Marching into April with another chance for severe weather
LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The chance for severe weather will return to the Central and Eastern portions of the United States, affecting just under 92 million people, including us in Mid-Michigan.
The Storm Prediction Center has areas along and south of I-96 in an Enhanced Level 3 of 5 Risk for strong to severe storms.
A Level 2 risk is in place for Montcalm and Gratiot Counties, extending down through portions of Ionia, Clinton, and Shiawassee Counties.
All hazards appear to be in play with this next system. The biggest concern will be the potential for strong, damaging winds at or above 75 miles per hour. In addition, we also have an elevated risk for large hail and an isolated tornado or two.
Our storm system will begin to move into the region overnight, bringing the chance for a few snow flurries.
A warm front will begin to lift through the region Wednesday morning, with showers and non-severe thunderstorms possible. Our chance for severe weather will increase around 4 pm Wednesday and continue until about midnight.
There are still questions about how much the atmosphere will be able to recover after our first round of precipitation on Wednesday morning.
If we can develop enough instability Wednesday evening, it would support the threat of strong damaging winds, large hail, and an isolated tornado or two. However, if we can not develop this instability, our severe weather potential will decrease across the region.

More sunshine expected Sunday
More sunshine Sunday Dry start of the week Warming up by Wednesday We've held on to mostly clear skies overnight leaving temperatures in the lower 60s and even upper 50s to start out this morning. Winds are light out of the north at 5 mph. Breezes are expected to pick up through the afternoon. Highs will top out in the lower 80s to wrap up the weekend with plenty of sunshine throughout the day. By late afternoon, a line of thunderstorms is expected to develop over Topeka as a cold front moves through. A few of these storms could become strong to severe, with the greatest risk located southeast of Topeka. Most areas will stay dry Sunday with just a few passing clouds possible. Storm Team 3: Weather Aware Days Today & Monday
Today is another due to the possibility of strong to severe storms this afternoon and evening. It's still staying hot and humid today ahead of storms with highs in the low 90s and heat index values in the triple digits. This brings extra energy to help fuel storms today. Storms look to approach from the west right around lunchtime and continue to move through the area through the evening. The main threats for today include damaging and gusty winds, heavy rain, and isolated hail. The tornado risk is not completely zero at this time. Monday is also a due to strong to severe storms. The lunchtime through evening timeframe looks to remain the same for storms tomorrow, although our threats will be slightly different. There is a higher risk of a quick spin up with tomorrow's storms along with gusty and damaging winds and heavy rain. It is possible that this severe storm risk will continue this upcoming work week as temperatures stay in the 90s and heat index values stay in or very close to the triple digits allowing extra energy to fuel storms. The Storm Team 11 forecast calls for a 60% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms for Sunday. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible through the late afternoon and evening, with the primary threat being damaging winds. The high will be 82 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. A passing shower or thunderstorm is possible tonight, with a low of 62 degrees. Areas of patchy fog will develop late for some. Monday will be mostly cloudy with a 30% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. The high will be 83 degrees. A better threat for scattered strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible Monday evening, especially for our western counties. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue Monday night with a low of 63 degrees. Tuesday will be partly cloudy and mild with a high of 81 degrees. Mostly clear skies are expected Tuesday night with a low of 58 degrees. Skies will be partly cloudy on Wednesday with a high of 84 degrees.
