How to spend a weekend in Battersea, London
The experience The £1.5 billion renovation of Battersea Power Station has transformed this once-tired pocket of South London, and one of the four giant chimneys even houses an elevator that takes you up 109 metres – hence its name, Lift 109 (below). The experience starts with interactive displays detailing the history of the power station, before you enter the glass lift to experience a thrilling Charlie Bucket moment, shooting up towards the clouds (from £17, lift109.co.uk).
The culture fix In a handsome building that was once Battersea Town Hall you'll find a hub of dance, music and theatre. The Battersea Arts Centre has been open since 1974 but was nearly destroyed by fire a decade ago; the architecture cleverly marks this so you can see where the original bricks end and the new ones begin. Upcoming shows include singer-songwriter Tom Odell (bac.org.uk) and if that's not enough, The Clapham Grand nearby has a brilliant line-up of live comedy (claphamgrand.com).
The hotel Art'otel is the place to stay if you're visiting Battersea. Not only does it have wonderful views over the historic power station next door, but elements of that building's heritage were woven into the hotel's interior design by artist Jaime Hayon, whose works hang in the public areas and spacious bedrooms. Its crowning glory is the heated infinity pool, hot tub and bar on the rooftop, while 15th-floor Portuguese restaurant Joia is a worthy destination in itself (rooms from £259, artotellondonbattersea.com).
The market A 6am start might not sound appealing, but early birds will be rewarded with the New Covent Garden Flower Market (it could be worse, the florists have to arrive at 4am). Tracing its roots back to the 17th century, the market is now in the newly revitalised Nine Elms district, where a huge warehouse is filled with flowers and plants from around the world. Breathe in the scents, listen to the market traders' banter and grab yourself a revitalising coffee from the Garden Café.
The restaurant Ploussard, on St John's Road, serves Parisian-inspired small plates (below) from a menu that changes biweekly, overseen by chef Matt Harris. It's all buzzy ambience and reasonable prices – our £38 set-lunch menu included beef tempura, dry aged trout and courgette with black garlic croustade (ploussardlondon.co.uk). For a brunch fix, bustling Parker Café (parkerlondon.co.uk) is the way to go, while Mahali Bakery's banana bread (£6, mahaliandco.com) is worth queuing for. Both are near Battersea Park.
The shop Back at the power station complex, The Battersea General Store initially looks like an upmarket convenience store but has been dubbed 'Britain's most expensive corner shop' for its staggering array of bougie produce. This includes 'the most insane wine selection', according to YOU's wine expert Charlotte Kristensen, featuring '£500+ bottles of wine alongside iconic labels, such as a Calvet Sancerre for £26.99.' The store made headlines for stocking a bottle of 1979 Petrus – priced £4,250.

TALK OF THE TOWN: William and Harry agree on one thing - Diana's ex-butler Paul Burrell needs to keep quiet
It's rare that Princes William and Harry see eye-to-eye about anything these days – but the estranged brothers may find common ground in their fury that their mother's ex-butler, Paul Burrell, is about to betray her confidence yet again. The former Palace servant is set to release a third 'intimate' memoir, promising to reveal stories he felt he couldn't share while the late Queen was still alive. But it risks evoking the ire of the Princes, as I'm told Burrell had promised he would stop exploiting his links to the late Princess Diana in a tense meeting with the brothers. Sources tell me all three held a secret summit at Kensington Palace in November 2017 to tackle the issue. 'It was awkward,' one insider said. 'William led the meeting and did all the talking, but Harry was silently seething that Burrell had betrayed their mother for financial gain time and time again. 'Eventually Paul agreed it was time to stop, and he hoped it would be a new chapter in his relationship with the boys.' Yet the man Diana once called her 'rock' seems to have reneged on that deal, with a new book The Royal Insider –with a picture of himself and Diana on the cover – due out in September. The Princes are now bracing themselves for what he might reveal as he vows to 'speak candidly about the tensions that simmered' during his time at the Palace – 'including the breakdown of Charles and Diana's marriage and his own complex relationship with Princes William and Harry'. Publishers Sphere add: 'It is only in the wake of the Queen's passing... Burrell feels he can finally tell his story in full.' Socialites head to Lola's Bute camp Lady Lola Bute last week hosted her London It Girl pals at her palatial home on Ibiza, including Romeo Beckham's recent ex Kim Turnbull and model Lila Moss. I hear Lady Lola, 25, has also been a consultant on a new TV show, Magnolia Parks, described as a London version of US hit Gossip Girl and based on a book about a 'beautiful, affluent, neurotic and self-involved' socialite. Wonder which of her inner circle she used for inspiration? Will Gibbs fall for his nibs? I suspect Perry Pearson won't be nursing a broken heart for too long after his split from Game Of Thrones actress Sophie Turner. I hear friends of the heir to the Cowdray estate in Sussex are trying to play Cupid and set him up with socialite and horse racing presenter Flora Gibbs. So has Perry asked her out on a date yet? 'No comment,' Flora tells me with a knowing smile while partying at the Boodles Boxing Ball last weekend. Watch this space… Brooklyn's ex gets cosy with polo ace Does Hana Cross, the ex-girlfriend of Brooklyn Beckham, have her sights set on another well-connected man? I hear the glamorous model was seen looking cosy and chatting animatedly last week with Polo England captain Tommy Severn at Polo in the Park in Fulham. Hana has become a bit of an amateur polo player herself, saddling up at the illustrious Guards Polo club in Windsor Great Park last month. Severn, who used to play polo with Prince Harry and formerly dated footballer Michael Owen's daughter Gemma, recently told me how he thought his royal pal's heavily lambasted Netflix documentary Polo was 'very weird'. I wonder if he's ever invited Hana for a chukka? Jackie goes posh Even Cruz Beckham admits he can sometimes get his Brazilian girlfriend Jackie Apostel, 30, and his mother Victoria confused due to their uncanny resemblance. So I wonder what the 20-year-old aspiring musician will make of Jackie sporting a fresh dark bob strikingly reminiscent of Posh's hairstyle from her 1990s Spice Girls heyday. Surely a case of when Two Become One! Superstar DJ Calvin Harris's plans to build a padel court at his £6 million Cotswolds property have been held up by (no pun intended) bats. The palatial pile is home to so many of the protected mammals that Harris must build an outbuilding to house them before any work on the court can begin. His ambitious plans for the house also include a reflection pool, hot yoga studio, sunken firepit, teepee and campfire.

EXCLUSIVE What, no waistcoats? After Gareth, the Southgates' get a new (and even more glamorous!) fashion influencer
Her father made waves on the internet with his pitch-side fashion choices – remember that waistcoat? Now Sir Gareth Southgate 's daughter is following in his footsteps as a hotshot fashion influencer. While he is a private man with no social media accounts, Mia Southgate is the opposite. The 24-year-old shows off her outfits to 25,000 followers and offers glimpses of the family's historic Swinsty Hall mansion in Timble, north Yorkshire. She has collaborated with brands such as Next, Caudalie, a skincare firm, and Citizens of Humanity, a jeans brand, and earns money through affiliate links from clothes and items she has worn – though how much is a mystery. Mia has also recruited her mother, Alison Southgate, 57, for help promote content. They feature in multiple videos, where the mother-daughter duo show off their outfits for different events and swap items from each other's wardrobes – Mia having her own wardrobe room. One video caption reads: 'Getting dressed with my bestie.' Miss Southgate was recruited in April by the agency Blush Talent Management, an arm of digital fashion blog Sheer Luxe. She has written blog posts about 'what a cool content creator has on her wish-list' and starred in videos for 600,000 Sheer Luxe followers. Mia also works for upmarket high-street brand Mint Velvet as a senior social media assistant where she and Lady Southgate regularly feature on its social media pages. Another recent deal was with luxury car maker Bentley, where she told followers she had been lent the car in return for a social media post. Her father is conspicuously absent from her media posts despite having a proven track record of boosting brands. His appearances in a fitted waistcoat at the 2018 World Cup caused a 35 per cent rise in sales of them at M&S.
