Horse Power: Big Mojo can win the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock Park

Yahoo23-05-2025

BIG MOJO can secure victory in the Betfred Sandy Lane Stakes (3pm) at Haydock Park on Saturday afternoon. While RUMSTAR can land the Group Two feature, the Betfred Temple Stakes (3.30pm).
Mick Appleby's Big Mojo can seal another win and book his ticket to Royal Ascot and a crack at the Group One Commonwealth Cup. The three-year-old son of Mohaather showed some smart form during his juvenile campaign last year, winning the Group Three Molecomb Stakes over five furlongs at the Glorious Goodwood Festival last July. Big Mojo was also fourth in the Gimcrack Stakes over six furlongs at York; second in the Group Two Flyting Childers at Doncaster and a fine fourth in the Group One Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Del Mar on his final start in November.
Following wind surgery in February, Big Mojo returned to action with victory in the Group Three Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes at Ascot and he looks a progressive young sprinter who can score again. And he will be a big player back in Berkshire at the Royal meeting next month.

Jonathan Portman's Rumstar can win the Temple Stakes, the five-furlong feature of the seven-race card at Haydock. The five-year-old had run well in some top sprint handicaps last year without winning. But he finally put it all together when scoring on his final start of the campaign, beating Beautiful Diamond by two lengths in the Listed BetMGM Rous Stakes at Ascot in October. Despite being in rear early on he came through to score well having led in the final furlong.
He built on that success with an even better effort on his seasonal return in the Group Three Palace House Stakes at Newmarket at the start of the month. He had a couple of his rivals at Haydock behind and he can confirm the form and add another victory at Haydock before potentially moving into Group One company for a crack at the King Charles III Stakes on the opening day of the Royal meeting next month. Jim Goldie's in-form, hat-trick-seeking American Affair and the Ed Walker-trained French import Mgheera can also go well. But Rumstar should be able to come out on top.
Liverpool FC fan Burke's OUR MIGHTY MO can win the Betfred Silver Bowl Handicap (Heritage Handicap) (1.50pm). The three-year-old, who won a Nursery Handicap over seven furlongs at Haydock last October, has run reasonably well in two starts so far this season, finishing fourth at both Musselburgh and at the recent Boodles Chester May Festival. He wasn't beaten far on the Roodee and should still be improving. With those two runs to get him going again, Our Mighty Mo can book his ticket to Royal Ascot with victory in the prestigious mile handicap back at Haydock.
Charlie Appleby's DIAMOND RAIN, to be ridden by Liverpool FC fan William Buick, can make a winning return to action in the Listed Betfred 'Nifty 50' British EBF Hedge Of Oak Stakes (2.25pm). The four-year-old daughter of Shamardal won twice in four starts last season and although she disappointed when last of 12 in the Group Two Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot, she ran well enough to be fourth on her final start of the season in a similar Listed contest at Doncaster. She still remains open to improvement, particularly at this 1m2f trip. Many of Appleby's starters this season have hit the ground running and this looks an ideal place for Diamond Rain to get back on track.
Tim Easterby's CANDONOMORE can bring up a hat-trick of wins this season with victory in the opener, the Betfred Supports Jack Berry House Hell Nook Handicap (1.15pm). The four-year-old gelded son of Almanzor has already won twice over a mile at Wetherby and Leicester in the past month and he can score again.
Willie Haggas' MAELSTROM is another who has won both starts this season – at Yarmouth and over course and distance last month – and the three-year-old can also bring up a treble in the Betfred 'The Classic Bookmaker' Edge Green Handicap (4.10pm).
George Scott's CABALLO DE MAR saw his run of five victories come to an end in the Ladbrokes Chester Cup at the start of the month but he can return to winning ways in the CarFinance247 New Boston Handicap (GBBPlus Race) (4.45pm). The four-year-old ran a fine race to be second to East India Dock in the Roodee feature, but dropped back slightly in trip to two miles and in a less competitive contest, he can get back on the winning trail.
At Beverley the unbeaten ALI SHUFFLE can make it four in a row in the Hilary Needler Trophy EBF Fillies' Conditions Stakes (GBB Race) (2.10pm). Karl Burke's two-year-old filly scored over course and distance in April and followed up with a fine victory in the Lily Agnes EBF Conditions Stakes at Chester's May Festival. She can go in again to book a trip to Royal Ascot in the Group Two Queen Mary Stakes which Burke has won twice in the past three seasons with Dramatised (2022) and Leovanni last year.
Burke stable-mate and debutant NAVAL LIGHT can give him a juvenile double at Beverley in the bet365 Two Year Old Trophy EBF Conditions Stakes (2.45pm).
Others who can score at the Yorkshire track are the Richard Fahey-trained duo MY HARRISON GEORGE and LIFE ON THE ROCKS in the Never Ordinary At bet365 Handicap (3.20pm) and the Best Odds Guaranteed At bet365 Handicap (4.25pm) respectively; and David Loughnane's course and distance winner BILLYB in the bet365 Handicap (3.55pm).
At Goodwood Ralph Beckett's unbeaten AMILOC can land a fourth career win stepped up to an extended 1m3f for the first time in the Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Cocked Hat Stakes (2.05pm).
The once-raced Beckett stable-mate PERFECT YOUR CRAFT – who won at Salisbury over a mile last October – can also improve for the step up in trip to take the Listed BetGoodwin Height Of Fashion Stakes (Fillies') (3.15pm).
Charlie Hills' BOB MALI can take the opener, the BetGoodwin Harroways Handicap (1.30pm). While others who can score at Goodwood are Archie Watson's debutant BLUE NGURU in the James Reid 60th Birthday EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes (GBB Race) (2.35pm); stable-mate CARADOS in the finale, the Goodwood Horseracing Club Membership Handicap (4.55pm); and the John and Thady Gosden-trained recent Newmarket runner-up FRENCH MASTER in the BetGoodwin Download The App Handicap (GBBPlus Race) (3.45pm).
In Ireland at the Curragh Aidan O'Brien's OFFICER can win the Group One Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas (No Geldings) (3.40pm), while stable-mate – Australian import STORM BOY – can also score in the Group Two Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes (3.05pm).

THREE Liverpool stars told they will be leaving

Liverpool are gearing up for a productive transfer window. They have already secured the signing of Dutch international Jeremie Frimpong - who joins from Bayer Leverkusen. Plans are in place for Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz too - with the Reds hoping to tie up those deals quickly. Adding just those three players will cost the club in the region of £200m - and that's before we consider a new centre-forward or midfielder. Advertisement It's clear that Liverpool need sales in order to finances a rebuild and Trent Alexander-Arnold and Caoimhin Kelleher have already left. But more outgoings will be required if a high-quality squad is to be assembled. There are plenty of players considered expendable - despite the club having just won the Premier League title. We could see Kostas Tsimikas, Joe Gomez, Jarell Quansah, Harvey Elliott, Federico Chiesa, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez all potentially leave. And fringe players aren't immune either. Bids could well be heard for Ben Doak - the 19-year-old Scotland international winger who was on loan at Middlesbrough last season. But Arne Slot might also opt to chop some of the other young talents he had in his first-team squad last season. Danns, Morton and McConnell to leave Liverpool have got a productive academy pipeline - and there are indications that they are ready to clear the decks. That move will make way for the next generation of first-team hopefuls as well as add cash to the club's transfer kitty. Advertisement And TBR Football's Graeme Bailey claims Jayden Danns, Tyler Morton and James McConnell will be leaving the club this summer. 'I know that Liverpool are ready to bring a batch through that can be like Arne's boys,' Bailey said. 'I've been told that they're expecting a new stream of youth talent as it were. 'The likes of Danns, Morton and McConnell are a few of them who are going to be moving on. 'So Liverpool are making room for a new batch of youngsters. I think Liverpool are excited about what's coming. 'I know there's a right-back at Liverpool who they really like.'

Liverpool deal moves closer as forward offered at OUTRAGEOUS discount

Liverpool's transfer focus is currently on Florian Wirtz. The club are locked in negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen over the Germany playmaker. Leverkusen are seeking £126m for Wirtz, but Liverpool's efforts are currently some way short of that total. Recent reports suggest the Reds are willing to pay £100m up front and another £13m for the No10 in add-ons, and the fee remains a sticking point. Once Wirtz and Kerkez are safely on board, Liverpool could well move for other targets. The club want a No9 and given the number of alterations expected on the wings we could see a wide man arrive in time. Luis Diaz, Ben Doak and Federico Chiesa could all LEAVE in the summer window, opening a gap for a winger to arrive. Kubo wants to leave Real Sociedad And according to the latest reports, one long-term Liverpool target is about to have his asking price slashed. Advertisement Takefusa Kubo has been on the Reds' radar over several windows. Indeed last summer it was reported that the club were preparing to trigger the forward's €60m Real Sociedad release clause. No deal came to fruition, however, with the 24-year-old and his club going on to have an indifferent season. Imanol Alguacil left his position as head coach, sparking reports that Kubo was among the players to hand in a transfer request. Then it was suggested that the Japan international was of interest to both Liverpool and Arsenal but neither side were prepared to meet his €60m asking price. But now Florian Plettenberg is reporting that Kubo could be available for an OUTRAGEOUS discount in the summer market - and that could bring Liverpool back to the table. Kubo offered at HUGE discount 'Takefusa Kubo is one to watch in the summer transfer window, as he's currently leaning towards a move to the Premier League,' the German transfer reporter stated on X. Advertisement 'The 24y/o winger has already received multiple enquiries. Price valuation: €30-40m. He remains under contract at Real Sociedad until 2029. 7G/4A.' A price of €60m was too rich for Richard Hughes but if Kubo can be acquired for half that, then it would represent strong business. The left-footed right-winger only scored five goals in LaLiga last season but has very good underlying numbers on FOTMOB for chances created, successful dribbles and touches in the opposition box. He is also a willing worker off the ball, earning high marks in the duels won, interceptions, recoveries and possessions won in the final third categories. Kubo is also among the most-fouled players in the Spanish top flight - winning 73 fouls across the season.

Report: Liverpool weigh £30m sale as Brentford and others show interest

Ben Doak and Liverpool's £30m Opportunity: Smart Business or Short-Sighted Sale? Transfer Turbulence Around Young Talent Liverpool's summer activity has been relentless, with deals flowing in and out of the club in rapid succession. The latest transfer spotlight, however, is fixed on 19-year-old Ben Doak, a name that barely registered with the casual fan last summer but now finds himself a £30m-rated target for a trio of Premier League clubs. Advertisement Per the Hounslow Herald, Brentford are keen to add Doak to a growing collection of ex-Liverpool talent, having already secured the signatures of Caoimhin Kelleher, Sepp van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho over the past two summers. But they're not alone. Crystal Palace and Brighton have reportedly entered the fray, a development that significantly strengthens Liverpool's hand. Sale May Fund Big-Name Targets Liverpool's motivation is clear. While they've already welcomed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and bid farewell to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kelleher, bigger targets are on the radar. Chief among them is Florian Wirtz. Liverpool to recoup funds to help fund Wirtz and more. With the club still engaged in talks over Milos Kerkez and potentially a striker, Doak's sale could serve a broader strategic purpose. His potential may be considerable, but in a summer of reshaping, even promising youth might be considered expendable to fund marquee arrivals. Market Value and Timing Work in Liverpool's Favour Doak's value, and the timing of this interest, place Liverpool in an advantageous position. Ipswich Town had tried in January, but the Reds didn't want to sell. The mood seems to have shifted, and rightly so. The competition between Brentford, Brighton and Crystal Palace all but guarantees a fee close to the full £30m. Photo IMAGO Given that Doak's 2024/25 campaign was hampered by injury after a strong loan stint at Middlesbrough, it's a bold valuation—but not unrealistic. There's enough performance data, promise and Premier League readiness to justify it, particularly in a summer when even mid-table clubs have serious money to spend. Development Versus Immediate Value Selling Doak would be another sign that Liverpool are prioritising short-term gains and proven quality over longer-term squad depth and player development. That may be a calculated risk worth taking, but it will only pay off if their reinvestments—particularly in the Wirtz deal—yield immediate returns. Advertisement It's a recurring theme under Fenway Sports Group: buy low, develop smart, and sell high. In this case, it might be more about selling smart and buying elite. Our View – Anfield Index Analysis There's no doubt Ben Doak has something about him. Pacey, direct, and fearless—he looks every inch a player suited to Arne Slot's dynamic football. His performances at Middlesbrough hinted at serious potential, and despite injury setbacks, most Liverpool fans would have liked to see him get a proper run in the first team before decisions are made. That said, £30m is no small change for a player who's still largely unproven at Premier League level. If that money helps secure someone like Florian Wirtz, a generational talent who could redefine Liverpool's attacking play, then it becomes more palatable. But it always stings to see homegrown or carefully scouted youth sold on just before they might explode. Advertisement Brentford, Brighton and Palace are all clubs with smart recruitment and solid coaching. If any of them land Doak, he'll probably thrive. The worry then is hindsight. If he becomes a star elsewhere, fans will question why we didn't show more patience. Still, given the bigger picture and financial pragmatism required to stay competitive in the modern game, this looks like a sale Liverpool can afford to make—but only if they get the rest of their summer business absolutely right.
