‘It's an awesome sport:' Women's flag football touches down for special event in Ottawa
U16 Mustangs are one of 62 girls' teams playing flag football at RA Centre on Sunday Jun. 8, 2025 (Josh Marano/ CTV News Ottawa) It's a special weekend for the National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA), hosting 62 girls' teams across four ages groups from around the region, in one location. From u12 teams to u20, over 600 players gathered at the RA Centre on Riverside Drive on the same day, usually dispersed across the city at several sites. The u16 South Ottawa Mustangs were among the teams playing and team president Dan Cooper says it's encouraging to see so many new players lacing up their cleats. 'On my teams especially, there's about 50 per cent new joiners this year which is fantastic,' Cooper said. 'That's people who otherwise would have nothing to do on a Saturday afternoon, be staying home looking for something. Instead, they're out here making friends, being healthy and learning a new sport.' The NCAFA says they have seen substantial growth in the game over the past three years, with over 200 total teams and 2,000 players across all genders and age groups. 'What encourages me to do this over and over is the feedback we get from the families at the end of the day, where they say that this is really well organized, it's fantastic,' Cooper added. 'Their kids have a great time, the smiles on their faces is really what we're doing. Win or lose, everyone's here to just improve as an athlete and make some friends and have some fun.' The sport is booming worldwide, making its Olympic introduction at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. 'We've this year adapted to the rule set that will be used in the Olympics, we're training the feeder system that will basically build Team Canada for that,' Cooper said. Sunday's event was the biggest girls' flag football event ever for the NCAFA, with teams from West Carleton and Carleton Place to Kemptville and Cumberland represented. Abbotsford Canucks Live: Game 6 win will advance Abby to Calder Cup final
The heat is on in Abbotsford. Article content Not only was the mercury expected to climb to 30 degrees Celsius in the Fraser Valley on Sunday, and actually feel like 34, the temperature inside the Abbotsford Centre will also rise. Article content Article content The Abbotsford Canucks hold a 3-2 series lead over the Texas Stars in the AHL best-of-seven Western Conference final and are a victory away from advancing to the Calder Cup championship against the Charlotte Checkers. Article content Game 6 before a raucous sold-out Abbotsford audience goes at 6 p.m., and if a seventh game is necessary, it's slated for Monday at 7 p.m. in the valley. The Canucks obviously don't want to be forced into a do-or-die showdown in Game 7 that could end their remarkable season, or shorten rest and prep time for the AHL final. Article content The Checkers are the Florida Panthers' affiliate and swept the Laval Rocket in the Eastern Conference final. They will host first two games of the AHL title series starting Friday in North Carolina, with the west winner getting Game 3, 4 and 5 home dates, before the series reverts back to Charlotte. Article content As for tonight, the Canucks will look for a hero. Article content Maybe somebody snaps a tight game in the third period, or becomes the latest overtime star. Four series games have been decided by one goal and three required overtime. Stars captain Curtis McKenzie of Golden, B.C., delivered the extra-session dagger Friday in Texas in a 2-1 triumph to force Game 6. Article content Article content Article content Article content You'd like to think Canucks winger Linus Karlsson is going to have a say in the Game 6 outcome. He has two goals in the series by getting to the net, has been a prime playmaker, and is tied for the post-season lead with nine goals. His 17 points are third among playoff scorers and he's second in shots with 49. Article content Maybe Arturs Silovs stretches his post-season shutout string to six. That would be fitting to equal the AHL record established by former Canucks goaltender Mika Noronen, who backstopped the Rochester Americans to the league crown in 2000. Article content Noronen played just four NHL games for Vancouver after being acquired at the 2006 NHL trade deadline. In his first appearance, he was bombed in a 5-0 loss to the Nashville Predators. Noronen then signed in Russia as opposed to serving as backup to workhorse Roberto Luongo.

Baseball icon Fergie Jenkins honoured by hometown team
Former MLB star Fergie Jenkins was honoured by his hometown Chatham-Kent Barnstormers on Saturday, June 8, 2025. (Source: Riley Smids) Canadian baseball icon Fergie Jenkins was honoured by his hometown Chatham-Kent Barnstormers on Saturday evening. Jenkins further solidified his presence in baseball immortality with his number 31 being retired by the organization. A member of the Baseball Hall of Fame and widely considered one of the greatest Canadians to ever play the sport, the decision to honour Jenkins was considered a 'no-brainer' for Barnstormers management. 'We wanted to honour him more than anything because it's important, like, you don't see many major leaguers or even professional athletes [come] from a town,' said the team's owner Dom Dinelle. 080625 - Fergie Jenkins Former MLB star Fergie Jenkins was honoured by his hometown Chatham-Kent Barnstormers on Saturday, June 8, 2025. (Source: Riley Smids) Ahead of Saturday night's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs of the Intercounty Baseball League, Jenkins threw out the first pitch before his number was unveiled in the outfield. Dinelle said the 82 year old was thankful for the recognition and stayed to watch the game, as he often does when in town. In their inaugural season, the Barnstormers retired number 42 for former big leaguer and team ambassador Bill Atkinson. 'it was important to deal with that because we didn't want anybody to say, 'Hey, I want 42, I want 31,' No way, no way, no way we were going to do that,' Dinelle said. 'These two icons are really important for the organization and for Chatham.' Dinelle said it's significant for players and young fans to be able to see the success from the Chatham-Kent baseball community. The game saw 1,037 people show up in what proved to be a 14-5 Barnstormers win.
