Court grants bail to woman charged in UiTM students' death

KUALA TERENGGANU: The High Court today granted RM40,000 bail with two sureties to a woman charged with murdering three Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Dungun students in a road crash on Oct 9 last year. In delivering his decision, Judge Datuk Hassan Abdul Ghani found the defence's argument that the collision was an unintentional road accident and that the accused, Norizan Ismail, 50, had also skidded into a drain, to be reasonable. 'Just like a plane crash, you wouldn't assume the pilot flew the plane intending to kill people. Perhaps the same can be said of Norizan,' he said. The court also imposed the following bail conditions: the accused must report to the Dungun police station once every two months; she is prohibited from operating any vehicle, including cars, motorcycles, or bicycles; and her husband or bailor must ensure she has no access to any vehicle keys. Additional conditions include that the accused may only leave her home when accompanied by her husband, must continue receiving hospital treatment, and is prohibited from contacting or interfering with any witnesses until the trial concludes. If the accused breaches any of the conditions, the bail will be automatically revoked and the bail sum forfeited. Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Mohd Khairuddin Idris proposed bail at RM30,000 with two sureties but urged the court to deny bail altogether, citing the potential risk of further offences. In response to a query from the judge, defence counsel Mohd Shahir Mat Jusoh informed the court that Norizan had a scheduled hospital appointment in Kuala Lumpur and was also undergoing alternative treatment. On Oct 15 last year, Norizan was charged with three counts of murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code in connection with the deaths of UiTM Dungun students Muhammad Akmal Md Tukirim, 25; Ku Adib Aizad Ku Azmi, 20; and Khairil Anuar Jamaluddin, 20. Subsequently, the court ordered Norizan to be sent to Hospital Permai for psychiatric evaluation, which found her fit to stand trial. Norizan is also facing a charge under Section 307(1) of the Penal Code at the Kuala Terengganu Sessions Court for attempted murder involving another UiTM student who sustained injuries in the same crash.

Anwar: Reading decline threatens democracy and public discourse

KUALA LUMPUR: The declining interest in reading poses serious consequences for journalism, education, public knowledge, and democracy, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said librarians now carry the vital task of not just preserving knowledge but revitalising libraries as vibrant community centres. "The challenge is to revive a reading culture that we've lost," he said in his keynote address at the 19th Congress of Southeast Asian Librarians (Consal) General Conference and Meeting. Anwar recalled referencing The Closing of the American Mind by Allan Bloom, a book from the early 1980s which warned of the erosion of culture, tradition, and intellectual curiosity. "Today, on social media, people read two sentences and draw conclusions. Influencers say a few words and come to a judgment," he said. He lamented the decline in the culture of creativity and critical thinking—of seeking truth and understanding through a strong intellectual tradition—saying this trend has worsened since the 1980s. "Librarians, when you give a book, it's not enough just to give a book. You should tell the reader to open page 43 and please read that paragraph and make it so exciting that they'll want to continue to page 44," he said. Otherwise, he warned, the consequences would be profound: "Look at the rancorous, often hateful debates today—contentious, shallow, driven by populism and ignorance." He said libraries and librarians now have the heavy responsibility of countering this trend. Anwar added that while libraries must embrace digitalisation and artificial intelligence (AI), their core duty remains to spark a love of reading among the young. "Inculcating reading habits is a collective effort. Without it, there's no space to test ideas, compare experiences, or strengthen understanding to navigate these shifting times," he said. Without reading, he added, young minds risk becoming "captive"—only able to imagine or admire Western civilisations while remaining unaware of Southeast Asia's rich heritage, such as Angkor Wat and the Melaka Sultanate. Meanwhile, Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said Malaysia must ensure no one is excluded in building a knowledge-based society. "In many rural and remote areas across Southeast Asia, access to libraries is still limited. We must prioritise community libraries, mobile services, and digital kiosks to reach the underserved," he said. He called for libraries to actively promote linguistic inclusion by offering materials in minority languages and supporting efforts to document and preserve indigenous literature and oral traditions. He also stressed the importance of making libraries fully accessible to persons with disabilities. "Accessibility must be integral to library design, not an afterthought—physically and digitally," he said, adding that this includes ramps, accessible toilets, and materials in braille, large print, audiobooks, and screen-reader-friendly formats. "Equally important is ensuring library staff are trained to serve persons with disabilities with dignity, knowledge, and care," he said.

Anwar: Malaysians in Iran not brought home yet

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysians currently in Iran have not yet been repatriated. "Not yet," Anwar said briefly when asked by reporters about the status of Malaysians in the country. He was speaking after officiating the Sasana Symposium 2025 and launching the Digital Asset Innovation Hub at Bank Negara. On June 13, Israel launched strikes targeting Iran's nuclear and military infrastructure, triggering a spike in global oil prices. Anwar yesterday acknowledged concerns that the escalating conflict could affect Malaysia's trade. However, he noted that some trade channels remain open, despite growing unease among companies. Anwar said he had discussed the situation with Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) secretary-general Haitham Al Ghais, as well as key industry players including TotalEnergies, Eni, Aramco and others, in addition to Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas).
