Irish parliamentarian Paul Murphy was detained in Cairo after attempting to retrieve his phone, which was confiscated during a march to the Rafah crossing into Gaza.
Murphy, along with other Irish citizens, was initially detained on Friday while participating in a demonstration to deliver aid to Gaza.
After being released from initial detention, Murphy went to a Cairo police station on the advice of the Irish embassy to retrieve his phone, but his passport was taken, and he was prevented from leaving.
Murphy's partner, Jess Spear, has urged Irish Deputy Premier Simon Harris to intervene and ensure the release of Murphy and other participants in the Global March to Gaza.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed they are providing consular assistance in this case, as the Global March to Gaza aims to deliver humanitarian aid and increase pressure to unblock vital supplies to the besieged region amid the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

BREAKING NEWS Donald Trump CANCELS his meeting with Anthony Albanese

Donald Trump is set to cancel his meeting with Anthony Albanese which is scheduled tomorrow as he leaves the G7 early. 'President Trump had a great day at the G7, even signing a major trade deal with the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer,' Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said. 'Much was accomplished, but because of what's going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State.'

There should be no equivocation over Israel's right to neutralise Iran

SIR – Israel is dealing with an existential threat from a country controlled by a dictatorship of extreme religious leaders who are intent on bringing about the destruction of the Jewish state and its people (Letters, June 16). Iran has been developing a nuclear capability obviously designed to achieve this ambition. At the same time, it runs and supports a number of terrorist organisations that have been causing death and destruction in the Middle East. Yet despite all this, our Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary have appeared reluctant to take sides in this matter. What is wrong with them? Colonel Mark Rayner (retd) Eastbourne, East Sussex SIR – Those who have been condemning Israel's actions need to ask themselves a simple question ('Protesters march through London waving Iranian flags', report, June 15). Would they prefer Iran to be able to produce nuclear weapons – and then have to deal with the results? Tim Pope Weybridge, Surrey SIR – Israel's strikes and covert activities against the country responsible for so much evil around the globe have demonstrated its military superiority. The free world owes the Israelis a debt of gratitude. Hannah Hunt Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire SIR – Israel is the only true democracy in the Middle East, surrounded by hostile actors and countries that want to wipe it off the map. Western nations should applaud its fight, and its efforts to restrict Iran's nuclear capabilities. Many of Iran's suppressed citizens would also like a change in their country's leadership, so they can live freer and better lives. The world is reaching a pivotal moment in the Middle East (as well as in Ukraine). This is no time for Europe, or any Western nation, to sit on the fence. Christopher Hunt Swanley, Kent SIR – Iranians living in Britain – along with many in Iran – are praying for the downfall of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In 1979, many Iranians were praying for the downfall of the repressive Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran. But what good did it do them when he was kicked out? Sadly, taking out a repressive regime does not ensure good government in the future. Gerald Heath Box, Wiltshire SIR – I have been following the coverage of the Iranian attacks on Tel Aviv. My mind then turned to Britain. We have no iron dome, no bomb shelters and not enough fighter jets. When will our Government wake up? Angela Miller Wolverhampton

BREAKING NEWS Trump gives terrifying warning to Iranians: 'Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!'

President Donald Trump delivered a terrifying warning to Iranians amid Israel 's recent bombing of Iran. 'Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!' the U.S. president wrote in a Truth Social post, as he attended the G7 Summit in Canada. Trump again pushed that the Iranian regime should have made a nuclear deal with him. 'Iran should have signed the 'deal' I told them to sign. What a shame, and waste of human life. Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again!' Trump wrote. The president was most recently in a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer amid his first full day at the G7. At the top of that meeting, Trump expressed that he believed a Iranian nuclear deal could still be signed. 'Israel is doing very well, as you probably know. And I gave Iran 60 days, and they said, well, at the 61st you saw what happened. Day 61. So I'm in constant touch. And as I've been saying, I think a deal will be signed, or something will happen, but a deal will be signed. And I think Iran is foolish not to sign,' Trump said. Asked if he would travel to the Middle East for any peace talks, Trump responded: 'I think we're doing pretty well. We're talking. We have a thing called the telephone.'
