Servin Sebastian
CHENNAI: Last year, race walker Servin Sebastian was close to qualifying for the Paris Olympics. He had breached the Olympic qualification mark at the National Race Walking Championships but later his timing was not considered due to faulty readings in the competition.
He then had another go at the qualification mark but fell short. The 25-year-old went through a tough period but has bounced back strongly this season by winning medals in all competitions that he has competed in.
On Tuesday, Servin added another feather to his cap as he clinched bronze in the Asian Athletics Championships men's 20km race walk with a personal-best timing of 1:21:13.60 in Gumi.
In his maiden continental meet, Servin remained with the lead group until the 18km mark.
However, he slowed down towards the end, allowing China's Wang Zhao and Kento Yoshikawa of Japan to surge ahead and secure gold and silver respectively.
'I could have won gold, but a major mistake cost me the victory. I was feeling tired, and the coaches have always insisted that I should not take a water break in the final kilometre. Since the race course's distance was two kilometres, I decided to take a break at the 18km mark.

I had done everything correctly until then, but my lack of experience worked against me,' Servin told TOI from South Korea.
Servin's coach Ganapathi Krishnan, who competed in 20km race walk at the Rio Olympics, reiterated what his student said and felt that his presence could have helped him perform better. 'I am happy for him, but I am not satisfied as a coach. He had good training sessions, and I expected him to clock a better time.
I felt that he needed someone to guide him during the race,' Ganapathi said.
Servin joined the Army Sports Institute (ASI) in Pune in 2022, and since then, Ganapathi has been his guiding light. Ganapathi played a pivotal role in Servin's comeback after he failed to qualify for the Paris Olympics. 'Servin joined the Army in 2020 but started training at the ASI in 2022. Servin performed well during trials, but there were a few technical issues that needed to be tweaked.
He has developed into a better athlete since then,' Ganapathi added.
Servin has had a good start to the season, winning gold medals at the National Games and the National Race Walking Championships. With these performances, the 25-year-old is placed 45th on the 'Road to the World Championships' list. By winning bronze at the Asian meet, Servin will move into the top-40. Athletes who do not meet the qualification mark will have to be ranked in the top-50 to make it to the Worlds.

Josh Inglis (39 in 23 balls, with a four and four sixes) and Shashank Singh (61* in 30 balls, three wins and six sixes) tried their level best to keep up with the rising run rate, but Krunal Panddya (2/17), Yash Dayal (1/18) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/38) put a fine show with the ball to restrict PBKS to 184/7, despite a sensational 22 runs smashed by Shashank in the final over while needing 29. Vijay Mallya recalls picking Virat Kohli for RCB as a youngster: ‘Remarkable he stayed for 18 years'

Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya was in a celebratory mood as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) lifted the IPL trophy after 18 long years. RCB earned a place in the history books after trouncing Punjab Kings in the final of the 18th season of IPL to bring the trophy home for the first time in 18 years. In a post shared on the social media platform X, the former owner of RCB recalled picking Virat Kohli for the team at its inception and said it was his dream to bring the IPL trophy to Bengaluru. 'When I founded RCB it was my dream that the IPL trophy should come to Bengaluru,' wrote Vijay Mallya. 'I had the privilege of picking the legendary King Kohli as a youngster and it is remarkable that he has stayed with RCB for 18 years. 'I also had the honour of picking Chris Gayle the Universe Boss and Mr 360 AB DeVillers who remain an indelible part of RCB history. 'Finally, the IPL trophy arrives in Bengaluru. Congratulations and thanks again to all who made my dream come true. RCB fans are the very best and they deserve the IPL trophy. Ee Sala Cup Bengaluru baruthe!' he wrote. After the establishment of IPL, an auction was held in January 2008 which represented eight different cities in India. The Bangalore franchise was acquired by Vijay Mallya. Mallya paid $111.6 million for the franchise, making it the second most expensive - just behind Reliance-owned Mumbai Indians. RCB acquired several high-profile Indian and international players, including Jacques Kallis, Anil Kumble and Zaheer Khan. In the second round of the auction, they also signed India under-19 World Cup-winning captain Virat Kohli. He was yet to turn 18. In nearly two decades with RCB, Virat Kohli has of course gone from strength to strength. His words after the IPL 2025 win give a glimpse into what the win means for him. "This win is as much for the fans as it is for the team. It's been 18 long years. I've given this team my youth, prime and experience. I've tried to win it every season, gave it everything I have,' said Kohli. 'To finally have it is an unbelievable feeling. Never thought this day would come, I was overcome with emotion after the last ball was bowled.'

Asian Athletics Championships 2025 gold medallist, Haryana's Pooja Singh: No challenge can stop me!

Athlete Pooja Singh grabbed the gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships 2025 in South Korea, on Friday (May 30). Notably, she achieved the feat with torn spikes! Now back home in Fatehabad, the Haryana girl tells us the first thing she did upon returning: 'I handed over the medal to my parents. Jab unhone mera medal apne haath mein liya, unki aankhon mein bahut garv aur khushi thi... It was a special feeling that can't be explained in words.' For the 18-year-old high jumper's parents – who've celebrated every occasion be it big or small – this feat for India made them feel 'very proud'. Especially since her leap of 1.89m broke her own U-20 national record set last year at the 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships in Peru. Mention it, and the teen responds with humility: 'I didn't celebrate too much because I had to return to my training.' Pooja is a first-year college student pursuing bachelors in Physical Education and Sports. Being a sportsperson, she is cognisant of how fickle fame is. Long before the medals and ensuing spotlight, she had been training in dusty fields. 'I used bamboo poles in place of proper crossbars. Sach kahun toh itne bade competition mein maine phate huye spikes par kinesiology tape laga kar khela tha,' she adds. But nothing has ever seemed like an extenuating circumstance for this grounded girl. She reflects: 'What if my shoes were torn in this championship, or I have trained with bamboos in the past? Agar mere paas kuchh nahin hai toh uska matlab yeh nahin ki main life mein kuchh bada achieve nahin kar sakti! I believe in three things — hard work, discipline, and dedication — baaki sab sambhal jayega. There is no challenge in life that can or should stop me from achieving my dreams.' Her steely conviction and quiet determination also stem from her compass cum coach, Balwan Parta. 'Mere coach mere parent hain, guide bhi, aur dost bhi. Main unse ladti hoon aur seekhti bhi hoon,' she shares with a smile, while crediting her coach for igniting within her the passion for this sport. Pooja adds, 'My coach taught me that medals toh aate rahenge, but next jump aur high honi chahiye! Jo jeet liya woh ab peeche reh gaya. Now, the next target is to get back to training immediately and fulfil my ultimate dream — to win India another medal in the 2028 LA Olympics.'
