Struggling Diamondbacks Receive Encouraging News on A.J. Puk

Yahoo30-04-2025

Amid a slew of moves in the final hours of the 2024 trade deadline, the Miami Marlins traded A.J. Puk to the Arizona Diamondbacks for infield prospect Deyvision de los Santos.
In 2018, Puk was the No. 1 prospect for the Oakland Athletics and No. 33 in all of baseball. Since debuting in 2019, Puk hasn't necessarily been a star closer but more a reliable middle reliever.

Down the stretch for the Diamondbacks, however, Puk pitched to a sterling 1.32 ERA and picked up two saves. In 2025, Puk has pitched to a 3.38 ERA with a team-leading four saves before going down with an elbow injury April 17th.
Following their 8-3 loss against the New York Mets, however, the Diamondbacks provided an optimistic update on the towering left-hander.

It was announced that Puk would be shut down from throwing for two to three weeks due to a flexor strain in his elbow, though the team does not believe he'll need surgery.
Puk went for imaging after being placed on the 15-day injured list on April 19th, which raised alarm for a possible Tommy John surgery. Puk will still be out for an extensive period of time, likely until at least June with the length required to build back up, but for a Diamondbacks team in the throes of a competitive National League West, this news is considered a win.

Justin Martinez will likely become the closer for the Diamondbacks in Puk's absence. Martinez has a 0.90 ERA in 10 innings this season along with three saves, fueled by an absurd 61.9% ground-ball rate.

Dodgers Star Pitcher Speaks Out on Rival Giants Acquiring Rafael Devers

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Game respects game, and Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw was quick to give credit where it's due to his team's biggest rival. Kershaw was being interviewed during Sunday Night Baseball's broadcast when he brought up the San Francisco Giants trading for Rafael Devers. While he could've found a way around the question or dismissed it, the future Hall of Famer was very quick to praise the Giants for the move. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 14: Clayton Kershaw #22 of the Los Angeles Dodgers pitches during the game at Dodgers Stadium on June 14, 2025 in Los Angeles, California."How about that trade? That's wild!," Kershaw told the Sunday Night Baseball crew. "Buster's really doing it! Not Olney, Buster Posey's really doing it over there. Good for Buster, man. He's going for it. I'd consider (Rafael Devers) one of probably the top 10 hitters in the game at worst. He's definitely a game-changer." Despite moving to designated hitter this season, Devers has been productive at the plate. Entering Monday, he hit .271 with 14 home runs and 57 RBI with an OPS+ of 149, which is well above league average. He popped his 15th homer in what ended up being his final hit as a member of the Red Sox. Kershaw went on to then say what every baseball fan was thinking about when looking at the Giants roster. "[It'll] be interesting to see what position he plays," Kershaw added in his interview. I know they have a big prospect at first base coming, so it'll be interesting to see if he plays first. Obviously they have Matt Chapman, one of the best in the game at third, so even if he's just DH for however long that contract is ... I don't know, man, it makes them better right now for sure." Even after the weekend series, the Giants trail the Dodgers by just two games in the National League West division. They will push and continue to add as the deadline nears in an effort to surpass the Dodgers and their recent division domination. Shohei Ohtani to make first pitching start since elbow surgery vs. Padres

Shohei Ohtani is going to be the starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night against the San Diego Padres, 21 months after the two-way star had elbow surgery. The Dodgers made the announcement after Sunday night's 5-4 win over the San Francisco Giants. Ohtani will likely be used as an opener as the National League West leaders kick off a four-game set against the visiting Padres. Ohtani has not pitched in a game since Aug. 23, 2023, when he got hurt during a start for the Los Angeles Angels against the Cincinnati Reds. He had Tommy John surgery on Oct. 1, 2018, and is recovering from right elbow surgery on Sept. 19, 2023. In the second season of a $700 million, 10-year contract, he paused his pitching work after a mound session on Feb. 25 to prepare for opening day as a hitter, then started bullpen sessions on March 29 and batting practice on March 25. A three-time MVP, Ohtani is hitting .297 with an NL-leading 1.035 OPS, 25 homers and 41 RBIs. A batter only last year in his first season with the Dodgers, Ohtani hit .290 with 54 homers, 130 RBIs and 59 stolen bases. On Sunday, Roberts said rookie right-hander Roki Sasaki appears likely to be sidelined for a lengthy stretch. With Sasaki (right shoulder impingement), Blake Snell (left shoulder inflammation) and Tyler Glasnow (right shoulder inflammation) on the injured list, the Dodgers have resorted to bullpen games. Sasaki has not pitched in a game since May 9 and is not part of the team's long-term pitching plans this season. "I think that's what the mindset should be," Roberts said before the game. "Being thrust into this environment certainly was a big undertaking for him, and now you layer in the health part and the fact he's a starting pitcher, knowing what the build-up (required to return) entails … I think that's the prudent way to go about it." Sasaki, 23, went 1-1 with a 4.72 ERA in eight starts after joining the Dodgers from the Pacific League's Chiba Lotte Marines, averaging less than 4 1/3 innings per start. He walked 22 and struck out 24 in 34 1/3 innings, and his fastball averaged 95.7 mph, down 3-4 mph from his average in Japan. Roberts said Sasaki was pain-free when he resumed throwing in early June, but the pitcher was shut down after feeling discomfort this past week. Sasaki recently received a cortisone injection in the shoulder; Roberts said no further scans are planned. "I don't think it's pain," Roberts said. "I don't know if it's discomfort, if it's tightness, if he's just not feeling strong, whatever the adjective you want to use. That's more of a question for Roki, as far as the sensation he's feeling. "He's just not feeling like he can ramp it up, and we're not going to push him to do something he doesn't feel good about right now." Reporting by The Associated Press. Andy Pages' 3-run homer pushes Dodgers to 5-4 win over Giants

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Andy Pages hit a game-turning three-run home run in the fifth inning, Shohei Ohtani had three hits and scored two runs, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4 on Sunday night. The Dodgers trailed 3-2 when Ohtani and Mookie Betts singled to open the fifth. Freddie Freeman grounded out and Teoscar Hernández struck out, before Pages drove a slider from Giants reliever Ryan Walker into the left-center field pavilion for his 13th homer and a 5-3 lead. Pages also had a sacrifice fly in the first, and Tommy Edman hit a solo homer in the second to help the Dodgers push their National League West lead to two games over San Francisco. Dodgers right-hander Dustin May (4-4) overcame control problems to complete six innings in which he gave up three runs and six hits, walked four, hit two batters and struck out three. Tanner Scott struck out the side in the ninth for his 13th save. Giants right-hander Sean Hjelle replaced scheduled starter Kyle Harrison, who was traded to Boston in the blockbuster deal for Rafael Devers about 20 minutes before first pitch, and allowed two runs and three hits in 3 2/3 innings. Reliever Joey Lucchesi (0-1), who replaced Harrison on the roster, took the loss. Jung Hoo Lee capped a three-run fourth inning for the Giants with a two-run triple. Daniel Johnson pinch-hit a solo homer off Dodgers reliever Kirby Yates in the eighth. Key stat Pages is batting .313 (25 for 80) with four homers and 17 RBIs in 21 games since May 24. Up next Dodgers right-hander Ben Casparius (4-1, 2.86 ERA) will start Monday night's series opener against San Diego in Los Angeles. Giants left-hander Robbie Ray (8-1, 2.55) will start Tuesday night's series opener against Cleveland in San Francisco. ___
