‘Good f***ing riddance': Outpouring of loathing at Andrew Cuomo on socials as Gen Z celebrates Mamdami
There was an outpouring of mockery against former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo following his concession to Zohran Mamdani in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor.
'Andrew Cuomo is in the past, he's not the present or future of New York City,' said city comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander, who cross-endorsed with Mamdani. 'Good f****** riddance.'
'Brad Lander is a hero. A true, selfless, courageous, talented hero,' Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrote on X.
Cynthia Nixon, who challenged Cuomo in the governor's race in 2018, also celebrated the news with an image on her Instagram story, writing that Mamdani 'has crushed Andrew Cuomo in the NYC primary for Mayor!!!' as she joined top progressives at Mamdani's election night party.
Democratic strategist Mike Nellis wrote on X that Lander shouting 'good f******* riddance' is 'the energy I want from every Democrat in 2026 and 2028.'
Lindsey Boylan is one of several women who accused Cuomo of sexual harassment, allegations he has denied.
'Survivors: we fight and win together,' she wrote on X.
'It is truly the case that some of the most powerful forces in this city and country were working against us the whole time,' she added. 'I've never seen a more apt description of true people power than the fight we have all been in these last several months together.'
Cuomo conceded defeat to Mamdani on Tuesday night.
'Tonight is his night,' he told supporters. 'He deserved it. He won.'
A candidate must receive more than 50 percent of the vote to be declared the winner, which neither Cuomo nor Mamdani achieved. However, with 93 percent of the votes counted on Tuesday night, Mamdani was in the lead with 43.5 percent to Cuomo's 36.4 percent. Ranked-choice voting results for citywide elections will be tallied in the coming days.
If elected in November's general election, Mamdani, 33, would become the first Muslim and Indian-American mayor of the city. He campaigned on cost-of-living issues and received the votes of many college-educated progressives.
His digital native campaign, fueled by young progressives, upset what many pundits believed was Cuomo's election to win, as the former governor was backed by a $25 million effort to shut Mamdani out of the race.
Voters between the ages of 25-34 made up roughly one-quarter of all early votes cast.
'Young people got a clear message tonight,' wrote David Hogg, the 25-year-old activist who campaigned in New York on Tuesday to support Mamdani. 'Do not listen to the naysayers and two-face politicians who say you can't win when you challenge a broken and corrupt system. It has never been more clear — the establishment has never been more weak than they are now.'
'After watching Mamdani v Cuomo, any smart Democrat thinking about running for president in 2028 should recognize that taking the Biden line on Israel is a political disaster,' Peter Beinart, an editor-at-large at Jewish Currents, added.
'Never forget the politicians who called for Andrew Cuomo to resign as governor then turned around and endorsed him for mayor. You people are why people don't trust politicians,' wrote New York City Council member Chi Ossé. 'You are the reason people are leaving the Democratic Party,'
'It took five months of Trump for a socialist to beat a Cuomo in New York,' podcast host Noah Kulwin added.
After more than 10 years in office, Cuomo resigned as governor in 2021 amid a series of sexual harassment allegations.
While he conceded the Democratic primary, Cuomo has indicated that he may still run as an independent in the general election, joining a crowded ballot with Mamdani, Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, and current Mayor Eric Adams.
'Tonight, we made history,' Mamdani told supporters after midnight on Tuesday. 'In the words of Nelson Mandela, it always seems impossible until it is done. My friends, we have done it.'
'I will be your Democratic nominee for the mayor of New York City,' he added.
Governor Kathy Hochul, who succeeded Cuomo, said on X that 'voters made their voices heard, demanding a more affordable, more livable New York City. I hear them loud and clear.'
She added that Mamdani 'built a formidable grassroots coalition, and I look forward to speaking with him in the days ahead about his ideas on how to ensure a safe, affordable, and livable New York City.'
'Your dedication to an affordable, welcoming, and safe New York City where working families can have a shot has inspired people across the city,' Ocasio-Cortez wrote.
'Billionaires and lobbyists poured millions against you and our public finance system. And you won,' she added.

Donald Trump 's Education Secretary Linda McMahon is threatening to pull California 's federal education funding for allowing transgender girls to play sports on girls' teams. The federal Education Department announced proposed a resolution Wednesday requiring California to bar transgender women from women's sports and strip transgender athletes of records, titles and awards. It's the latest escalation in Trump's effort to bar transgender athletes from women's sports teams nationwide. If California rejects the proposal, the Education Department could move to terminate the state's federal education funding. Under federal guidelines, California's education office and the sports federation have 10 days to come into compliance or risk enforcement action. 'The Trump Administration will relentlessly enforce Title IX protections for women and girls, and our findings today make clear that California has failed to adhere to its obligations under federal law,' McMahon said. 'The state must swiftly come into compliance with Title IX or face the consequences that follow.' Title IX is a 1972 law forbidding sex discrimination based in education. California education and sports officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment Wednesday. Federal officials opened an investigation into the California Interscholastic Federation in February after the organization said it would abide by a state law allowing athletes to compete on teams consistent with their gender identity. That followed an executive order signed by President Donald Trump that was intended to ban transgender athletes from participating in girls and women's sports. In April, McMahon's department opened an investigation into the California Department of Education over the same issue. Both investigations concluded that state policies violated Title IX. The administration has been invoking the law in its campaign against transgender athletes, launching scores of investigations into schools, colleges and states. It's a reversal from the Biden administration, which attempted to expand Title IX to provide protections for transgender students. A federal judge struck down the expansion before Trump took office in January. The administration's proposed resolution would require California to notify schools that transgender athletes should be barred from girls athletic teams and that all schools must 'adopt biology-based definitions of the words "male" and "female."' The state would also have to notify schools that any conflicting interpretation of state law would be considered a violation of Title IX. Athletes who lost awards, titles or records to transgender athletes would have their honors restored under the proposal, and the state would be required to send personal apology letters to those athletes. A similar resolution was offered to Maine's education agency in a separate clash with the administration over transgender athletes. Maine rejected the proposal in April, prompting a Justice Department lawsuit seeking to terminate the state's federal education funding. The California federation separately tested a pilot policy at a state track meet in May, allowing one extra competitor in three events featuring high school junior AB Hernandez, who is trans. The organization announced the change after Trump took to social medial to criticize Hernandez's participation. The Justice Department said it would investigate Hernandez's district and the state to determine if Title IX was being violated. The American Medical Association and American Psychiatric Association have both stated that gender is a spectrum and not a binary structure, as the White House argued in its January 20 executive order 'defending women from gender ideology.' A recent Associated Press poll found that 7 in 10 American adults want transgender female athletes banned from girls and women's sports at the high school, college or professional level. Although the issue continues to make headlines, the number of transgender athletes in female sports remains very low. NCAA President Charlie Baker said in January that only 10 publicly transgender athletes were currently competing among the organization's 510,000 student athletes. A 2023 UCLA study estimated that fewer than 1 percent of US adults identify as transgender. About half of US adults approve of Trump's handling transgender issues, according to a May poll — a relative high point for a president who has the approval overall of about 4 in 10 Americans. But support for his individual policies on transgender people is not uniformly strong, with a clearer consensus against policies that affect youth. The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research survey of 1,175 adults conducted this month found there's more support than opposition on allowing transgender troops in the military, while most don't want to allow transgender students to use the public school bathrooms that align with their gender identity and oppose using government programs to pay for gender-affirming health care for transgender youth.

Trump administration says California must bar trans girls from girls sports
The Trump administration said Wednesday that California must change its policies allowing transgender girls to compete on sports teams consistent with their gender identity. The U.S. Department of Education said it determined California's education department and governing body for high school sports are violating Title IX, a federal law banning sex discrimination in education. The federal government said California must agree to change its policies in 10 days or 'risk imminent enforcement action." The administration could otherwise refer the state to the U.S. Justice Department, the Education Department said. California, though, said it has no plans to change its policies. 'The California Department of Education believes all students should have the opportunity to learn and play at school, and we have consistently applied existing law in support of students' rights to do so,' agency spokesperson Liz Sanders said in a statement. U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon invoked Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom's remarks on his podcast in March questioning the fairness of trans girls competing in girls sports. 'The Trump Administration will relentlessly enforce Title IX protections for women and girls, and our findings today make clear that California has failed to adhere to its obligations under federal law,' she said in a statement. She told Fox News the agency may pull federal funding if the state does not comply. The Education Department said the state should apologize and restore awards to girls who lost sports titles to trans athletes, and notify school sports programs that receive federal funding that Title IX prohibits trans girls from participating in girls sports. The announcement comes weeks after a trans student athlete garnered national attention over her participation in the California high school state track and field championship. The student, AB Hernandez, placed first in the girls high jump and triple jump, and second in the long jump. The California Interscholastic Federation, which ran the meet, awarded gold and silver medals to both Hernandez and other competitors who would have placed had she not participated. It was the first time the federation made such a rule change. The issue is part of a nationwide battle over the rights of transgender youth in which states have limited transgender girls from participating on girls sports teams, barred gender-affirming surgeries for minors and required parents to be notified if a child changes their pronouns at school. At least two dozen states have laws barring transgender women and girls from participating in certain sports competitions. Some of the policies have been blocked in court. Former California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a law in 2013 allowing students to participate in sex-segregated school programs, including on sports teams, and use bathrooms and other facilities that align with their gender identity. Newsom spokesperson Izzy Gardon said McMahon's threat to pull federal funding over the state's policy was 'dramatic, fake, and completely divorced from reality.' The California Interscholastic Federation declined to respond to the announcement, saying it does not comment on legal matters. The federation is violating the U.S. Constitution by allowing trans girls to compete in sex-segregated sports consistent with their gender identity, said Harmeet Dhillon, U.S. assistant attorney general for civil rights, in a letter after the state track and field finals. The California Family Council, a conservative group that opposes trans girls' competition in girls sports, applauded the federal government's findings Wednesday. 'This decision is a critical step toward restoring fairness and protecting the integrity of girls' sports in our state," Sophia Lorey, an advocate for the group, said in a statement. But Equality California, an LGBTQ+ advocacy organization, said the findings were a 'dangerous distortion of Title IX and a direct attack on transgender youth in California.' To dig themselves deeper into trouble when the Serie A season begins, both went on to suggest US restaurants were better. Their comments prompted Emiliano Viviano, the former goalkeeper, to suggest in mock dismay that Italy's Prime Minister should take away their visas. McKennie and Weah were being interviewed for the Juventus Talk With Us podcast when they were asked about the local cuisine since arriving in Serie A. 'You guys don't have variety - it's pasta, pizza, fish, steak,' said McKennie. 'You know what the problem is with Italian food? It's great, it's good specific food that you do very well, but in America if I go to a burger joint or a steakhouse, then I go to another place 10 minutes down the street, I'm still eating a burger, but it's a completely different taste. In Italy, I go to this restaurant and get a pesto pasta, I go 10 minutes down the street and order a pesto pasta, it's the same thing.' Weah agreed he 'prefers Italian-American food' to the real thing. The comments sparked inevitable outrage in Italy, with former Arsenal, Palermo, Fiorentina and Sampdoria goalkeeper Viviano telling TV Play: 'The United States is the country with the worst food in the world. They would even deep-fry the soles of their shoes. If I was (Italian Prime Minister Giorgia) Meloni, I wouldn't let him back into Italy! 'How can you say there's no variety in Italian cuisine? His very definition of 'variety' irritated me. McKennie, there are 200 million of you Americans and all you ever eat are hamburgers. 'The truth is, all the food in America was brought there by other nations. I just want to tell McKennie that he has achieved the incredible feat of managing to unite all of Italy against him. It is not about fans anymore, he can be insulted by absolutely everybody.' According to the Football Italia website, McKennie's food choices had already shocked Juventus team-mates, as they were 'famously horrified when he suggested cookies and brownies in pasta' or 'ranch dressing on pizza'. 'Most recently, he proclaimed his special recipe of 'pasta with pesto, tomato and chicken,' the website adds. Juventus are currently competing at the Club World Cup and are leading Group G ahead of a showdown with Manchester City on Thursday.
