Michigan football's latest 2026 commits: Lee, Robinson lead CBS Sports ratings
The Wolverines have been on a recruiting heater in the past week-plus, and they're showing no signs of slowing down. Friday saw Michigan football add two commitments, with one being Honolulu (Hawaii) Kamehameha four-star offensive tackle Malakai Lee, one of the maize and blue's top overall offensive targets in the 2026 recruiting cycle.
But, as CBS Sports notes, not all commitments are created equal. And the network has created a new way to evaluate pledges to determine just how impactful their additions might be.
With what CBS Sports is calling a 'commitment impact score,' the network weighs the roster boost, how much momentum the commitment creates, and how much the recruit fits into a team's culture. Then, they're scored from 1-10, with a 9-10 being a 'game-changer,' a 7-8 being a 'strong add,' a 5-6 being 'solid depth,' and 1-4 being 'low impact.'
Starting with the newest pledge, the aforementioned Lee, the Wolverines got what CBS Sports calls a strong add.

Michigan's offensive line had been the gold standard during the Jim Harbaugh era and the program has recruited well enough for that to continue. The recruiting bubble seems to have popped for Michigan as several have either joined or will soon join the Wolverine's 2026 recruiting class. His potential is insane as he has good size and a verified 85 inch wingspan.
But Lee committed about 10-15 minutes after another was added to the class, with Richmond (Va.) Huguenot three-star linebacker Markel Dabney flipping from SMU to Michigan football just before the announcement in Hawaii.
Of course, Dabney isn't quite as highly regarded as Lee, with CBS Sports noting him as 'modest,' but it's still a good addition from the network's perspective.

Markel Dabney is a modest addition, but he did flip from SMU. His official visit list is not littered with the nation's top programs, but Michigan has done well identifying and developing 3-star recruits over the years like Kris Jenkins, Mike Sainristil, DJ Turner, Mike Morris and others. The timing is good because the Virginia native is a part of a big recruiting run for the Wolverines.
As CBS Sports notes, just because talent evaluators aren't all in line calling Dabney a home run doesn't mean that Michigan football won't develop him in a way that is beyond impactful. And certainly, the Wolverines are excited about Dabney's potential in Wink Martindale's system.
The new scoring table also covers some other recent Michigan commitments. Offensive lineman Marky Walbridge got a score of five, solid depth, while wide receiver Zion Robinson got a nine -- 'game changer.'
The Michigan wide receiver room received a significant talent upgrade with the addition of Robinson, the sixth-ranked wide receiver and No. 71 overall prospect in the 2026 class who chose the Wolverines over the likes of Miami, Nebraska and Stanford.
The 6-foot-3, 180-pounder is an explosive athlete who posted multiple sub-11-second 100-meter times as a sophomore in 2024 - that same year, he won the Texas 6A state title in the high jump (6-8). This marks the second straight cycle that the Wolverines have gone into the Lone Star State to land an elite wideout (Katy Jordan's Andrew Marsh was the No. 82 overall prospect and No. 13 wide receiver in 2025). We expect Robinson and Marsh to be great targets for Bryce Underwood in the future.
Four-star defensive tackle Titan Davis also was evaluated and got a score of eight, strong add.

CBS Sports ranks Harbaugh-Day feud among top coaching rivalries in the past 25 years
Everyone knows all about the great rivalries in sports -- Yankees-Red Sox, Lakers-Celtics, Texas-Oklahoma. But perhaps the greatest is Michigan football vs. Ohio State. While The Game had been a somewhat respectful affair, dating back to the Bo vs. Woody days, it's become increasingly hostile as of late. And the heat really turned up once Ryan Day took over the Buckeyes program from Urban Meyer -- who had gone 7-0 in his tenure against hte Wolverines. Day followed suit, winning in his first year, 2019. The two teams didn't play in 2020 due to COVID-19 hampering the maize and blue. But in 2021, when OSU considered it to still be its birthright to win The Game, Michigan upset the mighty Buckeyes and took away everything they thought they deserved that year. And the next. And the next. And the next. Well, Ohio State did win the national championship this year, but it cannot boast that it did so while having beaten its rival. CBS Sports put together a list of the greatest rivalries among coaches over the past 25 years, and Jim Harbaugh vs. Ryan Day made the cut -- mostly for obvious reasons. Ohio State beat Michigan 56-27 in Day's first year as coach, which propelled it to a Big Ten title and an appearance in the College Football Playoff. In Aug. 2020, during a private Big Ten coaches teleconference, Harbaugh reportedly interrupted Day while he was speaking to accuse Day of violating NCAA rules against early on-field instruction and drills during the COVID-19 pandemic. During a team meeting later that day, Day told Ohio State's players and coaches that the Big Ten better have a mercy rule because the Buckeyes were going to "hang 100" on Michigan in their next game. Ohio State and Michigan did not meet in 2020 due to COVID-19 complications, and in 2021 Michigan cruised to a 42-27 victory, its first win in the series since 2011. After the game, Harbaugh was asked about Ohio State throwing shots at Michigan during its winning streak. "Let's move on with humble hearts. Take the high road," Harbaugh said. "But there's definitely stuff that people said that spurred us on even more. Sometimes people that are standing on third base think they hit a triple, but they didn't." Ahead of 2022's installment of "The Game," Harbaugh told the Stoney & Jansen with Heather Show that his "third base" comment was in response to Day saying Ohio State was going to "hang 100" on Michigan. The Wolverines won in 2022, and again in 2023, before capping that 2023 season with their first national championship since the BCS era began. Those wins weren't without controversy, though. News broke in Oct. 2023 that the Big Ten was investigating Michigan for an alleged impermissible sign-stealing operation constructed by former staffer Connor Stalions. Initial rumors swirled that Ohio State tipped the NCAA off, and Day had private investigators looking into the issue. Day refuted his involvement. The NCAA later confirmed that neither Ohio State nor anyone associated with the Buckeyes are involved in its investigation. Harbaugh is actually on the list twice, as he also appeared on it for his rivalry with then-USC head coach Pete Carroll during his time at Stanford. Of course, this past win for the maize and blue over the scarlet and gray came under new head coach Sherrone Moore -- who also beat Day and the Buckeyes in 2023 with Harbaugh having been suspended due to the alleged advanced scouting scandal. Will the coaching rivalry carry over between Moore and Day? Moore is a bit more genteel than Harbaugh, but it kind of feels like that will still be the case.

Ohio State football loses out on 4-star 2026 defensive end to Michigan
The Ohio State football program has seen a mixed bag of recruiting results lately. It got good news on the defensive line the past few days, but then bad news followed with the loss of a couple of targets on Sunday. One of those misses came in a battle with Michigan for four-star defensive end Carter Meadows. Out of Washington, D.C., Ohio State made a big push for Meadows and was thought to be in the thick of the race to get him, but Michigan was able to close the deal late, winning a crucial battle between the two old rivals. The 6-foot, six-inch, 225-pounder is ranked as the No. 72 overall player and ninth edge rusher in the 2026 class according to the 247Sports Composite rankings and was a priority for Ohio State. Now, it'll be back to tracking others still on the board to round out talent on the defensive line and edge. Penn State and South Carolina were also in play for Meadows. Things will continue to be up and down as we go through the summer and into the season on our way to more or less finalizing the 2026 recruiting class in December during the Early Signing Period. All bets are off in today's day and age of NIL, the transfer portal, and now direct revenue-sharing coming down the line. Michigan football's 2026 class hits top 10 with Carter Meadows' commitment
At this time last week, Michigan football wasn't even in the top 25 teams in terms of college football recruiting rankings. By Friday evening, the Wolverines were just outside the top 10. Now, they're firmly in it. That's because the maize and blue secured the commitment of 2026 Washington (D.C.) Gonzaga five-star edge rusher Carter Meadows on Sunday, helping propel a very good class into a potentially great one. With Meadows in the fold, he's already the highest-ranked commit that the Wolverines have, and now the top of the class is surging on top of the numbers growing. With Meadows in the fold, here is how Michigan rose in the 247Sports team rankings to No. 9 (up from 11), with an average rating of 91.13, and a total score of 241.49. With 18 commitments, Michigan is now ahead of Penn State, which has 23. Here is the full class using 247Sports Composite rankings: The class is expected to continue growing with four-star cornerback Andre Clarke set to decide on Monday, four-star nickel Donovan Webb set to decide on Wednesday, while four-star offensive lineman John Turntine III and five-star wide receiver Calvin Russell are set to decide on Friday. All but Turntine have at least one prediction indicating they'll choose the maize and blue. With Meadows off the board, there are but two big fish remaining in the 2026 class in the aforementioned Calvin Russell as well as Mineral (Va.) Louisa County five-star running back Savion Hiter.
