James Colzie III, FAMU football learning from 'past mistakes' during 2025 spring practices
It's still early, but James Colzie III likes who his second Florida A&M football team is shaping up to be.
The Rattlers' head coach proctored his fourth out of 15 spring practices on Friday as his team began incorporating shoulder pads this week.
What stands out to Colzie in FAMU football's formative days of spring camp is the squad's quality of players and the healthy mesh of personalities.
Florida A&M head coach James Colzie III looks on during the Rattlers' first spring football practice of 2025 on Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida, Friday, March 7, 2025.
'We got some talented guys on the field, and I think we're a lot closer as a football team right now than we were at this stage last year,' Colzie told the Tallahassee Democrat after Friday's practice.

'We got some guys who can do some good things once they get the ball in their hands. And we got some guys on defense flying around and adjusting to some of the new schemes that we're running.'
Talent isn't everything, however.
Colzie is urging his team to play cohesive and heady football, which was his pre-practice message to his team on Friday.
Colzie spoke of the FAMU being plagued with unsportsmanlike penalties in 2024, a season that saw them finish with a 7-5 record. The Rattlers were the 11th most penalized team in the nation last year, losing 73 yards per game from flags.
'I just think that as a football team and the veterans that we have, we just have to learn from past mistakes. We can't repeat those. Sometimes those mistakes were small, but at times, they were big and cost us drives, points, and ultimately football games,' Colzie explained.

'If we can learn from some of the undisciplined things we did last year, that will help us as a football team,' Colzie later added.
Rattlers running back Thad Franklin Jr. says he and his FAMU football teammates are absorbing Colzie's lessons.
They know they're good players.

But directing their energy correctly will increase the Rattlers' chances of competing for a Black College Football National Championship and ascending on the Football Championship Subdivision rankings when the regular season begins in August.
'I like what I've been seeing. We're way better and talented than last year,' said Franklin, the single-game rushing yard record holder (195) for the Florida Classic. 'We're just working on being disciplined now because that hurt us last year.'

Next week, the Rattlers will practice on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Thursday will be FAMU's first of three spring scrimmages.
It's an opportunity for players to respond to game-like settings under promoted offensive coordinator Henry Burris, first-year special teams coordinator Kevin Weston, and a modified defensive staff.
'Our guys are learning the new things on the offense and defensive side ― not necessarily schematically, but new coaching styles,' Colzie said. 'We're where I want to be and steadily improving daily.'
Spring camp success hinges on how well the Rattlers practice, with three and a half weeks left until the final meeting on Wednesday, April 16.

FAMU's Orange and Green Spring Game is on Saturday, April 12, at 4 p.m., on Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium.
'Just come every day ready to practice and give 100 percent effort,' Franklin said. 'That's all [Colzie] asks from us. As long we do that, he takes care of us.'

Texas A&M basketball re-offers 2027 5-star small forward
Texas A&M basketball re-offers 2027 5-star small forward With Texas A&M's basketball program under new management, head coach Bucky McMillan is off and running this offseason after adding 13 players to the 2025 roster, including highly coveted Spanish guard Rubén Domínguez, who announced his commitment on Friday afternoon. While the future is bright, the present is even brighter amid the talent McMillan will work with this fall. On the recruiting trail, McMillan has yet to land a 2026 prospect, but has made significant progress over the past month. In the 2027 cycle, Texas A&M has officially re-offered five-star small forward Ryan Hampton, whose previous praise of former head coach Buzz Williams' coaching staff was more based on all-time scoring guard Wade Taylor IV, while the Aggies offered his brother, former NBA guard RJ Hampton. "I've been around that program a lot since they recruited my brother. They have a player presently on their team, Wade Taylor, he is a great player. And he is the guy they need to go out and win them a game.' With the new and exciting Texas A&M staff led by McMillan, Hampton is back in the fold and will continue to consider the Aggies moving forward. With the talent the program has acquired this offseason, Hampton has a baseline to work off of regarding McMillan's ability to recruit. During his 2024-2025 season with Dynamic Prep, Hampton averaged 7.8 points per game and shot above 60% from the field. According to 247Sports Composite, Hampton is currently positioned as the 2nd-ranked prospect in the class, 2nd-ranked small forward, and the No. 1-ranked prospect in Texas. Former Texas A&M wide receiver is facing a season-ending injury
Former Texas A&M wide receiver is facing a season-ending injury The Oregon Ducks received unfortunate news on Friday when it was announced that star wide receiver Evan Stewart suffered an injury that could sideline him for most of the 2025 season, if not the entire year. According to Ducks Wire's Zachary Neel, multiple sources confirmed that former five-star senior WR Evan Stewart sustained a knee injury, which will keep him out for most of next season. The former Texas A&M Aggie was expected to be a key contributor for the Ducks after losing Tex Johnson and Traeshon Holden to the NFL. While at Texas A&M, Stewart showed flashes of talent, recording 91 receptions for 1,163 yards and six touchdowns in his two seasons in the Maroon & White. He earned All-SEC and All-American honors after his freshman season but struggled to stay on the field. Of the 25 possible games, he played in just 18, missing a third of the 2023 season. Stewart will likely use a redshirt year, and we wish him a speedy recovery for the 2026 football season. Texas A&M men's basketball lands huge commitment from three-point deadeye Spanish guard
The Texas A&M men's basketball program landed a commitment from one of the most decorated three-point shooters from overseas on Friday morning. First-year head coach Buck McMillan continued an impressive offseason with the recruitment of Bilbao Basket's Rubén Domínguez. The Spanish guard helped lead his team to the FIBA Europe Cup title with his deadeye shooting from three-point range. Advertisement Here is the official announcement from Jon Chepkevich, who is the director of scouting for Draft Express: Domínguez has been a superstar for his home country and the Bilbao Basket organization for years now, as the 6'6" guard aided Spain to a silver medal at the 2018 FIBA U16 European Championship and helped push Bilbao Basket over the hump to secure the 2025 FIBA Championship title. In his career playing for Spain, he has accumulated 153 games played, 5.7 points per game, 1.4 rebounds per contest and a .362 field goal percentage. Domínguez also received Spanish ACB Week 13 Player of the Week honors in 2025. Advertisement The addition of the Spanish guard adds to an already impressive recruiting class put together by McMillan and the Texas A&M coaching staff. He joins names such as Creighton guard Pop Isaacs and Indiana forward Mackenzie Mgbako, both signed with the Aggies during the offseason. As time inches closer to the Aggies hitting the hardwood in Reed Arena this season, McMillan's roster continues to glimmer with promise at all positions, but especially at guard.
