Two female king penguins join Bourton-on-the Water wildlife park

BBC News18-02-2025

A wildlife park has welcomed two new females to its colony of king penguins in a bid to boost its breeding programme. The females, who have yet to be named, arrived at Birdland Park and Gardens in Bourton-on-the-Water in the Cotswolds last week. The pair hatched in Wuppertal, Germany, in 2021 and 2023 and are believed to be the first female king penguins to be imported to the UK in 15 years. Staff learned in December that a supposed female called Maggie, who joined the park eight years ago, was in fact a male who has since been renamed Magnus.
The discovery meant that for many years the park has had just one female, named Bill.Until the latest additions to the park arrived, Bill was also the only female King Penguin in the UK.She is 10 years older than she would live to in the wild. Head keeper Alistair Keen said: "We've not had a [king penguin] egg at Birdland for three years, and we've had no breeding success for nearly a decade now. "The fact we now have two young females who could potentially be breeding for another 10 to 15 years is absolutely massive for us and the breeding programme across Europe."
The new penguins have joined the park as part of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria Ex-situ Programme. The programme aims to ensure a healthy and viable captive population of more than 500 endangered and threatened species is maintained in the long term."There was so much paper work to complete - jumping through various hoops and making phone calls and emails at all times of day," Mr Keen said. "It was a day-and-a-half for them to travel by road from Germany but they are feeding great, they are looking great so we just can't wait to get them out and meeting the boys." The pair will now go through a period of quarantine before they join the rest of the colony.

10 players Rangers could look sign if Russell Martin is appointed as manager at Ibrox

4 . Cameron Archer - Southampton The ex-Aston Villa academy starlet cost Southampton a reported fee of £15million when he signed in 2024, but he struggled for regular game time at St Mary's last year following the departure of Martin. Linked with a loan move to Leeds United in January, Archer is another who has spoken highly of Martin's management style, saying he "was one of the main reasons" he joined Southampton last summer, adding that his playing style, coaching and ability to improve him as a player as the key factors behind his decision to move. Dunfermline boss Neil Lennon on 3 key qualities former team-mate Steven Pressley will bring to Dundee FC

Neil Lennon has tipped former Celtic team-mate Steven Pressley to bring an exciting brand of football to Dundee. Pressley's shock appointment as Dark Blues head coach this week – following the sacking of Tony Docherty last month – prompted fan fury. But Dunfermline boss Lennon reckons the ex-Scotland stopper's four-year spell as head of individual player development at English Premier League outfit Brentford will serve him well at Dens Park. He said: '[Pressley] is a good coach. He's worked with Brentford for a long time, with the players underneath the first-team. 'So, that's a vast experience to have. 'Obviously, he'll have contacts as well, good contacts in the game. 'And he'll bring a brand of football that I think people will want to see. 'He's intelligent, believe it or not! I think he's a very good coach. I think it's a really good appointment.' The pair shared a dressing room at Parkhead during Dundee technical director Gordon Strachan's time in the Hoops hotseat. Lennon added: 'Look, he [Pressley] has been out of the game, he's hungry. I think he'll want to make a statement. 'Obviously, Gordon knows him very well from his time at Celtic as well. 'I think he's got a good presence and a good way about him, Steven. So, I wish him well.'

Neil Lennon reveals latest on talks with Victor Wanyama over Dunfermline Athletic extension

Neil Lennon remains convinced Victor Wanyama could be a 'real asset' for Dunfermline. And the Pars boss has refused to rule out a return to East End Park for the Kenya internationalist this summer. The former Celtic and Spurs midfielder saw out last season with the Fifers, who subsequently reported he was one of the players with whom 'dialogue remains ongoing'. With Charlie Gilmour having been recruited on a three-year deal, Chris Hamilton having penned a contract extension and Tashan Oakley-Boothe set to re-sign, Dunfermline appear well served in midfield. However, Lennon has left the door open for Wanyama – who turns 34 later this month and shares a birthday with his ex-Celtic boss – to stay on with the Championship hopefuls for next season. 'Possibly, yeah, possibly,' said Lennon when asked whether Wanyama could sign again. 'I don't know yet. 'Once he got fit, he looked great and he played really well in the last game [against Morton]. 'If he had a good pre-season, he could be a real asset for us.' Wanyama was unveiled as a new recruit to great fanfare just days after Lennon's appointment as boss in March. However, it soon became clear that, without a competitive outing with previous club CF Montréal for eight months, the 33-year-old was well short of match fitness. And his debut in the 3-0 defeat to Ayr United ended in embarrassing fashion when he was shown a straight red card for handling the ball on the ground after a slip. 'We had a chuckle about it,' added Lennon. 'I was going to say, we've all done that, but I never did that!' Wanyama recently spoke of his love for Scotland and his connection to Lennon, who signed the midfielder for Celtic in 2011 before selling him to Southampton two years later for a reported £12.5 million. The African insisted he would be 'happy' to re-sign for Dunfermline. However, with talks on-going, Lennon has revealed the reason his former protégé asked to be excused international duty with Kenya for two forthcoming friendlies against Chad. 'He's doing his coaching barges,' explained Lennon. 'He's actually doing them in Belfast, I think, with the IFA. 'That's another one he wants to add to his resumé, the coaching side of things as well. 'So maybe there might be something there for him going forward.'
