Club World Cup 2025: Boca Juniors get Ayrton Costa boost after defender gets special U.S. visa following initial refusal
Boca Juniors defender Ayrton Costa has been granted a special United States visa after the footballer had previously rejected his application, the Argentine club announced on Friday. That means, Costa will be available at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 for Boca Juniors, hosted by the United States, starting on June 14.
Costa's visa application was initially rejected by the U.S. immigration officials after the defender was subject to a criminal complaint, related to an aggravated robbery in 2018. But the footballed accepted probationary sentence in 2023 to avoid any trial.
'Ayrton Costa has been granted a 26-day special visa,' a Boca Juniors spokesperson told Reuters. Initially, the U.S. immigration officials had ruled out that Costa would not be allowed into the country as he is still serving his sentence.
Earlier, the left-footed defender had given three interviews at the embassy before being denied a visa. However, Costa's case is believed to have been considered after the club appealed to FIFA.
The 24-year-old Costa joined Boca Juniors earlier in 2024 from Belgium's Royal Antwerp for a fee close to USD 3.5 million. In his first season with the Argentine club, Costa made a solid impression, thus making him one of the key plyers in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
Boca Juniors have been named in Group C in the league stage with the likes of Portuguese side Benfica, Germany's Bayern Munich and Auckland City from New Zealand. Boca Juniors open their FIFA Club World Cup 2025 campaign against Benfica (June 17), followed by matches against Bayern Munich (June 21) and Auckland City (June 25).

FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Special transfer window and updated player rules
The highly anticipated FIFA Club World Cup 2025 will feature an expanded format with 32 elite clubs from across the globe, marking a historic step in the competition's evolution. In preparation for this milestone event, FIFA has introduced special measures regarding player registration and transfers to ensure all clubs can compete on a level playing field. Special Transfer Window: 1–10 June 2025 To support the unique structure of this year's tournament, FIFA had approved an exceptional transfer window from June 1 to June 10, 2025. This temporary registration period applies to all 20 member associations whose clubs are participating in the tournament. During this window, clubs are allowed to sign and register new players exclusively for the FIFA Club World Cup. This move is intended to overcome the challenges created by the varying domestic calendars and registration periods of clubs from different countries. By standardizing this brief window, FIFA ensures every team has the opportunity to field its most competitive lineup. Deadline for Final Squad Submission Participating clubs must submit their final squad lists by June 10, 2025. This deadline ensures that all new player registrations, including those made during the special window, are finalized ahead of the tournament's start. The goal is to allow clubs flexibility while maintaining organizational consistency across all participating nations. Mid-Tournament Changes Allowed: June 27–July 3 In addition to the special window, FIFA has also allowed a restricted in-competition registration period from June 27 to July 3, 2025. During this time, clubs can replace or add players under specific conditions. One key requirement is that the club's national transfer window must still be open. This provision helps accommodate situations where player contracts expire during the tournament or unforeseen circumstances arise. Loan and Registration Rules While these temporary windows offer more flexibility, FIFA's standard loan and registration regulations still apply. Clubs must adhere to the rules outlined in the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP). For example: There are no exceptions to the number of players loaned in or out. A player can be registered on loan for the Club World Cup if it complies with FIFA and local association rules.

He Posted 'Thank You' Note On Social Media For UK Trip, Died In Crash
He announced he is going to the UK and thanked his wife, friends and family in a Facebook post at 1.17 pm on Thursday. Next, he called his brother from the plane at 1:27 pm. A few minutes later, the Air India plane took off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport for London's Gatwick Airport but crashed seconds later into a building and burst into flames at 1:39 pm, in one of the worst aviation disasters the country has seen. Badruddin Halani, of a renowned business family from Gujarat's Anand, was one among the 241 people on the plane who died in the crash. The plane was carrying 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, one Canadian. There were 12 crew members. The Aviation Ministry said that the last words of the doomed Air India flight AI-171 radioed by the cockpit crew were a desperate "Mayday, Mayday", moments before the crash. Only one person - Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old businessman based in the UK - survived in the accident. Badruddin Halani, travelling with his wife Yasmin and sister-in-law Malek, was headed to London to spend time with his grandchildren. He had also planned to go to the US to raise funds for RSS-affiliated Sainik School in Silvasa, his dream project. "He (Badruddin) was dedicated to social service. The Sainik School in Silvasa was his dream project. He was also an emotional grandfather who wanted to spend time with his grandchildren in London," Rajubhai Halani, brother of Badruddin, told NDTV. The brother also spoke about Badruddin's association with Vijay Rupani, former Chief Minister of Gujarat, who was also on the same flight. As many of the bodies are burnt beyond recognition or damaged otherwise, authorities are carrying out DNA tests to establish the identity of the victims of Thursday's horrific tragedy. Asim Halani, son of Badruddin, landed yesterday in Ahmedabad and reached the hospital for DNA profiling, the first step in getting back the body of his father. "Both my daughters were very much excited as their grandparents were coming to London. They made greeting cards for them. Now whom will they give the cards? It is a very difficult situation in our family," Asim Halani told NDTV. Junior Halani recounted the loving nature of his father and how he wanted his daughters to experience the same. "I too have fond memories of my childhood. My father (Badruddin) never scolded me. If I asked for a toy, he would bring multiple. I wanted similar love and affection to be experienced by my daughters. I still remember when my elder daughter was born here, he (Badruddin) used to carry her on his shoulder and walk around," he said, fighting back tears.
