One of the most visually unforgettable moments in Devdas is Aishwarya Rai's dramatic dash through the haveli in the film's climax — her saree trailing behind her, catching fire as she rushes to see Devdas one last time. While the scene is etched in cinematic history, few know the story behind how that look came together — literally overnight.
In a recent interview with News18, celebrated costume designer Neeta Lulla opened up about the behind-the-scenes scramble that made that scene possible. Lulla, who designed the elaborate costumes for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 2002 magnum opus, recalled the moment when Bhansali decided — at the last minute — to add a twist to the scene: he wanted the pallu of Paro's saree to catch fire for added emotional weight.
'We were in Aishwarya's van, it was around 7 PM, and we were looking at her outfit after the pack-up,' Neeta recalled. 'Suddenly, Sanjay said he felt the pallu needed to catch fire but feared it wouldn't be long enough for the effect.'
The demand was straightforward, but the timeline wasn't. The sarees used in the film were already 12–14 metres long, and Paro's final look had to maintain that grandeur. 'I asked Sanjay, 'Can I leave?' He looked confused,' Neeta said. 'I rushed out and immediately got to work.'
Lulla called one of her trusted fabric vendors, convincing him to open his shop at 11 PM that night. Simultaneously, she mobilised her team of embroiderers to begin preparing borders and fabric detailing, burning the midnight oil. By 8:30 AM the next morning, they had two freshly assembled 13-metre sarees ready on set — just in time for the shoot.

The effort paid off. Aishwarya's look in that scene has since become one of the most talked-about in Bollywood history. Her emotional sprint through the haveli, clad in the cotton Puja saree — with flames licking the fabric — is still remembered as a masterstroke in costume-led storytelling.
About Devdas
Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and based on the 1917 Bengali novel by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay, Devdas starred Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit. The film told the tragic story of Devdas Mukherjee, who descends into self-destruction after being denied his childhood love, Paro.
The film was not just a commercial hit but also swept major awards, including five National Film Awards — one of them for costume design, a nod to the kind of tireless artistry that went into even a single saree.

'We were in Aishwarya Rai's van, looking at outfit around 7 pm after pack-up': Neeta Lulla spills beans on cotton saree in Devdas
The Devdas movie is a gem! Be it the characters, the songs, the emotional scenes, grand mansions, temples, and courtesan halls with intricate detailing, or the heart-wrenching climax, it is one of its kind. The red and shite saree that Aishwarya Rai wore during the climax added more depth to the entire sequence. But did you know that the saree was prepared in just one night? Sanjay Leela Bhansali requested a change in the outfit just hours before the shoot. Neeta Lulla's last-minute preparations for creating a saree Talking to News 18, fashion designer Neeta Lulla recounted her experience working with maestro Bhansali on Devdas. She revealed that the sarees used in the movie were usually 12–14 metres long. Hence, for the red and white climax outfit, she cut two or three sarees to create the entire ensemble. Neeta told the portal, "For the final scene, Sanjay felt he needed a cotton (Durga) Puja saree. We had the saree, and everything was ready. The night before the shoot at Filmistan, we were in Aishwarya's van, looking at the outfit around 7 pm after pack-up. At that moment, Sanjay said his idea was to have the saree's pallu catch fire and felt it wouldn't be long enough." After Sanjay's sudden request, Neeta invested herself in coming up with a solution. She contacted one of her fabric vendors and got his shop open at 11 at night. Meanwhile, she also informed her team, asking them to start working on the borders. "By 8.30 am the next day, we had two 13-metre saris ready on set," revealed Neeta. About Devdas Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, and Aishwarya Rai, Devdas was released in 2002. The love saga also featured Jackie Shroff and Kirron Kher in pivotal roles. Interestingly, the period romantic drama won 5 National awards and also made it to the Cannes Film Festival. He not only dominates playlists but also takes home a staggering ₹ 14 crore for just a two-hour live performance. India's highest-paid singer is none other than Arijit Singh, as per reports. In an interview, singer Rahul Vaidya revealed that Arijit charges ₹ 14 crore for a two-hour stage performance, according to a report by News18. Even without the jaw-dropping fee, Arijit Singh is regarded as one of the most celebrated and loved singers in India. On the global stage too, he stands among the highest-paid artists, having collaborated with international names like Ed Sheeran and Martin Garrix. What makes his success even more remarkable is his humble personality. Arijit continues to lead a grounded and private life despite reaching extraordinary milestones in his career. Choosing to stay away from the limelight, his accomplishments still speak volumes about his influence and talent. His estimated net worth stands at ₹ 414 crore, as per reports. This includes a lavish ₹ 8 crore home in Navi Mumbai and a luxury car collection worth over ₹ 3.4 crore, featuring high-end brands like Range Rover and Mercedes. Yet, despite all the luxury, Arijit's primary residence remains in Jiaganj, Murshidabad, West Bengal. He lives in a modest home with an attached studio and is often seen leading a low-key life, travelling for work mostly. In his hometown, he also runs a low-cost restaurant called Heshel, which reportedly offers meals for just ₹ 40. Apart from his earnings, Arijit also makes a significant income from brand endorsements and collaborations. He has represented global names like Coca-Cola and Samsung. Concerts and live shows form another major part of his income. According to ticket prices for Arijit Singh's concerts in India usually range from ₹ 2,000 to ₹ 80,000, depending on the city, venue, and ticket category. However, prices can go even higher. For instance, at one of his Pune shows, premium lounge tickets were reportedly sold for a massive ₹ 16 lakh. Going international soon, Arijit is set to make history by headlining a concert at London's iconic Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This will be his only European concert in 2025 and will mark the first time an Indian singer headlines a solo show at a major UK stadium. According to the official website, ticket prices started at £210 for general entry and went up to £2,410 for VIP packages. Besides this, Arijit is also breaking digital records. He recently became the most-followed artist on Spotify, crossing 140 million followers, surpassing global stars like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, and Ariana Grande. In India, Arijit's performance fee remains significantly higher than his peers who debuted long before him in the film industry. While AR Rahman reportedly charges ₹ 1–2 crore for a one-hour show, Shreya Ghoshal earns around ₹ 20–25 lakh per concert. Sunidhi Chauhan, on the other hand, is said to earn ₹ 18–20 lakh per song.
