Alex Cullen confirms surprise new role after getting brutally fired from Today: 'This is an exciting next chapter for me'

Daily Mail5 hours ago

Alex Cullen has confirmed his surprising new role, almost six months after he was fired from the Today show for accepting a $50,000 gift from controversial Block bidder Adrian Portelli.
In January, the presenter, 44, was given the sizeable sum after he was the first media personality to use Portelli's self-proclaimed nickname 'McLaren Man' live on air - sparking a firestorm which resulted in him leaving Channel Nine.
He has now secured a new role as a sports presenter on Melbourne 's Gold 1043.3's top-rating breakfast program The Christian O'Connell Show.
Host Christian O'Connell confirmed the exciting news live on-air on Thursday.
'Alex Cullen is brilliant journalist who is looking for a job! You might recognise the name, he's the guy who took the $50,000... That's our guy!' Christian began.

Christian added the commercial radio sector had different rules than TV and so they were happy to welcome Alex to their team.
'Now Channel Nine might go, "Listen, we can't have that", but commercial breakfast radio... We are very much up for payola! Don't worry Alex, you have found a home here, my friend,' he said.
Alex shared his excitement at joining the show in a statement.
'This is such an exciting next chapter for me,' he wrote.
'I actually started my career in radio, so to be coming back to it and joining a show that's so loved and so full of heart is a real thrill.
'I can't wait to be on air with Christian, Pats and Rio, and to get to know Melbourne – my family and I are thrilled to be making it our new home.'
He will officially join the show next month, after Christian's co- star Jack Post announced his resignation last month.
Earlier this year, Alex was axed from the Nine Network after he accepted $50,000 from The Block billionaire Adrian Portelli.
Today host Karl Stefanovic made the announcement that Alex had left the network live on-air.
'As most of you are well aware, our colleague Alex Cullen has not been on air with us this past week,' a solemn Stefanovic told viewers.
'There has been widespread reporting on the circumstances surrounding this, what I can say is that last night, Alex and Nine agreed he would finish with the network.
'Alex has, of course, been part of the Today family for five years now, he's always ready with a smile and a laugh and without hesitation speaking for all of us here, we can say that we are going to miss him terribly.
'A terrific fella, what you see is what you get and he has been a great mate to all of us over these years and we wish Alex, his wife Bonnie and his beautiful kids all the very best for the future.'
A Nine spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia: 'Nine has agreed with Today presenter and journalist Alex Cullen that he will finish with the network following a review into a recent incident.'
The scandal kicked off when Portelli had grown tired of his long-used nickname 'Mr Lambo' and offered the cash reward to the first person to use his new moniker on air, with Alex obliging on the Today show.
The Block entrepreneur then posted what appeared to be a bank transfer of $50,000 to the presenter on Instagram.
Accepting cash, gifts or benefits to undermine journalistic independence, and improperly using a journalistic position for personal gain, are both breaches of the journalism code of ethics as defined by the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance union.
The ill-advised stunt led to Alex being suspended by Nine and he did not appear on the show while the network investigated the payment.
Nine's parting of ways with Alex went ahead despite Portelli's claim that the journalist intended the money to be paid to charity all along.
Network insiders also told Daily Mail Australia that the stunt could have been beneficial for the network and Portelli, if Alex had advised the promoter that, as a journalist, he was unable to accept any payment for making the comment on-air.

Richard Wilkins celebrates 71st birthday in style with towering $150 chocolate cake adorned with strawberries

Channel Nine star Richard Wilkins celebrated his 71st birthday on Thursday. And his devoted colleagues at Today took to Instagram to share a touching tribute to the media veteran, who has been with a brekkie show for over three decades. Today posted a photo of Richard in a smart black suit posing alongside a lavish cake topped with strawberries, which included a message in chocolate icing, 'Happy Birthday Legend'. The delicious looking dessert priced at $150 also included a decoration styled as an '80s TV set complete with V-shaped antennae. And inserted into the television 'screen' was a throwback image of Richard sporting his trademark 'wave' haircut. The breakfast team from Nine also included a caption in the post, 'Happy birthday to the heart and soul of TODAY entertainment, our beloved Dickie! 'We hope your day is every bit as legendary as you are.' It comes after the TV stalwart opened up earlier this year about his 38 years working in television. And in a surprising twist the entertainment editor admitted he had a fair share of regrets. The Nine star, who began working for the network in 1987, revealed in January he wishes he tried harder to become a pop star. While he holds much pride in the TV work he has done over the years, the Weekend Today co-host told The Sunday Telegraph he regrets he stopped writing songs. 'I don't think I'd do too much differently, I was playing in bands and wanted to be an actor there for a while,' he said, when asked what he would change about his career. 'I wish I'd kept writing songs because I thought some of them were starting to get quite good and the comeback to that is, "Well it is never too late to stop."' 'But I had an opportunity that came along when television was in a great growth spurt and music television, MTV, came along and it was just a perfect combination of everything that I had done.' Richard went on to say his first gig on MTV when it launched on Nine in the late '80s came at the 'right time, right place', and he would never take it back. He said he 'worked really hard' and has 'enjoyed the majority' of his stint in television, even if it didn't shoot him to rock star status as he hoped it would. Despite being just a few years off his 40th anniversary with Nine, Richard doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon. The TV presenter said he doesn't know what he would do with himself if he wasn't working. Richard has worked in breakfast television for many years and also hosts weekend radio on Smooth FM. On the side, the media personality is producing a movie and has plans to write a second book following his 2011 memoir Black Ties, Red Carpets, Green Rooms. He was an aspiring pop singer when he first started working in the entertainment industry while still living in New Zealand where he was born. But Richard said working for MTV was 'a perfect combination of everything I have done' previously in showbusiness. It seems the apple doesn't fall far from the tree as Richard's son Christian Wilkins landed the role of red carpet host for the prestigious ARIA Awards last November.

The man making her smile again? Georgia Love sparks rumours of a new romance as she enjoys 'night out' with fellow radio star following public split from husband Lee Elliot

Has Georgia Love already got a new beau? An array of recent snaps has seen fans of The Bachelorette star, 35, speculate over her current relationship status, with one Instagram post sending them into a frenzy. Georgia, who parted ways with her husband of four years Lee Elliot in February, took to Instagram on Wednesday to share a selfie as she attended the opening night of the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch in Melbourne. However, the newly single reality star wore a huge grin on her face as she posed for the camera with work pal Gareth Thomson, who accompanied her on the night out on the town. In the picture, the former reality TV star paired large gold hoops with a denim dress and a black coat as she gleamed in the sweet snap. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Georgia was glowing as she rocked a bronzed makeup look paired with a nude pink lip. As for her musical buddy, who also works with her at Australian Radio Network, Gareth wore a black jacket over a black shirt, unbuttoned to show a little bit of chest hair for the night out. Georgia's curly-haired, moustache-laden company also wore a big smile as he posed next to the stunning brunette. However, it was Georgia's caption of the post that really raised eyebrows and sent tongues wagging. 'Your mum and dad had a midweek night out and sent a photo as proof,' she wrote across the picture while tagging Gareth. A follow-up picture showed Gareth taking a picture of the pair's matching glittery boots before they headed into the show. Georgia and Gareth posed together on the red carpet, cuddling up close as they enjoyed their night out at the theatre. Daily Mail Australia has reached out to Georgia and Gareth for comment. This isn't the first time the pair have been spotted attending musicals together. In May, Georgia and Gareth attended the opening night of Hadestown at Her Majesty's Theatre in Melbourne, where they posed on the red carpet side-by-side. Gareth is also in showbiz, with his Instagram biography indicating that he was the writer of Schapelle, Schapelle - The Musical based on the life of Schapelle Corby. It comes after news that Georgia and ex-husband Lee are set to put their marital home in Melbourne under the hammer. The high-profile pair, who first met on the 2016 season of The Bachelorette before announcing their split earlier this year, have listed the spacious Hampton East pad with a price range of $1.5million to $1.58million. Love and Elliot, who announced their split in February, paid an estimated $1.35million for the chic ultra-modern two-storey townhouse in 2021. They flaunted their original purchase of the property back in October 2021 on social media after it was listed for sale between $1.3million and $1.35million. The couple shared a series of pictures showing them standing in front of their new home, with a 'sold' sign in the background. The news of the sale of the home comes after Love and Elliot, who were married for four years, announced their breakup four months ago. The couple broke the news of their separation with identical posts on Instagram in February. 'After nine wonderful years together, including four as husband and wife, [we] have made the incredibly difficult decision to lovingly part ways,' they wrote. 'Our relationship has been so special and we will always cherish the memories, love, and laughter we've shared. 'There is no drama, no bad blood' the emotional statement continued. 'Just two people who have grown in different directions while still holding deep respect and care for each other.

See how State of Origin star exposed troll on social media after copping disgraceful abuse like 'I hope you get charged with sexual assault'

NSW Blues star Liam Martin has exposed a troll on social media after the backrower was abused online following Queensland 's 26-24 win on Wednesday night in game two of the Origin series. Martin used an Instagram story to share the disgraceful comments, which included being labelled a 'ugly human' and hoping the four-time NRL premiership winner with Penrith 'gets accused of sexual assault.' The person who posted the vile message - known as Beau - also stated: 'You look like you don't wash your hair. You you [sic] are disgrace to rugby league.' Martin posted in response: 'Don't be like Beau.' His Origin teammate Zac Lomax was also reportedly targeted online. It comes just days after a man, 20, was charged by NSW Police for allegedly sending death threats and abusive messages to Newcastle Knights star James Schiller. Martin used an Instagram story (pictured) to share the disgraceful comments, which included being labelled a 'ugly human' and hoping the four-time premiership winner with Penrith 'gets accused of sexual assault' Schiller, 23, was targeted with a string of vile messages following his team's dramatic comeback win over Manly recently. The abuse came despite Newcastle pulling off their biggest turnaround in 18 years, recovering from a 16-0 halftime deficit to claim a 26-22 golden point victory at McDonald Jones Stadium on June 5. On social media, several accounts piled on, labelling Schiller 'one of the worst NRL players I've ever seen,' and claiming he 'wouldn't stand out for Taree Turtles reserve grade.' But one message crossed the line, and Schiller shared it publicly. 'Count your days c*** I will end your f***ing life,' the message read, sent to his Instagram inbox early in the second half. Even after the Knights sealed victory, the same account continued to abuse him and added some shocking homophobic comments involving former Queensland Origin star Dane Gagai. 'Doesn't make up for it even though you won. 5 errors, 2 penalties, 1 six again and partridge in a pear tree I hope Dane [Gagai] jams his c*** down your throat and you choke and die.' Schiller posted screenshots of the messages to his Instagram story, drawing attention to the darker side of fan behaviour at a time when mental health support for young men and athletes is being heavily promoted across the country. Abuse aimed at young NRL players (pictured) continues to spark debate around online behaviour and athlete mental health support Knights coach Adam O'Brien said the threats against Schiller were a concern. 'That is worrying,' he said. 'I want to protect for him to go through that over a couple of errors….it's a game of footy. 'He's got a family. That's partly the reason why you do want to protect them. 'I think it's a societal problem, isn't it? It's not just football players who are getting that sort of stuff. 'We need to be able to stop people doing it, change their thought process before doing it.' Lake Macquarie police have since arrested and charged a man over the matter. He was charged with use of carriage service to menace, harass or offend.
