SIA posts record $2.8 billion full-year profit; staff to get 7.45 months' bonus

SINGAPORE – Singapore Airlines (SIA) posted a record $2.8 billion net profit for the year that ended March 31 and is said to be rewarding staff with a profit-sharing bonus of 7.45 months.
Its record profit was boosted by a one-off non-cash accounting gain of $1.1 billion from the Air India-Vistara merger, it said in a filing on the Singapore Exchange on May 15.
Group revenue also climbed 2.8 per cent from the year before to hit a record $19.54 billion, driven by resilient demand for air travel and cargo uplift, it added.
In response to queries from The Straits Times on staff bonus, SIA said it can confirm that employees will receive a profit-sharing bonus in recognition of their dedication and hard work in FY2024/25.
'This is based on a long-standing formula that has been agreed with our staff unions,' SIA said, without disclosing details of the formula and bonus.
The 7.45 months bonus is slightly lower than the 7.94 months for the year before.
The Air India-Vistara merger was completed in November 2024. Before the merger, Vistara was jointly owned by Tata Sons and SIA. After the merger, SIA holds a 25.1 per cent stake in the enlarged Air India, allowing it to participate directly in the fast-expanding Indian aviation market.
SIA and its budget airline Scoot also carried a record 39.4 million passengers, up 8.1 per cent, it said.
Despite carrying more passengers, passenger yields – the amount earned per passenger for each kilometre flown – dipped 5.5 per cent to 10.3 cents per revenue passenger-kilometre. This was amid intensified competition due to industry-wide capacity injection, SIA said.
Passenger traffic growth, which stood at 6.4 per cent, also lagged behind its capacity expansion of 8.2 per cent.
Meanwhile, its cargo flown revenue improved by $94 million, or 4.4 per cent, buoyed by the strong demand for e-commerce and perishables, as well as the spillover from disruptions to sea freight.
SIA's board of directors recommended a final dividend of 30 cents per share for the full year.
Including the interim dividend of 10 cents per share paid on Dec 11, 2024, the total dividend for the year will be 40 cents per share, representing a total dividend distribution of $1.2 billion for the year.
The final dividend, which is subject to shareholders' approval, will be paid on Aug 27.
Looking ahead, the global airline industry faces a challenging operating environment amid changing tariff policies and trade tensions, economic and geopolitical uncertainties, and continued supply chain constraints, SIA said.
'These factors may impact consumer and business confidence, potentially affecting both passenger and cargo markets,' it added.
'The group remains vigilant, closely monitoring developments and prepared to respond swiftly to market conditions.'
On a positive note , SIA said shifts in global passenger and trade flows may also open new opportunities for the group, with its well-diversified global passenger and cargo network.
It added that its hub in Singapore offers a strategic advantage, given its position at the centre of growing economies in South-east Asia, South Asia, and the wider Asia-Pacific region, and the group's strong presence in these markets.
'The group's dual-brand strategy, which leverages both SIA and Scoot, provides it with the flexibility to offer customers a wide range of options while responding nimbly to market dynamics,' it said.
It is also prepared to partner other airlines to open up growth opportunities, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.
'Continued focus on product leadership and service excellence, including investments in next-generation aircraft, new cabin products, and airline lounges, will help the group's airlines maintain their competitive edge by providing customers with more value and enhancing the end-to-end travel experience,' SIA said.
The group's operating fleet s tands at a total of 205 aircraft as of March 31. SIA operates 145 passenger aircraft and seven freighters, while Scoot has 53 passenger aircraft.
As of May 1, the group has 78 aircraft on order.
Its passenger network also covered 128 destinations in 36 countries and territories as of March 31.
SIA will also increase services to Brisbane, Colombo, Jakarta, Johannesburg, London (Gatwick), Manila, and Seattle for the operating season from March to October. Meanwhile, Scoot launched services to Iloilo City in April and will begin operations to Vienna in June.
SIA will also start revenue-sharing flights with All Nippon Airways (ANA) between Japan and Singapore from September, with the joint fare products for these services going on sale in May.
To bolster its premium positioning, SIA had announced a $1.1 billion investment to install all-new long-haul cabin products across its Airbus A350-900 long-haul and ultra-long-range fleet, including the introduction of its new First Class cabin in seven A350-900 ultra long range aircraft.
It also announced a $45 million transformation of its SilverKris and KrisFlyer Gold lounges at Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 2, to provide more space, upgraded facilities and more food and beverage options.
The group also continues to invest in its digital capabilities, including Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), giving it an edge in the competitive aviation landscape, SIA said.
SIA shares closed 0.3 per cent, or two cents, higher at $6.88 on May 15, before its financial results were announced.

DBS tops US$100 billion market value in Singapore Exchange first

ST PHOTO: LIM YAOHUI SINGAPORE – DBS Group Holdings became the first listed company in Singapore to top US$100 billion (S$128.6 billion) in market value, helped by a weaker US dollar that amplified gains on the local stock market. South-east Asia's top lender closed 0.8 per cent higher at $45.49 in Singapore trading on June 9, giving it a market capitalisation of $129.36 billion (US$100.6 billion), extending its gains this year to more than 4 per cent. The advance in DBS's share price in US-dollar terms was driven by the weaker greenback. So far this year, the Singapore dollar has appreciated about 6 per cent against the US dollar. In local currency terms, DBS has eased slightly from its record closing high of $46.67 on Feb 26. At the current market value, DBS ranks about 22nd among global banks, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. That's ahead of Tokyo-based Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, but half that of HSBC Holdings. Some of Asia's biggest banks like Commonwealth Bank of Australia and India's HDFC Bank have bigger market capitalisations. The milestone comes after Singapore banks pledged in recent months to hand over billions of dollars in surplus capital to investors, encouraged by record-high earnings in 2024. DBS in particular, has benefited from increases in lending and wealth fees. Other than DBS, Singapore-based Sea that is listed in New York reached this valuation before. DBS chief executive officer Tan Su Shan took charge of the bank in March from Piyush Gupta after his 15-year leadership. Ms Tan said at her first earnings call in May that the bank seeks to benefit from supply-chain changes undertaken by its clients and increased demand for hedging foreign exchange exposure amid US President Donald Trump's tariff moves. 'A lot of DBS's out-performance has been due to the larger growth of its wealth management, which is really starting to challenge top players in Asia,' said Michael Makdad, a senior analyst at Morningstar, adding he sees the business continuing to grow. 'Despite Trump's tariffs, the environment remains relatively benign for Singapore banks which are increasing share dividends and buybacks more than we would've expected a year ago.' Commentary: India market shines amid cloudy outlook for global aviation
NEW DELHI: India was a fitting host of the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) annual general meeting in New Delhi last week. The country has emerged in recent years as a leader in the aviation sector, as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked in a keynote address. While IATA now includes more than 350 airlines, with 31 joining over the last year, its Indian members have captured the most attention with rapid growth and massive aircraft orders. IndiGo, which has become one of the world's largest and fastest growing airlines, announced another 10 new international destinations and four domestic destinations for a total of 50 and 95 respectively. IndiGo also used the IATA meeting, which it hosted with unusual fanfare for a low-cost carrier, to announce another 30 orders for A350-900 widebody aircraft. IndiGo now has nearly 1,000 aircraft on order while the Air India group has nearly 600 on order with reported plans for another 200. Air India adopted a much lower profile at the IATA meeting despite its new branding and service improvements. MASSIVE GROWTH POTENTIAL IN INDIA India has become the world's third largest air transport market after the United States and China, reaching 174 million passengers in 2024. IATA forecasts passenger traffic in India will triple over the next 20 years. The country has massive growth potential as it is still relatively underserved. China now has a smaller population than India, but has more than four times the number of passengers and more than five times the number of commercial aircraft. IATA pointed out that India accounts for slightly over 4 per cent of the world's passenger traffic but almost 18 per cent of the global population. India's middle class is growing rapidly along with discretionary income, fuelling soaring demand for both domestic and international travel. Its air transport market has emerged in the post-pandemic era as the next China, which boomed in the decade before COVID-19, particularly for outbound international travel. However, India faces a few geopolitical challenges. The IATA meeting took place just three weeks after the ceasefire to a military conflict between India and Pakistan – a conflict that could have derailed India's first time hosting the meeting since 1983. Pakistan airspace remains closed to Indian carriers, which are now bracing for at least several more months of no access, putting them at a competitive disadvantage to foreign airlines. CHALLENGING MARKET CONDITIONS ACROSS ASIA Geopolitical issues, trade tensions and economic uncertainty are clouding the overall outlook for the global aviation industry. Airline profitability remains low, making the industry vulnerable to shocks. IATA expects airlines will generate US$36 billion in profits on US$979 billion in revenues in 2025, which equates to only a 3.7 per cent net margin or a profit of just US$7.20 per passenger. In 2024, the net profit margin was 3.4 per cent despite relatively buoyant demand and significantly higher air fares compared to pre-COVID levels. In Asia, market conditions remain challenging, despite the growth expectations. Asia Pacific carriers are expected to only account for US$4.9 billion or 13.6 per cent of the global profits this year. This equates to a net margin of less than 2 per cent. When excluding a handful of highly profitable airlines, the industry in this region is collectively only breaking even. Competition is intense and yields or air fares on many regional routes are not sufficient to cover higher costs. Some markets have still not yet fully recovered from the pandemic. Several airlines in Asia are now in a precarious financial position and will likely need to restructure to survive. India's market is exceptional in that it is significantly larger than pre-COVID levels and continues to grow rapidly, but only IndiGo is profitable. Other airlines are unprofitable from several longstanding issues including high taxation and excessive regulation. AIRLINES ARE NOTORIOUSLY RESILIENT The airline industry has never been easy. However, airline executives have never had to navigate such a challenging and complicated environment. In addition to the difficult geopolitical and economic environment, supply chain issues are expected to persist until at least the end of this decade. IATA director general Willie Walsh put pressure on aircraft and engine manufacturers 'to sort this mess out'. Sustainability also comes with an increasingly hefty price tag. The industry is starting to raise concerns about meeting net zero goals with Walsh acknowledging that it does not see new technology playing a significant part in the abatement of carbon emissions before 2050. Nevertheless, the mood last week in New Delhi was still upbeat. Airlines are notoriously resilient and steadfast about long-term growth prospects. India is an undeniable driver for global growth and its leaders are rightly proud of recent aviation achievements.

Previous investors have held similar dreams of breaking into the U.S. sports league market, only to be thwarted by the nation's obsession with baseball, basketball and American football. IT entrepreneur Govil, however, is confident that along with Microsoft's India-born CEO Satya Nadella and Silicon Valley's Anand Rajaraman and Venky Harinarayan he can embed the short, jazzy version of cricket deeply into the U.S. sporting landscape "T20 leagues are the future," Govil, who owns Washington Freedom, one of the six franchises in the Major League Cricket (MLC), told Reuters. "Like Yoga, like Bollywood weddings, things from India and it's crazy here. "People here just love Indian wedding. When we have weddings in hotels, people just stop and watch. It's a spectacle, right?" Although cricket originated in England, India is now its financial engine with a cash cow in named the Indian Premier League (IPL) T20 competition, which has a brand value of $12 billion. IPL franchises with deep pockets also own teams in leagues in England, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, West Indies and the United States. The U.S. featured in the first international cricket match, against Canada, in New York in 1844, but cricket remains very much a niche sport in the country. RAISED PROFILE The introduction of the MLC in 2023 and staging matches in last year's T20 World Cup have raised the game's profile. Cricket returning to Olympics after a gap of 128 years at the 2028 Los Angeles Games will be "another big impetus", said Govil, who was born in Canada but grew up in New Delhi before moving to the U.S. Govil, who also owns 50% stake in the Welsh Fire franchise of The Hundred tournament in England, said MLC franchises learned a lot from their interaction with IPL counterparts. "One of the IPL owners came to my house and he educated me on how to build a team," he said. The presence of India's marquee players in the MLC would have been the icing on the cake but Govil respects the Indian board's policy of not allowing its players to take part in leagues abroad. "I'm sure they have some logic behind why they're doing what they're doing, and I respect that," he said. "I have to succeed in the cards which are dealt to me." Govil knows that cricket in the U.S. cannot rely only on the Indian market or south Asian diasporas in order to be successful. "We want to grow domestic talent. We cannot just rely on international players," he said. "We also have to create our own market here, because we cannot just rely on Indian eyeballs watching our matches." "We are in this for a long haul," Govil added. "We are making a lot of investments. We all have to have our own stadiums.
