The Red Devils arrive to rock Bukit Jalil

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's favourite EPL club, Manchester United, are back here after 16 years. How does it feel to be at Bukit Jalil? Timesport's Farah Azharie and Faizal Salim take readers to the National Stadium.
Fans from Limbang to Kajang and across Malaysia are turning the stadium into a sea of red in Manchester United's friendly match against the Asean All Stars.
The organisers said a total of 62,000 tickets had been sold for the match until Tuesday, while Cheras District Police Chief ACP Aidil Bolhassan said about 70,000 fans were expected to attend the match.
Excited fans start arriving at the stadium as early as 3pm. Despite the searing 33 degrees Celsius weather, it has done little to dampen the spirits of the fans who patiently wait at the stadium gates to open at 5pm.
Farhan Izhar, 40, from Kajang, was a bachelor when he attended United's matches here in 2009. Now married with four children, he is watching the Red Devils again today.
"I bring my family along because I want them to experience the atmosphere when United come to Malaysia," says Farhan, who is accompanied by his wife, Rubiena Awg Amin (41), and four children, Riffat (12), Raqeeb (10), Raneea (9) and Railene (6).
Meanwhile as soon as friends Frederick Lalung (51), Roger Samuel Meripa (42) heard that United were coming to Malaysia, they immediately planned their travel from Limbang, Sarawak.
"We are diehard United fans, no matter what the results are, we will always stand behind our club," says Frederick.
As of 6.15pm, the talked about sea of red expected at the stadium is yet to materialise. Despite claims of 70,000 tickets sold earlier in the day, only a trickle of fans have arrived to take their seats.
With pre-match rehearsals still in full swing and kickoff set for 8.45pm, fans appear to be arriving, typically, late.
As the Manchester United stars arrive and make their way into the stadium, captain Bruno Fernandes and midfielder Manuel Ugarte look to be in high spirits. With wide smiles, they acknowledge the media gathered at the mixed zone.
However, the rest of the United squad appear locked in their own worlds. Alejandro Garnacho walks through with oversized sunglasses and earphones.
Asean All Stars captain Sergio Aguero is all smiles, greeting everyone along the route to the dressing room.
As of 7.30pm, fans continue to pour into the stadium, with seats being rapidly taken up.
In comparison, the Malaysia Cup final between Johor Darul Ta'zim and Sri Pahang last month drew a crowd of 56,000. Tickets for that match were priced from RM50 to RM200. Tickets for the Manchester United match today is from RM50 to RM1,500.

Cristiano Ronaldo set to stay at Al-Nassr

(Photo by Alexandra BEIER / AFP) MUNICH - Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly ended speculation about his club future, saying he will continue to play at Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr, German Press Agency (dpa) reported. "Nothing is going to change. Playing at Al-Nassr? Yes," he was quoted as saying early Monday by multiple reports after captaining Portugal to the Nations League title in Munich. (Photo by Alexandra BEIER / AFP) Ronaldo, 40, joined Al-Nassr in 2023 after falling out with coach Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. His current contract is until June 30. FIFA president Gianni Infantino had recently suggested that Ronaldo could move to a side qualified for the upcoming Club World Cup. Ronaldo on Saturday confirmed talks but said he won't be at the tournament in the United States. On Sunday, Portugal beat Spain 5-3 on penalties to give Ronaldo and his team a third trophy, the others being at Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League. "I have many titles but there is nothing better than winning with the national team," the five-time Ballon d'Or winner said. Ronaldo scored the 2-2 equaliser in the 61st minute, which eventually set up the shoot-out, but came off in the 88th with an apparent thigh problem. He had also scored the 2-1 winner in Wednesday's semi-final. The two goals against Germany and Spain brought his tally to 138, from 221 caps, which are both world records in the men's game. Coach Robert Martinez said that Ronaldo had played a "decisive role" in winning the title, after some had expressed scepticism whether the veteran still had a lot to give. - BERNAMA-dpa More Like This

Only a good result will Do for Duy Manh

Do Duy Manh. - Duy Manh's Facebook PETALING JAYA: Centreback and senior figure Do Duy Manh is ready to sizzle again at Malaysia's iconic Bukit Jalil Stadium. The 28-year-old will be one of Vietnam's solid star defenders when they face off with Malaysia in the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifier today. Duy Manh was at the same venue two weeks ago when the Asean All-Stars took on Manchester United in the Maybank Challenge Cup, which they eventually won. "This is the most important game in this qualifying campaign," said Duy Manh. "It's an away game, so it will be difficult, but we have prepared well. We trust coach Kim (Sang-sik) and we'll follow his instructions." Duy Manh has also played here during the 2018 AFF Cup final and knows what to expect from the team and fans. "It's a big stadium, always full, and we know how the atmosphere will be. This is Malaysia's favourite ground. But for 90 minutes, we will remain focused and overcome the pressure." With everything on the line, Vietnam are approaching the battle with caution, clarity and quiet confidence.

Influx of fresh blood for Malaysia keeps Vietnam coach on guard

Coach Kim Sang-sik (right) KUALA LUMPUR: The Vietnam football squad know the significance of their next battle against a new-look Malaysia in the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifier and they are not leaving anything to chance. Vietnam coach Kim Sang-sik is aware of the five new mixed-heritage players in the Harimau Malaya squad as they prepare for the match at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil here on Tuesday (June 10). Sang-sik has called on his side to stay united and focused. He also acknowledged the hurdles in their path but insisted that with belief and hard work, they can make a difference. "This is the most important and difficult game in our quest to advance to the Asian Cup," said the South Korean during a pre-match press conference at the National Stadium on Monday (June 9). "We want to play as a unit and aim for points." Sang-sik admits that the Golden Dragons' preparations have been complicated by the influx of fresh blood for Malaysia. "It makes it difficult for us. We do not have much information on some of these players, but we'll assess our squad and prepare based on our plan," he said. "Football is always difficult, whether we have the information or not. The results depend on us." Despite the pressure of the occasion and the hostile atmosphere awaiting them in Bukit Jalil, Sang-sik was unfazed. "I'm a positive person, so pressure is not what I think about. The aim is the effort on the field and yes, to continue our good run against Malaysia." Sang-sik and some of his players had their confidence boosted when they featured for the Asean All-Stars in the 1-0 win over Premier League giants Manchester United in a recent friendly. Sang-sik, who was coach of the Asean All-Stars, said: "We were lucky to win because United struggled with the travelling and weather. But I'm satisfied. It was a great chance to show Southeast Asian players can move abroad and develop globally."
