Canadiens: Caufield Praises St-Louis
Montreal Canadiens sniper Cole Caufield was interviewed on Montreal radio station BPM Sports this morning. Many topics were discussed, but what stood out for me was how he spoke about his coach, Martin St-Louis.
Asked where his current coach ranks amongst all the coaches he's had in his life, Caufield said:
You know, probably one, I think. It doesn't get much better than that. Obviously looking up to a guy like that growing up and then getting to see how he guides you and teaches you. He's probably different than many coaches, but I think he gets a lot out of his players; he's well-respected, and the practices are fun, too.

When Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton decided to hire St-Louis, a man who had never been a bench boss in the NHL, some believed he'd just be around to finish the season. Then they changed their tune to 'he won't be there when this team is ready to make the playoffs' after he was signed to a three-year contract. The Canadiens are battling hard for a ticket to the Spring dance, and the Hall of Famer is still leading his players after the Habs exercised their two-year option to extend the coach.

A coach who has never played in the NHL and is a career coach might have had trouble getting respect from his players, but it's impossible for his players not to respect St-Louis. He's been in their skates and has lived their dream up to the ultimate goal.
Unlike old-school coaches, he's well-equipped to coach today's players. He doesn't have a 'you're going to do what I tell you to do, and that's that' approach. He doesn't mind explaining to his players why he's asking them to play a certain way. He doesn't run a dictatorship; he runs a nurturing environment in which everyone can learn, regardless of age.
Earlier this week, St-Louis also told the press that it's very easy, to be honest with players and to 'tell them your truth,' another characteristic of his that Caufield said was appreciated, especially in a business where there's always a younger guy ready to step up and take your spot.
There's no better example of St-Louis' ability to coach than how he got Josh Anderson to embrace his new role on the team and how successful he is. If you ask me, St-Louis is there for the long haul, and he's told the media in the past he'd do anything to get the Canadiens, his dad's favorite team, a 25th Stanley Cup. It won't be this year, but the coach showed in his playing career that he's not one to give up, and that hasn't changed.
The Canadiens have a day off today but they'll be back in action on Saturday night as they'll welcome the Colorado Avalanche at the Bell Centre in another must-win tilt.

Saturday's Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final rematch between the Panthers and Edmonton Oilers could be the pivotal game of this series. TV game time is 8 p.m. on TNT, truTV, HBO Max as well as streaming outlets. ▪ What's at stake: The winner gets a 3-2 series lead in the best-of-7 series and will have the opportunity to win the Stanley Cup in Sunrise during Tuesday's Game 6. Since the 1967 expansion from the NHL's six-team era, when a Stanley Cup Final is tied 2-2, the Game 5 winner also won the series 11 of 16 times. ▪ Advice for fans: Keep the cafetera ready to make some cafe Cubano for yourself or your watch party. Three of the four games have gone into overtime, two after tying goals in the last 20 seconds of regulation. ▪ Key question for Edmonton: Will Calvin Pickard start in goal after Stuart Skinner got yanked in Games 3 and 4? In both cases, Skinner didn't play badly. In fact, he did well to not give up more goals while the Oilers, by their own admission, flat stunk in front of him. But, Pickard's 7-0 in these playoffs with a better goals against average (2.69) and save percentage (.896) compared to Skinner (2.99, .891) and only lost his job to injury in the second round. ▪ Key question for the Panthers: Did blowing a 3-0 lead and losing Game 4 in overtime shake the psychological equilibrium that's allowed them to surf successfully the wins and wipeouts over the last three years of NHL playoffs and make three Stanley Cup Finals. ▪ Key question for both teams: Can they keep up this series' breathless pace after a a 2,500-mile flight sucks up the lone off day before Game 5? Both coaches, who have been in Stanley Cup Finals before and in hockey their whole lives, remarked on the pace, physicality, the quality of hockey from board battles to open ice skill plays. 'I think [experience and conditioning] all those play a factor, but there's an excitement for both teams that will build as you get toward the end. It's a grinder,' Panthers coach Paul Maurice said. 'So, you actually find more energy toward the end of a series because there's not another one after this.'

‘My heart!' Inside Travis and Taylor's exciting date night at Stanley Cup final
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce sightings in South Florida are becoming as common as pileups on the Palmetto Expressway these days. On Thursday night, the duo du jour was photographed watching Game 4 of the NHL's Stanley Cup Finals between the Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise. We think we know which team they were rooting for: Both rocked complementary Panthers colors, with Kelce wearing a red sweatshirt and shorts and Swift in a safari style tan getup and Panthers-coded red lipstick. One Traylor fan's X account shared a video of the two sitting in their seats in a VIP suite. Swift is drinking something out of a straw, and Kelce is captivated by something on his phone, which he then shares with his girlfriend, who mouths 'Wow.' The caption: 'These two.' Someone else caught a quick PDA session between them, writing, 'Stop it.' In the past few weeks, Swift and Kelce, both 35, have been spotted dining out twice in the Palm Beach area, freaking out fellow diners. But Thursday's sighting wasn't that much of a shock. Hours before, a few sports reporters like The Athletic's Chris Johnston tipped off the Internet that the tight end and pop star were attending the game. We hear they arrived via helicopter and were ushered to a private entrance. Forget football. We think Swift may be turning into a diehard hockey fan. At one point during the nail biter, when the Panthers tied the game with 19.5 seconds left in regulation, the hitmaker is seen patting her chest. Looking excited and nervous, she tells Kelce, 'My heart...!' (Note: that tying goal was scored by Panther Sam Reinhart, who wears no. 13, which cannot possibly be a random accident because every Swiftie knows 13 is the star's lucky number.) The game ended with an Edmonton victory of 5-4 in overtime, tying the series at 2-2, and sending the teams back to Canada for game 5. We're thinking Swift and Kelce, who is renting a luxury condo during the off season in Boca Raton to train, may want to watch that one from home. Flyers Mock Draft: Expert Predicts Philly's Best-Case Scenario
The Flyers could end up with arguably the most talented forward in the draft class. (Photo: Eric Canha, Imagn Images) The Philadelphia Flyers still hold the sixth pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, but this expert's latest mock draft says that's not such a bad thing after all. Much of the dialogue to this point has centered around which players the Flyers are interested in, where those players will fall in the draft, and which teams are jockeying for their services. Advertisement Philadelphia figures to be one of the teams most locked onto a center, even despite their public comments regarding their willingness to take a winger or a defender. Fortunately for the Flyers, momentum is starting to pick up around the fall of one of the very best centers in the draft class in James Hagens. In his latest mock draft for The Athletic, prospects expert Scott Wheeler predicts Hagens will fall right into the Flyers' laps at No. 6, with Matthew Schaefer, Michael Misa, Anton Frondell, Caleb Desnoyers, and Porter Martone getting drafted ahead of him. "If Hagens gets here, I think the Flyers like him and would consider taking him. Same goes for Desnoyers, whose well-rounded game and smarts could really support and complement Matvei Michkov. But Desnoyers isn't going to be there," Wheeler wrote. "If Hagens isn't, I think they lean [Brady Martin] over Jake O'Brien here in terms of the other centers (though they did take O'Brien to dinner in Buffalo). The pull of a center, and a player like Martin, is real in this range." Advertisement The Utah Mammoth, who pick fourth, are said to be high on Martin as well and could consider taking him inside the top five. Perhaps Utah and Philadelphia are playing a game of chicken with the draft's most violent forward prospect. Such is life as a team with three first-round picks in the 2025 NHL Draft. That said, Hagens is an undeniable talent who continues to draw comparisons to New Jersey Devils superstar Jack Hughes, who's already come within one point of a 100-point season early in his NHL career. Advertisement Pairing the 18-year-old Boston College talisman with Matvei Michkov will set the Flyers up for offensive success for two decades, and the remainder of the grueling rebuild would then center on adding cornerstone pieces around those two. Defenseman Jackson Smith, a potential top-10 pick, could be a trade-up candidate for the Flyers if management and scouts think he can be one of those pieces. On the right side of the defense, the Flyers have Jamie Drysdale, Oliver Bonk, Spencer Gill, and Helge Grans, so they have no need to force an early pick at this position. Plus, who knows what the future holds for Rasmus Ristolainen? Wheeler had other surprises in store for the Flyers in his latest mock draft (be sure to check those out), but landing Hagens would assuredly be the best-case scenario for the Flyers, who finished higher in the standings than many fans would have liked on the heels of that dreary ending to the 2024-25 season.
