ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) — Elizabeth City State University student Sara Hill is not only a student-athlete, but is also in the Army Reserves.
After finishing up homework ahead of finals, she went to join her friends at ECSU's final night of 'Viking Fest,' but the fun evening quickly turned frightening though when gunshots started flying through the crowd after midnight Sunday.
One killed, at least 5 injured, during ECSU Viking Fest event
'He shot off five or six semi's and then went full auto in the crowd,' she said. 'I'm not even kidding, like I was probably maybe 10 feet from him.'
Bullets were flying, some people were running, others dropped to the ground and froze. Hill said she saw a girl fall near the shooter.
'I just remember that girl falling,' Hill said. 'I remember dropping to a knee and trying to get her up, we were trying to get her up. She added the shooter saw the fall happen.
'Then he looks at the both of us and starts walking towards us and I literally looked at him. I saw the muzzle and I was like, 'Oh God, girl we gotta go.'
After helping several classmates up, Hill felt a sharp pain in her hip after escaping the shooters line of sight.
'I really, genuinely, did not realize I was shot,' she said. 'I kept pulling my hand up and it was just covered in blood.'
Over the next few hours, Hill learned she wasn't the only student that was shot.
She said two football players who survived the shooting and have not been identified, were shot as well.
Another person who wasn't a student was identified by his brotherhood Groove Phi Groove as 24-year-old Isaiah Caldwell. They said he died.
'He was so nice … so friendly,' said Hill about their brief encounter.
She said the attack did not seem targeted towards anyone in particular because of the way the suspect was shooting. Hill said the shooter was spraying bullets in all directions.
She and other students 10 On Your Side spoke with said they also don't believe the shooter was a student.
'We just know it wasn't possible,' Hill said. 'I'm telling you, the students, we all love each other so much.'
No suspect information has been released as of Monday evening.
No arrests have been made. If you or someone you know may have information, contact the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

Mother of missing Navy sailor in Norfolk speaks out as investigation continues

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The investigation into missing Culinary Specialist Seaman Angelina Resendiz out of Naval Station Norfolk is still ongoing. Resendiz was initially reported missing on May 29, and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) states her disappearance from the Virginia naval station poses a credible threat to their health and safety. According to the Navy, Resendiz was last seen in her barracks at Naval Station Norfolk around 10 a.m. Nexstar's WAVY spoke with Resendiz's mother, Esmerelda Castle, who says she knew something was wrong when her daughter stopped reaching out to family members — something Resendiz was known to do every day. 'She talks to somebody every day,' Castle said. 'Her and my sister have a 400-day streak on Snapchat, and it all stopped on Thursday. She doesn't miss work.' Castle contacted the Navy and flew all the way to Hampton Roads, Virginia, from Texas to look for Resendiz, whom she describes as kind and compassionate. 'She's a very kind person. She's loving,' Castle said. 'She sees someone down, she's compassionate and encouraging and uplifting, and it's just natural for her. You see her and she's always smiling.' Esmerelda Castle shared the below photos of her daughter with WAVY. Castle said the last person who was seen with her daughter showed up to work on Monday, while Resendiz did not. 'I got here Thursday, and [investigators] still couldn't tell me anything,' Castle said. WAVY reached out to NCIS and received the following statement: 'NCIS urges anyone with information regarding her whereabouts to contact NCIS at 877-579-3648 or using the NCIS Tips app. Tips may be reported anonymously.'

Virginia Beach introduces program to address school-related threats

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The City of Virginia Beach recently launched a new program in order to address school-related threats. The new program, called the School Threat Offense Program (STOP), was introduced by the Virginia Beach Court Services Unit and the Virginia Beach Police Department and consists of a five-week educational course for youth adjudicated on school-related threats. According to a release, each week of the program will focus on different aspects of accountability, behavioral awareness and community safety, including applicable laws and rules, bullying prevention and consequences of harmful actions. During the program, School Resource Officers will speak with both parents and students about different support strategies, accessing school-based resources and the impact school threats on the larger community. Parents of the first graduates of the program, which concluded on May 21, 2025, said they have noticed considerable changes in their children, such as increased emotional regulation, accountability and academic progress. 'We have long needed a program like STOP,' VBPD Lt. Kevin Lokey said. 'Education, engagement and empowerment from the program produce a positive turnaround for these kids and their families. STOP is designed to reduce juvenile incarceration while still correcting behaviors and helping youths learn from their mistakes.' For more information on the program, click here.
