Air India plane crash: DNA match confirmed for 190 victims, 157 bodies handed over to families
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 18 (ANI): DNA samples of 190 victims of the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad have matched with their family members, and the bodies of 157 victims have been handed over, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Superintendent Rakesh Joshi confirmed on Wednesday.
Joshi said that of the 190 matched DNA samples, 123 are of Indian nationals and 27 are from the United Kingdom. He added that the DNA of a Canadian citizen has also been matched.
Addressing a media briefing, Joshi said, '... Till 1045 hours today, 190 DNA samples have matched. Mortal remains of 157 deceased have been handed over to their families... Of the 190 DNA samples that have matched, 123 are Indians, 7 are Portuguese, 27 are from the UK, four are non-passengers, and one person is from Canada.'
He confirmed that the lone survivor in the London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which crashed into a hostel complex of BJ Medical College in the Meghani Nagar area of Gujarat's Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, has been discharged and sent back home with his family.
'Lone survivor Vishwas has been discharged and sent back home with his family,' he added.
Earlier in the day, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Wednesday announced that 184 DNA samples have been matched so far after the tragic London-bound Air India plane crash.
In a post on the social media platform X, Sanghavi wrote, 'Air India crash update: As of 8 am, 184 DNA samples have been matched.'
DNA testing is being conducted by forensic teams from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU).
The crash occurred on June 12, when a London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a hostel complex of BJ Medical College in the Meghani Nagar area of Gujarat's Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The tragedy claimed 241 lives out of 242 onboard, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. (ANI)

British Columbia Premier David Eby has mulled to ask Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to officially declare the Lawrence Bishnoi gang a 'terrorist organisation" in the country, adding that it had been linked to many crimes. Days after the Indian community members held a public safety forum against extortion, Eby said he would write to Carney to formally designate the gang as a terrorist organisation amid a surge in violent extortion cases linked to the group across multiple Canadian provinces. On Tuesday, the premier said he will write to about it 'to enable police to be able to use the necessary tools to investigate." 'This is a serious step," Eby said. 'We don't make this recommendation lightly, but this activity strikes at public confidence in the justice system, in our democracy." He alleged that the gang had been linked to extortion and other crimes against South Asian community members in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. Citing a pattern of transnational organised crime, he said that existing law enforcement powers may fall short, and a terrorist designation would allow police to use enhanced legal tools. 'They need additional tools to respond to the fact that this is transnational organised crime," he said. 'This is more in the nature of terrorism than it is traditional crime. The community is terrified, and action needs to be taken." As Eby stressed his demand, Balpreet Singh from World Sikh Organisation said he supported his request. Eby pointed out that the federal government had previously added Mexican drug cartels to Canada's list of terrorist entities, an approach he believed is now warranted in this case. Canada's police had earlier reported that South Asian community members are being extorted under threat of violence or death. Adding that Lawrence Bishnoi gang has been linked to some of those threats. One victim, Satish Kumar who was the president of the Lakshmi Narayan Mandir Temple and owner of Reflections Banquet Halls, told the Vancouver Sun that he received a threat after refusing to pay $2 million to an extortionist. Abbotsford police had earlier confirmed that some extortion cases targeting wealthy South Asians in the region were linked to the Bishnoi network. National Investigation Agency (NIA) has described Lawrence Bishnoi as running a 'terror syndicate" from Indian jails, with operations extending to Canada through local associates. The Bishnoi gang has been under increased scrutiny since the killing of singer Sidhu Moosewala in 2022, which was allegedly orchestrated by its members. Meanwhile, Elenore Sturko, B C Opposition public safety critic, opposed Eby's demand, saying that other issues need addressing. Sturko asserted that she is unaware that police 'definitively" linked Bishnoi gang to extortion cases, further questioning the timing of Eby's comment. 'The police haven't come out and told my community that this gang is responsible for these incidents," she said. 'This is a very dramatic and headline-grabbing thing that the premier's done today, but I hope it doesn't distract from the fact that there are other issues at play here that need addressing," she added. Air India Plane Crash: 202 Victims Identified, 124 Bodies Handed Over To Families
In a major update on the Ahmedabad plane crash that killed 241 of the 242 onboard, DNA matches have been confirmed for 202 victims, with 157 bodies handed over to families so far. The remaining 33 cases are at various stages of the identification and handover process. DNA matching is still underway for 5 victims, while 15 bodies are awaiting additional samples from family members. Another 10 bodies are currently being processed for release, according to sources. Bodies Sent Across India and Abroad Of those killed, 2 bodies have been sent to foreign countries, while 11 were transported to states outside Gujarat. The majority of 202 bodies have been taken to locations within Gujarat by road. The victims included 123 Indian nationals, 27 British nationals, four Portuguese citizens, and one Canadian. Four others who died were not passengers. Authorities clarified that the four non-passenger fatalities occurred on the ground during the crash impact. The only survivor of the crash, Vishwaskumar Ramesh, is reported to be stable and was discharged from the hospital at 7:30 pm on Tuesday. His family had arrived in Ahmedabad from the UK earlier this week. However, a critically injured patient who had suffered extensive burns and was on a ventilator unfortunately succumbed to injuries on Tuesday, taking the death count among the wounded to three. Injured Patients Still Under Treatment As of now, 7 patients remain admitted at Ahmedabad's Civil Hospital, while 12 others are being treated in various hospitals across Gujarat, including Zydus and Apollo. Civil Hospital had initially admitted 71 injured passengers on the day of the crash. So far, 3 have died, while the rest are under observation or have been discharged. Amid rumours regarding medical student casualties, Dr. Joshi clarified that no students from BJ Medical College have died since admission. All student fatalities occurred during the crash itself and were declared dead on arrival.
