A yellow heat-health alert has been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), as the Met Office forecasts temperatures of 30C on Friday.
The alert, the first of its kind this year, is in place from 9pm on Thursday to 8am on Sunday and covers the East of England, the East Midlands, London and the South East.

Under UKHSA and the Met Office's Weather-Health alerting system, a yellow alert means there could be an increased use of healthcare services by vulnerable people.

It may lead to an increase in risk to health for individuals aged over 65 or those with pre-existing health conditions, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, said: "Our findings show that even moderate heat can result in serious health outcomes, especially for older adults, and it is therefore important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.
"The forecasted high temperatures are expected to be short-lived but could primarily impact those over the age of 65 or those with pre-existing health conditions.

"If you have friends, family or neighbours who are more vulnerable, it is important to check in on them and ensure they are aware of the forecasts and are following the necessary advice."
The Met Office has also issued yellow thunderstorm warnings as the warmer weather arrives.
Warnings have been issued for parts of south-west England, South Wales and Northern Ireland for Wednesday night and Thursday.

A further warning has been issued for south-east England and East Anglia from Friday afternoon into early Saturday.
Met Office chief meteorologist Neil Armstrong said, "A weather system will push northwards through tomorrow, bringing heavy rain and a risk of thunderstorms to parts of southwest England, most of Wales, and later into Northern Ireland.
"40mm of rain could fall in 3 hours or less, leading to the potential for disruption. Further thunderstorms will develop during the afternoon across England and Wales, moving quickly northwards with hail and lightning.

"Temperatures will remain high, with 26 or 27C possible again in the north Midlands and parts of north London."
Deputy chief meteorologist Tony Wisson said; "By Friday afternoon and evening, heavy and thundery showers are likely to spread across southeastern England and East Anglia, tracking north-eastwards overnight.
"With much of the rain falling in a short space of time, there is a risk of impacts such as surface water flooding. Frequent lightning, gusty winds and hail could pose additional hazards."

Yorkshire drought declared

A drought has been declared across Yorkshire by the Environment Agency (EA).The drought is due to weeks of usually dry weather across the county, which has meant low water levels in rivers and reservoirs. The announcement comes after England experienced its driest spring in more than 100 years, according to the Met Water's announcement isn't the first of 2025 - in late May a drought was declared for the North West. What is a drought? A drought is defined by the World Health Organisation as a "prolonged dry period in the natural climate cycle that can occur anywhere in the world".Check out our guide to find out more: Why is Yorkshire experiencing a drought? Claire Barrow, the Environment Agency's planning manager for Yorkshire, said: "We had 22 days of almost no recorded rainfall in May.""While we have had some rain at the start of June, it has not been enough to reverse the impacts of the prolonged dry weather."If there's not enough rain then the levels in the reservoirs that supply water across a certain area go down and if they fall beyond a certain level over a period of time then a drought is the drought announcement doesn't change much right now for those in Yorkshire, if the dry weather continues measures could be put in place to help reduce the amount of water could include things such as bans on using hosepipes. Yorkshire's last drought occurred in 2022 - at this time a hosepipe ban was put in place. The 2022 ban lasted from August to that drought, Yorkshire Water also made recommendations to customers such as: singing a four minute song whilst showering to keep showers shortonly cleaning cars' mirrors, windows and lights and not watering garden lawns Yorkshire Water said that reservoir levels are at 62.3% - which they say is a lot lower than the average for this time of year (85.5%).But a spokesperson for the company said the reduction in levels had slowed due to some recent rainfall.

UK households issued warning to keep windows and doors shut from 10am to 3pm

UK households issued warning to keep windows and doors shut from 10am to 3pm The UK has been basking in hot weather with several heatwaves so far this year but that's bad news for hay fever sufferers - as trees, grass and weed pollens are all in season at the time Experts say close your windows to avoid hay fever symptoms (Image: Ольга Симонова via Getty Images ) Hay fever sufferers across Britain are being warned to keep windows and doors firmly closed, particularly during the hours of 10am and 3pm, as hay fever season takes its toll from late March through to September With tree pollen kickstarting the season in late March followed by an onslaught of grass and weed pollens throughout the summer, many are battling persistent symptoms. The UK witnessed the warmest meteorological spring and May since records began in 1884, coupled with high temperatures in late June. ‌ This has created what specialists describe as "ideal" conditions for an increase in pollen. ‌ Those tormented by hay fever know all too well that symptoms like sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes often intensify from late March right up to September, heavily influenced by weather patterns, reports the Mirror. There's no magic pill for hay fever, but experts stress the importance of pre-emptive actions to keep those pesky symptoms at bay. Stay informed on the latest health news by signing up to our newsletter here Article continues below They advise against flinging your windows and doors open when pollen's playing up, as it invites those sneeze-inducing particles in to settle on your soft furnishings – not what you want! NHS guidance sides with the cautious, suggesting keeping windows and doors shut "as much as possible", but if you're craving a breath of fresh air during the balmy weather, aim to crack them open outside peak pollen times. Saxton Blades' very own DIY expert, Glen Peskett, chimes in with some sound advice for sniffle-stricken Brits: allergy-proofing is key and that means windows and doors should stay firmly shut between the hours of 10am and 3pm, especially on blustery days. Article continues below That's when pollen counts peak and flinging things wide open is just asking for trouble. Glen added: "It's important to get fresh air, and when the weather begins to improve, it's even more tempting to open your home up to the warmer elements. "However, during peak pollen times - usually between 10 am and 3 pm, and on windy days - it's extremely beneficial to keep your windows and doors shut. This is especially important in bedrooms, where you want to breathe easy at night."
