South Carolina State standout forward and All MEAC performer Drayton Jones has entered the transfer portal and will continue his collegiate basketball career at Butler University. Jones shared the news with the Athletic on Tuesday and was reported on social media.
Jones, a 6-foot-11 sophomore from Houston, Texas, was a dominant presence for the Bulldogs during the 2024–25 season. He averaged 12.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game while shooting 56.4% from the field. Known for his physicality and touch around the basket, Jones quickly emerged as one of the top frontcourt players in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
The South Carolina State Bulldogs concluded the 2024–25 men's basketball season with a 20–13 overall record and an 11–3 mark in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play, earning a share of the MEAC regular-season title. Under third-year head coach Erik Martin, the Bulldogs demonstrated significant improvement, highlighted by a seven-game winning streak to close the regular season.
In the MEAC tournament, South Carolina State secured victories over Coppin State and North Carolina Central before narrowly falling to top-seeded Norfolk State in the championship game. The team's offensive prowess was evident, averaging nearly 80 points per game, ranking 49th nationally.
His most memorable performance came in December when he erupted for 34 points, eight rebounds and six blocks in a win over Charleston Southern. Jones was later named HBCU National Player of the Week by BOXTOROW in early March after leading S.C. State to back-to-back conference wins, including a crucial upset over then-MEAC leader Norfolk State.
Jones becomes the latest Bulldog to move to a high-major program via the transfer portal, highlighting the talent and development coming out of Orangeburg. He is expected to provide Butler with immediate help in the frontcourt as the Big East program looks to build momentum heading into next season.

Giants Flop Daniel Jones Could Steal Starting Job Amid Bad News for Colts' Anthony Richardson

Giants Flop Daniel Jones Could Steal Starting Job Amid Bad News for Colts' Anthony Richardson originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is chasing medical opinions. Advertisement And that might leave Daniel Jones chasing the starting job. Richardson, has an AC joint issue in his throwing shoulder and so he is traveling to Los Angeles for a second opinion as he meets with renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache. A top-five pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Richardson is among the most physically gifted players on the planet. But a shoulder injury cut his rookie year short, and he didn't improve as a thrower in his second season. And now he's hurt. Enter Daniel Jones. The Colts signed Jones as insurance. ... or maybe something more. And now that Richardson has been scratched from minicamp. The former New York Giants quarterback Jones could "fall upward'' and win the Colts No. 1 job. Advertisement They did give Jones $14 million for the year, a hefty sum for a backup. And he was once New York's first-round pick and top QB. Did Daniel Jones flop badly in the Big Apple? That's the view of many critics ... though he was - just that one time - a playoff QB and a playoff winner, too, which is how he earned his one major payday in the NFL. Can he now plow forward and give the maybe-contending Colts (who play in the awful AFC South) stability at the game's most important position in a way that Richardson has not? As Indy waits and worries about Richardson's fate? That might be the Jones-related view, too. Report: Colts' QB Daniel Jones 'taking advantage' of reps during minicamp

Report: Colts' QB Daniel Jones 'taking advantage' of reps during minicamp Indianapolis Colts' QB Daniel Jones is reportedly capitalizing on the additional reps he is getting in minicamp. Through the first two days of minicamp practices for the Indianapolis Colts, quarterback Daniel Jones has taken advantage of the additional opportunities that have come his way, according to ESPN's Stephen Holder. "Quarterback Daniel Jones is taking advantage of Anthony Richardson Sr.'s absence during the Colts' three-day camp, making several notable throws Wednesday to get the ball to his ample cast of offensive playmakers," wrote Holder. The starting quarterback reps throughout offseason programs and into training camp were supposed to be split between Jones and Anthony Richardson. Unfortunately, Richardson is sidelined this week after aggravating his shoulder, the same one that he injured during the 2023 season. Shane Steichen confirmed on Tuesday that Richardson did get another opinion on his shoulder with Neal ElAttrache, who was the surgeon who performed the original surgery. There is no specific timeline for Richardson's return, but Steichen has said they hope to have him back for training camp. That means that Jones is getting "a lot of the reps going forward," as Steichen put it. For a quarterback who is still learning a new system, the additional reps that he's now getting are presumably helping to expedite that learning process that comes with being in a different scheme. 'He's been great. … Acclimating to the offense, learning it, the system. Obviously, a smart guy, understands it, he's picked it up,' Steichen said of Jones, via the Indy Star. 'He's a veteran guy that comes in early, late nights, does all the right things.' There isn't a timetable that Steichen has for when he wants to name the starting quarterback for Week 1. Ultimatley, he just wants to find the most consistent performer. Regardless of how Jones performs during these three days of minicamp, it isn't going to decide whether he's the starter to begin the season or not. However, it does give him the upper hand in that competition. This isn't to say that Richardson still can't go out and win the job, but with missing most of OTAs, all of minicamp, and need a ramp up period whenever he does return to the practice field, time won't be on this side, and he'll have to make up ground quickly.

HBCU Powerhouse Eyes Division I Jump

HBCU Powerhouse Eyes Division I Jump originally appeared on Athlon Sports. On any given Saturday at Abbott Memorial Alumni Stadium, the roar of the crowd, the beat of the marching band, and the echo of history pulse through the Alabama air. But behind the scenes, a question looms louder than any drumline: Is Tuskegee University ready to make the leap to NCAA Division I? Advertisement It's not just speculation. It's a conversation rooted in data, infrastructure, and a growing resume of athletic excellence. In the 2024–25 academic year alone, Tuskegee competed for seven conference titles, winning three and finishing runner-up in four. That kind of consistency isn't just impressive. It's the blueprint for elevation. 'That's a lot of championships,' said Tuskegee Athletic Director Reginald Ruffin, who has become the face of both tradition and transformation within the program. Tuskegee isn't just winning. It's evolving. Under Ruffin's leadership, and with the support of President Dr. Mark Brown the university has made full athletic funding a priority, ensuring that sports are not only maintained but nurtured. Facility upgrades are underway, alumni support is strengthening, and the campus is undergoing revitalization that mirrors the ambition taking root in its athletic department. There are currently 23 Division I HBCUs across the nation. A move up for Tuskegee would mean joining a select group competing at the highest level. Joining programs in the SWAC, MEAC, and even independent Division I conferences. But it's not just about competition; it's about culture, community visibility, and access to greater financial and recruiting resources. Advertisement Still, the decision is not solely Ruffin's to make. 'It's going to be President Mark Brown… what he wants to see in the next three-year plan, his five-year plan…. what he sees in athletics,' Ruffin told HBCU Gameday. The NCAA mandates strict requirements for Division I membership, including minimum sports sponsorships, scholarship numbers, and financial commitments. Tuskegee's steady climb suggests that while it isn't quite there yet, it's not far behind. 'You gotta be supporting your sports,' Ruffin emphasized. 'We're grounded where we're planted, and we're going to do what we can to continue building the legacy of Tuskegee University.' Advertisement With the spotlight on HBCU athletics growing brighter, fueled by figures like Deion Sanders and media platforms amplifying Black college sports, Tuskegee's timing couldn't be more strategic. If the university plays its cards right, it could not only elevate its athletic brand but position itself as a flagship HBCU in the next generation of Division I athletics. So, will Tuskegee make the move? They're not rushing. But they are preparing. And if recent success is any indication, it's no longer a question of 'if', but 'when.'
