Dust storm, light rain hit parts of Delhi-NCR; IMD predicts more showers, strong winds

Time of Indiaa day ago

Parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) witnessed a
dust storm
followed by light rain on Sunday evening, shortly after the
India Meteorological Department
(IMD) issued a forecast for showers and strong winds.
According to the IMD, southern parts of the city were likely to receive very light to light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and wind speeds ranging from 30–40 kmph, gusting up to 50 kmph. The weather activity was attributed to an east-southeastward moving cloud cluster, ANI reported.
Earlier in the day, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 27.2 degrees Celsius, marginally above the seasonal average by 0.3 degrees. The maximum temperature was expected to settle around 38 degrees Celsius.

Flightmare! Storms Wreaking Havoc On Airport Schedules

New Delhi: Last month, over 75 flights were diverted when thunderstorms with speeds of 50-80 kmph hit Delhi airport . While thunderstorms pass in a few minutes, they cause a cascading effect, leading to flight delays throughout the day. Around IGI airport, 45 thunderstorms normally occur in a year, and of these, 29 strike from May to Aug. Thunderstorms are often accompanied by lightning, wind gusts, squalls and hail, impacting flights during different stages of operations, including takeoff, cruising and landing. When a thunderstorm hits an airport, wind direction changes frequently. A flight cannot take off or land if the wind direction is not uniform. In May 2018, about 70 Delhi-bound flights were diverted — the highest impact of thunderstorms in summer in the past few years. However, in the last month, six major thunderstorms happened in the city, impacting flight operations. On May 2, an intense thunderstorm, accompanied by a squall of 74kmph, diverted three Delhi-bound flights to other cities. Over 500 flights were delayed due to a ripple effect on the network of airlines. In aviation terminology, a "go-around" describes a safety procedure where pilots abandon their landing attempt and the aircraft ascends back to a safe altitude to either attempt another landing or divert to another airport. Significant impact was seen on May 25 when a thunderstorm diverted 49 flights to other cities. "Of all the weather-related hazards, thunderstorms have the highest impact on aviation across the world. During a thunderstorm, an aircraft experiences turbulence as air currents are unstable, leading to updrafts and downdrafts," said R K Jenamani, senior scientist, IMD. Updraft is a strong column of rising air that can suddenly lift the aircraft while downdraft is a rapid column of sinking air, which often happens after the updraft weakens, causing an aircraft to lose altitude. A study, 'Characteristics of Thunderstorms and Squalls over IGI Airport', which analysed data from 1995 to 2005, found the maximum thunderstorms in June followed by July, and maximum squalls in May followed by June. "More than 80% of thunderstorms in each season are of duration less than three hours, with the remaining mostly 3-6 hours. For pre-monsoon months, the most favourable timing of thunderstorms and squalls is 1200-1500 UTC, while for monsoon, it starts earlier," said the study. Another study, 'Bad Weather and Aircraft Accidents – Global Vis-à-vis Indian Scenario', found 21% of aircraft accidents in India during 1992-2008 were weather-related. Across the globe, it was 26-32%. The study revealed the highest number of these accidents was due to wind-related factors, like gusts, updrafts, downdrafts and low visibility, each responsible for 16% of total weather-related accidents. About 12% of weather-related accidents were due to cumulonimbus and thunderstorms. In the US, 48% was due to bad wind conditions, as found for India, followed by 20.5% due to low visibility and ceiling.

Dhami reviews preparations in state ahead of monsoon

Dehradun: With the India Meteorological Department 's (IMD) warning of an above-average rainfall for Uttarakhand during the upcoming monsoon, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday chaired a high-level meeting at the secretariat to review preparations. Emphasising on a proactive disaster management, Dhami directed officials to ensure all drains across the state are cleaned before the monsoon begins. He instructed disaster response systems in all districts to remain on high alert, with toll-free helplines to be activated in all districts and tehsils to assist citizens promptly during emergencies. The CM also called for measures to prevent dengue, malaria, and covid-19 during the rainy season. Additionally, the CM urged district officials to work on five best practices and innovations related to public interest in their districts. He announced that the first three districts in the state to become TB-free would be rewarded. Emphasising on the need for environmental and civic initiatives, Dhami directed all district officials to conduct regular cleanliness drives and to launch a large-scale tree plantation campaign from June 5 (World Environment Day) to July 25. "Regular monitoring of water source conservation and the progress on Amrit Sarovars should be carried out, and a nodal officer should be appointed in each district for this purpose," he added. In view of the upcoming International Yoga Day, Dhami said that a comprehensive awareness campaign should be conducted in all districts, and yoga camps should be organised on a large scale. "On the occasion of the Kainchi Dham foundation day on June 15, traffic management should be arranged with the necessary temporary parking facilities," he added. A special drive to remove illegal encroachments along the roadsides was also directed. "Boards and banners related to the 1064 helpline should be prominently displayed in govt offices to promote a corruption-free Uttarakhand," said Dhami.

IMD sounds alert for heavy rain, strong winds in Gurgaon

Gurgaon: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued on Monday an orange alert for the next two days across south and west Haryana, including Gurgaon, warning of gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph, accompanied by heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The weather brought a brief respite from the heat, with the city's minimum temperature dropping to 23.5 degrees Celsius, 1.3 degrees lower than the previous day. The maximum temperature was 34.3 degrees Celsius, which was 1.4 notches lower than the previous day. According to IMD forecasts, both maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to rise by around 4°C after June 5. Residents are advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms, secure loose objects, and follow safety advisories issued by local authorities. The forecast warns of gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-60 kmph, accompanied by lightning and intense showers. This raises concerns about possible waterlogging and disruptions. Authorities advised residents to stay indoors during peak storm hours and to take necessary precautions to avoid travel delays and safety risks. "These showers could be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds of 40-60 kmph," the IMD forecast said. The department also mentioned that no major change in maximum temperatures is expected over the next three days, after which a gradual rise of 2-4 degrees Celsius is likely.
