann said: "If a gay player wants to come out, he might not have all the France players with him, but he will have me.'

Stuart Pearce slams 'slow and lethargic' England star after Andorra win
Stuart Pearce was left disappointed by one England star's 'slow and lethargic' display as the Three Lions underwhelmed with a 1-0 win over lowly-ranked Andorra. Thomas Tuchel became the first England manager to win his first three games in charge without conceding a single goal. But the manner of Saturday's win left much to be desired, with England jeered off the pitch in Barcelona after a lacklustre attacking display. Noni Madueke was the sole bright spark in an England shirt, and set up the game's only goal with a low cross for Harry Kane to tap home. But several England players failed to impress to leave Tuchel with plenty of food for thought just twelve months out from the 2026 World Cup. And Pearce, in particular, was left frustrated by the performance of Cole Palmer, who was afforded the No10 role by Tuchel but failed to influence the game before his withdrawl shortly after the hour mark. 'I dont think he got the game, Pearce told talkSPORT. 'I don't think he understood exactly what was needed from him as a player. 'He played slow and lethargically because he had a lot of time to do so. When you have a lot of time to do so, that's the last thing you need to do. You need to play it quickly, effectively and show energy. 'He's not an aggressive player, but every time there was a challenge and the ball fell between him and an Andorran player, he almost got out of the way apologetically and let the Andorran take the ball of him and the rest of the team had to get it back for him.' Pearce continued: 'I think we're all disappointed with Cole today because we know he has the ability. 'But he's one of those over the next twelve months that has to prove his ability in an England shirt as well as in a Chelsea shirt, so we know we can trust you and you can be that matchwinner that is going to help us win the tournament.' Palmer was far from the only England player who failed to make an impact on the game, with Tuchel critical of his entire side for their lack of intensity during large swathes of the contest. 'I was most worried in the last 20 minutes because I did not like the attitude that we ended the game with,' said the German. More Trending 'I didn't like the lack of urgency and it did not match the occasion – it is still a World Cup qualifier. We will let them know [on Sunday] what we want from them. 'I think we lacked the seriousness and the urgency that is needed in a World Cup qualifier. 'I think we played with fire. I didn't like the attitude in the end. I didn't like the body language. It was not what the occasion needed.' England are back in action on Tuesday at the City Ground, where they face Senegal in a friendly. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Franck Ribery hits back at Cristiano Ronaldo in escalating Ballon d'Or row
Franck Ribery has previously expressed his displeasure at missing out on the Ballon d'Or in 2013 to five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo and has once again hit out at the Portuguese forward Franck Ribery has mocked Cristiano Ronaldo 's claim about the Ballon d'Or after he revealed his three favourites. The latest iteration of the award is set to be handed out in a glitzy ceremony in Paris in September. Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele is among the favourites after helping the French side to the Champions League for the first time. Lamine Yamal and Mohamed Salah have also been mentioned as contenders for the award. Meanwhile, five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo has offered his take on this year's frontrunners and claimed that Dembele could be the favourite after his European success. He said: 'The individual awards have lost some consensus, I can't say anything about who should win. 'In my opinion, those who stand out and win the Champions League should win. But there is no consensus. 'I don't believe much in individual awards because I know what goes on behind the scenes. Lamine [Yamal] could win, like [Ousmane] Dembele or Vitinha, other emerging players… but individual awards are irrelevant.' Ribery has since replied with a scathing comment on social media. 'So you NEED to win the Champions League to win the Ballon d'Or?,' Ribery asked on Twitter alongside three laughing emojis. It is not the first time that Ribery has expressed his annoyance at missing out on the Ballon d'Or. The Frenchman was among the front-runners for the award back in 2013 after helping Bayern Munich to the Champions League crown. But he ended up finishing third behind Messi and Ronaldo - the latter claiming the crown with 27.99% of the votes. And that is a call that still wrangles with Ribery to his day. Who should win this year's Ballon d'Or? Share your thoughts in the comments below 'It was unfair," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport earlier this year. "It was an incredible season for me, and I should have won it. They extended the time for votes, and something strange happened. I felt that it was a political choice." Ronaldo has since added a further three Ballon d'Ors to his collection, his last coming in 2017 when he was still with Real Madrid. His former teammates Luka Modric and Karim Benzema have won the award since, with Messi also scooping a further two. Manchester City midfielder Rodri is the current holder after becoming the first Premier League player since Ronaldo in 2008 to win the award.
