Convoy of activists on way to Gaza to demand an end to Israeli hostilities
More than 1,000 grassroots activists have begun a 2,400km overland journey across North Africa to
Gaza
to demand an end to
Israel's war
and deliver humanitarian aid to the besieged enclave.
The 112-vehicle convoy, which left Tunis on Monday, is expected to swell as it travels through Libya and Egypt.
Participants say they have been forced to act as their governments have failed to end the 20-month war between Israel and Hamas.
Organisers said the convoy was not bringing aid into Gaza, but rather aimed at carrying out a 'symbolic act' by breaking the blockade on the territory.

'This is a message to the people of Gaza: You are not alone,' said Sheikh Yahya Sari of the Algerian Association of Muslim Scholars. 'We share your pain, and this is a form of public pressure against the occupier in the face of international failure to stop the massacres.'
Doctors, lawyers, journalists, diplomats, trade unionists and politicians from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Mauritania have signed up for the Maghreb Caravan of Steadfastness, which has been organised by the non-profit Co-ordination for Joint Action for Palestine in Tunisia group and several other civil rights organisations.
The convoy is being seen as historic in the Maghreb, the western part of the Arab world, which has largely distanced itself from events in Palestine.
Morocco normalised relations with Israel in 2000, along with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain in the Mashreq, the eastern Arab world.
'This initiative is aimed [at] all free people of the world to stand against occupation and genocide,' convoy spokesman Wael Naouar told the Tunisian news agency.
'Breaking the blockade is not just about delivering aid. It's also about evacuating the wounded so they can receive medical treatment outside the occupied territories.'
The organisers said the convoy's launch 'comes at a time when UN reports indicate the people of Gaza are facing the worst humanitarian disaster in modern times [as] 100 per cent of the Strip's population is food insecure, while more than half of Gaza's population is now homeless after their homes were destroyed.'
The caravan will pause in Cairo on Thursday to join forces with the Global March to Gaza, which is being staged by activists from 32 countries, before travelling on Friday to the town of Arish in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.
From there, participants will walk the remaining 50km, arriving on Sunday in Rafah, the city straddling the border between Egypt and Gaza.
There, diplomats and rights activists are expected to try to negotiate access to Gaza.
Conditions in Gaza have worsened dramatically since the Hamas-led attack on Israel in October 2023.
Israel recently barred the entry of humanitarian aid into the territory for 80 days, bringing the population to the brink of famine, according to international aid organisations. It has since supported an aid delivery system that has been marred by violence and shunned by humanitarian groups.

I'm no Greta Thunberg fan, but dismissing the Madleen as a ‘publicity stunt' is brain-dead
There is little to like about Greta Thunberg : the ghoulish climate doomerism, the omni-cause activism, the fervour she inspires in the worst corners of the liberal media (a cover star of Vogue!), the enviable self-assurance. Through a carefully managed coalition of an exploitative establishment and her parents, Thunberg has been elevated to a position beyond her rhetorical means. And we are left with a messianic adolescent of her elders' creation who says cheering things such as 'the world is getting more grim by the day' and that it is facing 'a sixth mass extinction' event. Not great. But I feel uncharacteristically compelled to resist all of my instincts and defend her anyway. Over the past seven days Thunberg and a cohort of pro-Palestine activists have sailed across the Mediterranean on the Madleen with a small amount of humanitarian aid, attempting to break the blockade of Gaza . On Monday morning the predictable happened: Israeli soldiers boarded the boat , arrested the crew – including Thunberg, took them to Israeli ports and repatriated them. Thunberg was put on an aircraft to her native Sweden, unharmed. A small run down of the responses to the operation: it is a 'theatre of self-satisfied spectacle'; a 'photogenic tableau for western media'; a 'pathetic, self-serving stunt' (or more prosaically just a 'publicity stunt'); she is sailing into 'another photo-opportunity' on a 'doomed ship of moral superiority'. I can almost forgive Thunberg for her own histrionics – she is only 22. But from the adult-populated press, I cannot help but think this all has a touch of the swivel-eyed. These are opinions so devotionally bad-faith it is hard to imagine any normal person holding them. 'Publicity stunt' is not a value judgment, it's a neutral description of a tactic There is a broad, cosmic defence to make for Thunberg: at least she cares; it's better to want to improve the world, no matter how inelegantly she goes about it; so what if the diagnosis is wrong, she's trying; it's cool to disregard a slate of critical observers, especially at that age; and burdened by such crippling existential angst about the direction of the universe, doesn't it make sense for her to spend her life attempting to reroute it? She is just a turbocharged romantic activist, curiously immune from self-limiting beliefs. Hold on, I wish I was immune from self-limiting beliefs. READ MORE Yes, tick to all of the above, I suppose. But the real case for the defence is narrower and more convincing. On the long list of criticisms leveraged at Thunberg and the Madleen's attempt to bring aid to Gaza, that it should be dismissed as a mere 'publicity stunt' or 'vanity project' is an argument so illiterate it is functionally brain-dead. Tell me, please, exactly what is activism other than publicity stunts? I don't much like the radical environment pressure group Just Stop Oil's cause, and even less their tactics. (Chalk this up to some ineffable faith I hold in the sanctity of art, or just a general latent fogeyishness.) But when two young women were sentenced for throwing soup on Vincent Van Gogh's Sunflowers I understood, shockingly – as I am sure most did, too – that 'publicity stunt' was the point. What else do these women believe they were trying to achieve? Attention is the motivating force, and a well-organised group can convert that attention into material progress. 'Publicity stunt' is not a value judgment, it's a neutral description of a tactic. And that goes for Thunberg too. Whatever for the validity of the cause, criticism is more effective when it is fair. And the most fair rendering of the Madleen 'publicity stunt' is this: a group of pro-Palestine humanitarian activists – well aware they would not be granted access to Gaza, probably also assuming that no army would be likely to physically harm them – made a symbolic attempt to deliver food to a currently starving Gaza. Symbolic, attention-grabbing, social-media literate: good protest, actually! Will make a great blueprint for activists of the future. Far less risible than the soup-chuckers, too. It would be fun, nonetheless, to send some of these particularly cantankerous journalists back through the ages to deploy their 'publicity stunt' test: that Rubicon crossing? It's not even a big river, that's just Caesar and his attention-seeking legions. Proclaiming the Irish Republic outside the GPO before these rebels have even won the insurrection? Vain, premature, 'a theatre of self-satisfied spectacle' perhaps. And what is Martin Luther King doing in Washington anyway? I suspect – and this will not be a groundbreaking revelation – that the 'publicity stunt' allegation is a rhetorical proxy for something else. Now, for those who don't want to declare themselves for or against a particular cause (too risky, could alienate people, their judgment could be proven wrong in time) there is a handy get-out. Call the activists vain and media-obsessed, ineffective and attention-seekers. Great: criticism leveraged – 1, sides picked – 0. Say what you like about Thunberg, but she would never be such a coward.

Two Gaza aid activists held in solitary confinement by Israel
The NGO representing most of the activists detained aboard a Gaza-bound aid boat that was intercepted by Israeli forces said that two of the campaigners had been placed in solitary confinement in Israel. "Israeli authorities transferred two of the volunteers - the Brazilian volunteer Thiago Avila and the French-Palestinian European Parliament member Rima Hassan - to separate prison facilities, away from the others, and placed them in solitary confinement," Israeli human rights group Adalah said in a statement. When asked for comment, Israel's prison authority referred AFP to the foreign ministry, which claimed it was checking the reports. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition said in a statement on Instagram that Mr Avila is "on his third day of hunger and water strike denouncing Israel's impunity". The group, who organised the boat's attempt to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza, said Adalah's lawyer informed them that Israeli authorities have threatened to put Mr Avila in a "dark, small and breathless and contactless cell" for seven days. It also accused Israel of holding the activists as hostages. Activists 'capitalising' on conflict for attention - France PM Meanwhile, France's Prime Minister François Bayrou accused the French activists of capitalising on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for political attention. Ms Hassan is an MEP from the France Unbowed (LFI) party and is among four French activists still detained in Israel. Israeli forces intercepted the Madleen and its 12 crew members in international waters off the besieged Palestinian territory on Monday. Another four, who are not French, were also taken into custody. The remaining four, including two French citizens and Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg, agreed to be deported immediately after being banned from Israel for 100 years. LFI leader in parliament Mathilde Panot accused the prime minister of failing to condemn Israel's actions. "These activists obtained the effect they wanted, but it's a form of instrumentalisation to which we should not lend ourselves," Mr Bayrou responded in the National Assembly. It's "through diplomatic action, and efforts to bring together several states to pressure the Israeli government, that we can obtain the only possible solution" to the conflict, he added. France and Saudi Arabia are co-hosting a UN meeting later this month in New York on steps towards recognising a Palestinian state and reaching a so-called two-state solution to the conflict. France's Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot told parliament the priority in Gaza should be "an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages held by Hamas, as well as immediate, unimpeded and massive humanitarian aid access to abridge the suffering of civilian populations". "In no way whatsoever do the gesticulations of Ms Rima Hassan, her instrumentalisation of the suffering of Gazans, help to achieve these goals," he added. He said the French consul had visited all four French activists in Israeli detention. The Israeli ambassador in Paris earlier said the Israeli authorities aimed to put them onto a plane back home "as soon as possible". Israel is facing mounting pressure to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza, whose entire population the United Nations has warned is at risk of famine.

‘Palestinian lives being weighed against bond markets,' Dáil hears in debate over Israeli bonds
Taoiseach Micheál Martin has been accused of 'speaking the truth in order to bury it' by acknowledging genocide in Gaza but failing to prevent the Central Bank's role in the sale of Israeli war bonds. In a Dáil debate calling for an end for the bank's involvement in the sale of the bonds, Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon said the Israeli bonds prospectus advertisement says ''stand with Israel. Israel is at war.' These bonds bankroll the bombs, the starvation, the extermination,' he said. He said that while the Government states that genocide is happening, 'Ireland must do nothing that might affect our GDP, that might affect our relationship with the US. This is what it comes down to - Palestinian lives being weighed against bond markets and bilateral trade flows'. What is happening 'by virtue of the fact that we're refusing to meet our obligations for the prevention of genocide is collusion. And what the Taoiseach is doing is speaking the truth only in order to bury it'. READ MORE Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe insisted the Government 'is working relentlessly with partners and with others to affect the type of change that Israel may not be able to ignore'. He said 'our efforts are making a difference, but I accept that they need to deliver more'. Ireland's approach to the unfolding tragedy is one of 'principled conviction, but also a recognition of the realities that we face, that we have to build up a diplomatic coalition to achieve more. 'We also have to be conscious of laws that are already in place,' he said as he introduced a countermotion. He said that, similar to the Sinn Féin motion, the Social Democrats proposal 'would be unworkable, will contravene EU law and would not achieve its intended objective'. The Social Democrats introduced the motion two weeks after Sinn Féin introduced legislation which was voted down , to stop the Central Bank's involvement in the sale of Israeli bonds. Party deputy leader Cian O'Callaghan said 'men, women, and children are being starved to death'. 'Mothers have been forced to try and boil grass to feed their children and starvation is being used as a weapon of war against innocent people. 'The Governor of the Central Bank says that the Central Bank cannot act on this, that it's beyond their competency to decide whether or not genocide is taking place.' But he said in January 2024 'the International Court of Justice confirmed the plausibility of the charges of genocide taken against Israel by South Africa'. The Government recognised that 'what's happening in Gaza is genocide' but 'it is not simply enough to say that what is happening is genocide'. The Government 'must do everything you can to stop and prevent genocide in Gaza.' The Israeli government 'is selling these bonds to help finance the genocide. And the Irish Central Bank is facilitating the sale of those bonds in Europe. That is a direct link between these bonds and the genocide that is taking place and this has to stop.' Sinn Féin finance spokesman Pearse Doherty described the Government's response as 'shameful' and that they would be 'on the wrong side of history' as 'genocide is staring us in the face'. People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy asked 'is your argument seriously that a regulation on financial prospectuses should override the UN Convention on the prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide'. Minister of State Robert Troy said measures have to be negotiated and agreed internationally 'at EU and UN level for them to have real impact and credibility'. He added that 'any attempt to act unilaterally could undermine the unified approach that we're beginning to see form at EU level. We cannot seek to uphold international law by breaking EU law.'
