
Volvo to slash 15% of its workforce

Volvo will cut 3,000 jobs as it battles against the slowdown of electric vehicle sales across the globe. The Swedish car giant revealed this morning 15 percent of its office workforce will be impacted, with the majority of those hitting white-collar jobs in the Scandinavian country.
It forms part of a £1.4bn cost-saving strategy Volvo announced earlier this month in order to 'offset external headwinds' caused by the decline in EV sales, high costs and global trade uncertainty. Calling Monday's actions 'difficult decisions' made to 'build a stronger and more resilient Volvo,' Hakan Samuelsson, chief executive, said: 'The automotive industry is in the middle of a challenging period.
'To address this, we must improve our cash flow generation and structurally lower our costs. At the same time, we will continue to ensure the development of the talent we need for our ambitious future.' Owned by China's Geely Holding Group with production in both China and Europe, Volvo has been highly exposed to the 25 percent tariffs introduced in the US by President Trump on imported cars.
Volvo confirmed its annual electric car sales plummet 11 percent in April, with sales of its electrified models – fully electric and plug-in hybrids – falling 16 percent compared to the same period last year. Volvo has its main headquarters and product development offices in Gothenburg, Sweden, and makes cars and SUVs in Belgium, South Carolina and China.
As of 2024, Volvo employs roughly 44,000 employees globally, with nearly 20,000 being 'white-collar' workers. Telling Reuters that cuts are 'everywhere' and 'considerable' Samuelsson confirmed: 'It's white-collar in almost all areas, including R&D, communication, human resources.
'I think it will be very healthy, and will save us money and give space for people to (take on) bigger responsibilities.' Samuelsson was reappointed as chief executive on 30 March after the end of Scotsman Jim Rowan's three-year tenure following a rocky period of EV sales. Volvo is one of the car makers to have invested most in the EV transition, as it was one of the first to offer an electrified version of every model in its range.
In 2021, Volvo said all of its cars would go electric by 2030, before U-turning on that last year after admitting it needed to scale back the ambitious deadline due to a number of issues including 'additional uncertainties created by recent tariffs on EVs in various markets'. In its latest sales report from April, Volvo confirmed that its share of fully electric cars constituted 20 percent of all cars sold for the month while the share of plug-in hybrid models accounted for 25 percent.
Fully electric sales were down 32 percent from April 2024. While poor EV uptake has hit Volvo just like many other manufacturers, Samuelsson said it could become impossible to import the smallest cars in the company's line-up to the US due to the new tariffs.
On Friday Donald Trump said he was recommending a straight 50 percent tariff on goods from the European Union starting June 1, saying the EU has been hard to deal with on trade. Samuelsson told Reuters a 50 percent tariff would limit the ability of Volvo to sell its Belgium-made EX30 electric vehicle in the US and customers would have to pay a large part of the tariff-related cost increases.

In this economy, and with more powerful PlayStations and Xboxes available for less, that's quite an outlay. I could make a financial argument for the Switch 2. Its predecessor, the original Switch, has been around for eight years now. If this new console has the same shelf life, that amounts to about £50 a a pound a week. Most people's chocolate habits cost more. But financial arguments are boring, when the Switch 2 is anything but. Although this is mostly just a bigger, better Switch, it's bigger and better in exciting ways. The larger, higher-definition screen is tremendously good for handheld play. Its more powerful innards mean that it can handle some very visually demanding games, including Cyberpunk 2077, which is also available now. It will come in two varieties: just the console and the console bundled with Mario Kart World. The former will cost £395.99 and the latter £429.99 Can the PS5 and Xbox Series X run these games even better? Yes. But a PC can run them even better again. And none have the easy, well, switchability of the Switch 2, which can move from your TV to your handbag in an instant. Technological domination isn't everything. Then there are the Switch 2's innovations, like its new mouse mode. The detachable Joy-Con controllers can be laid on their sides and moved and clicked just like the mouse for your desktop computer. It adds to the sense that Nintendo has made the Swiss Army knife of consoles. Everything for all occasions. The real draw, though, is the games. Neither the PlayStation nor the Xbox will ever get Mario Kart World, which is a loss for them. This first open-world entry in the madcap racing series is — much like the Switch 2 itself — an improvement on its already great predecessor. And think of all the joys to come! A new Donkey Kong game in July, which looks as though it delivers on its hero's full destructive potential. Followed by, presumably, new Mario and Zelda releases in future. Get saving.

Zia Yusuf: Chairman of Reform UK resigns
The chairman of Reform UK, Zia Yusuf, has resigned. In a statement, Mr Yusuf said in a post on X that working to get the party elected is no longer "a good use of my time". He said: "11 months ago I became chairman of Reform. I've worked full time as a volunteer to take the party from 14 to 30%, quadrupled its membership and delivered historic electoral results. "I no longer believe working to get a Reform government elected is a good use of my time, and hereby resign the office." It comes after a row in which he described a question to Sir Keir Starmer about a ban on burkas from his party's newest MP Sarah Pochin as "dumb". Rupert Lowe, a former Reform MP, was strongly critical of Mr Yusuf in the wake of the politician's suspension following allegations that he had threatened violence towards the party chair. York parking fees still too dear after price cut, traders warn
A cut in some parking charges in York following a backlash against their increase earlier this year does not go far enough, traders have April, car parking spots including Bishopthorpe Road saw prices rise from 80p per hour to £4.85, but after complaints from businesses and the public, the council decided this week to reduce fees outside the inner ring road to £3 an hour from some traders have said the £3 rate was still too expensive, and they were "very worried" shoppers would instead visit supermarkets and shopping centres with free of York councillor Kate Ravilious said the charges would be reviewed every three months to "monitor their impact". Simon Baines, who runs Millie's fruit and vegetable shop on Bishopthorpe Road, said while he welcomed the fact on-street parking fees had been reduced, he believed they were still "too expensive"."It's a little bit better, but it's still a big increase from 80p," he said."I don't see why we've had to go through all this rigmarole. It's another 21 days before this reduction goes through, so we'll have had two months of all this palaver." Joe Neeson, who runs The Bishy Weigh eco-refill shop on Bishopthorpe Road, said people running businesses in the area had "mixed feelings" about the council's decision to cut parking charges."We acknowledge the council have done a large u-turn on the back of our petition and are listening to us," he said."But the next review needs to be informed by the correct car parking data and information about various shops' takings - and I don't feel it is. "Their data isn't reflective. We traders can provide the council with all this takings information." 'Drives people away' Husband and wife team Hugo Hildyard and Florencia Clifford, who run the Partisan Cafe on Micklegate, both agreed the £3 parking fee was still too much. Ms Clifford said the fact the council had removed the option to pay for just 30 minutes parking was "really affecting businesses" in the was also "no open consultation" over the original changes, Ms Clifford said, adding: "It feels like it was an overnight thing."Meanwhile, she said the new parking payment machines were not user-friendly and excluded many potential shoppers."Now people have to use an app to pay for parking and a lot of people can't do that. I know because I've spent a lot of time doing it for them."Ms Clifford said she and her husband were worried that instead of using independent businesses on Micklegate and Bishopthorpe Road, people felt pushed towards out-of-town shopping centres with free parking."Life is quite tough already for small independent businesses," she said."Everything's gone up, and this just drives people away." Ravilious, Labour's transport spokesperson on the council, said: "While we remain committed to tackling congestion and making it easier for everyone to get around, we recognise some of the uplift in charges in areas where they were previously very low has felt too much in one go. "We promised when setting the budget we would monitor the impact of any changes. "We have listened to concerns and acted, approving several changes this week following detailed discussions with traders and local communities across the city."These charges will be reviewed at three, six and nine months in order to monitor their impact and ensure we have set them at the right level."
