TO spark a love for reading, a book kiosk has been set up at SK Bandar Rinching in Semenyih, Selangor.
The RM75,000 facility was gifted by Eco World Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of Eco World Development Group Bhd (EcoWorld).
Foundation chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said he had witnessed first-hand the teachers and students' enthusiasm for the facility.
Calling it encouraging, Lee expressed certainty that the kiosk would grow into a vibrant hub of learning, curiosity and inspiration.
'We want to make books easily accessible and ensure that reading becomes an enjoyable part of daily life.
'At Eco World Foundation, we believe education is the cornerstone of a better future and every child should have access to tools that help them thrive.
'Reading is one of the most powerful ways to unlock knowledge and opportunity.
'This kiosk is more than just a corporate social responsibility project as it reflects our deep commitment to educational empowerment,' he said at the kiosk handover to SK Bandar Riching headmaster Azril Sham Mohamed.
Also present were EcoWorld president and chief executive officer Datuk Chang Khim Wah and divisional general manager Evon Yap.
The kiosk, funded by Eco Majestic township in Semenyih, is expected to benefit the school's 2,700 pupils.
Construction began in February and was completed by mid-March.
The kiosk will offer pupils, teachers, parents and the wider school community access to diverse reading materials.
To ensure everyone has a chance to enjoy the facility, the kiosk will operate twice a month.
This initiative builds on Eco World Foundation's past support for SK Bandar Rinching.
In December 2023, it donated 150 sets of desks and chairs worth RM25,000, while its Students Aid Programme (SAP) supports 27 underprivileged pupils at the school.
On a broader note, SAP supports some 2,000 students annually at 117 schools nationwide, with essentials including school supplies, uniforms and financial assistance.
To date, 106 students under the SAP have continued on to tertiary education.
Eco World Foundation on a whole undertakes humanitarian projects to mitigate social shortcomings in education and literacy, health and well-being, poverty and lack of community infrastructure throughout the country.

Federal court orders Public Bank to pay RM90 million in damages to NFCorp, four others

Public Bank to pay two per cent interest per annum on the judgment sum from today until the payment of damages is settled 18 Jun 2025 01:46pm Photo by Bernama PUTRAJAYA - The Federal Court today ordered Public Bank Berhad to pay RM90 million in damages to National Feedlot Corporation (NFCorp), its chairman Datuk Mohamad Salleh Ismail, and three subsidiary companies for breach of contract to protect their bank account confidentiality. A three-member bench led by Chief Judge of Malaya Datuk Seri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim, Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli and Federal Court judge Datuk Abu Bakar Jais awarded RM30 million each in equitable, exemplary and aggravated damages. "Public Bank is to pay two per cent interest per annum on the judgment sum from today until the payment of damages is settled,' said Justice Hasnah. In delivering the court's decision, she said the appellants had presented financial reports and audited accounts through an expert witness, which were not challenged by Public Bank. Justice Hasnah said the Court of Appeal erred when it decided that the appellants had failed to prove damages, resulting in an award of only RM10,000 in nominal damages. On May 26, the panel overturned the Court of Appeal earlier decision which had granted nominal damages to NFCorp, Mohamad Salleh and three subsidiaries - National Meat and Livestock Corporation Sdn Bhd, Agroscience Industries Sdn Bhd, and Real Food Company Sdn Bhd. Mohamad Salleh is the husband of former Women, Family and Community Development Minister and Wanita Umno chief Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil. Also on May 26, the Federal Court upheld the decision of the Court of Appeal, which found Public Bank liable for breach of confidentiality. The court ordered Public Bank to pay RM300,000 in legal costs. The court adjourned until today to decide on the amount of damages. NFCorp and four others filed the RM560 million suit against the bank in 2012 over the leakage of their banking details. The High Court dismissed the lawsuit in 2019, but the appellate court in 2023 reversed the decision after allowing their (NFCorp and four others) appeals. However, the Court of Appeal held that since NFCorp and the four others succeeded in proving liability but failed to prove damages, the court decided to award a sum of RM10,000 in nominal damages. In the suit, NFCorp and four others claimed that the bank breached confidentiality by allowing details of banking transactions to be revealed by the then PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli. They also claimed their business reputation and credibility suffered irreparable loss and damage as a result of the breach under the Banking and Financial Institutions Act. After the court proceedings, Mohamad Salleh expressed gratitude, saying his family endured hardship for 13 years due to the case. In today's proceeding, Lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah represented NFCorp and the four others, while Public Bank was represented by lawyer Chan Kok Keong. - BERNAMA More Like This

JS-SEZ key to Johor's rise as regional innovation and investment hub

Johor Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Lee Ting Han ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) is emerging as a cornerstone of Johor's transformation into a next-generation regional powerhouse, with the state offering a compelling value proposition to global investors in artificial intelligence (AI), data centres and high-value industries. Johor Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Lee Ting Han said the JS-SEZ, developed in close collaboration with Malaysia's federal government and Singaporean counterparts, aims to harmonise cross-border regulations, unlock trade flows and ease talent mobility between the two countries. "This zone will make Johor even more competitive and connected,' he said during closing remarks on the first day of the Nikkei Forum Medini 2025 here today. He emphasised that Johor is not a passive recipient of federal or foreign policy, but an active agent shaping regional growth through coherent, long-term strategies rooted in clarity, consistency and capacity. At the heart of this transformation is Medini, a flagship smart city that Lee described as a "public-private innovation lab', attracting more than RM13 billion in cumulative investments to date in sectors such as healthcare, education, business services and smart infrastructure. "Medini is more than just real estate, it's a collaborative innovation platform. Now is the time to shift from dialogue to action through MoUs, pilot projects, and enduring partnerships,' he said. Lee urged policymakers and institutions to recognise that sustainable, digital nation-building depends on integrated action across technology, energy, environmental, social and governance (ESG) frameworks. "What we've built today reflects on the need for cross-sector coherence. Let us now move from consensus to execution,' he added. Lee noted that Johor is undergoing a fundamental shift from a traditional industrial base into a next-generation economic powerhouse, driven by policy innovation, infrastructure readiness and investor confidence. The two-day Nikkei Forum Medini 2025 forms part of broader efforts to position Johor as a regional innovation hub, supporting the JS-SEZ initiative to attract high-quality investments and integrate value chains between Malaysia and Singapore. - Bernama
