Wake Forest baseball coach Tom Walter apologizes for using homophobic slur
Wake Forest baseball coach Tom Walter used a homophobic slur during the Demon Deacons' elimination game on Monday against the Tennessee Volunteers, a moment which was caught on camera by ESPN's broadcast and prompted an apology from Walter and the school on Tuesday.
Walter was standing on the dugout step when he appeared to say an expletive, followed by the slur. At the time, Tennessee first baseman Andrew Fischer was batting, although it is unclear at whom the slur was directed. Fischer homered and Tennessee won the game 11-5 to advance to the Super Regionals. Wake Forest's season ended with the loss.

'I am very sorry for my outburst in frustration last night and I recognize the hurt and disappointment it has caused,' Walter said in a statement issued by Wake Forest on Tuesday. 'I have seen the videos and while I do not remember the specific moment clearly, that language doesn't reflect my values or the standards of this program. Regardless, I own the consequences and I apologize to the University of Tennessee, to Wake Forest University, and the SEC & ACC.'
In the same statement, Wake Forest vice president & director of athletics John Currie said: 'I am both surprised and deeply disappointed in our head baseball coach Tom Walter for his outburst during last night's baseball game. I feel badly for those most hurt by such words. I spoke with Coach Walter immediately after the game and again this morning to address this incident, which is completely out of character for him and does not meet the standards of Wake Forest Athletics, Wake Forest University or the Atlantic Coast Conference.'
The NCAA's Office of Inclusion and Wake Forest's LGBTQ Center did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Walter's apology came a day after Florida baseball coach Kevin O'Sullivan and athletic director Scott Stricklin apologized for an expletive-filled tirade O'Sullivan directed at NCAA Tournament site officials because he was unhappy that the start of the Gators' game against East Carolina on Sunday was moved back.

Tony's Take Perfection Comparisons The Butcher Broken Record
By Tony Duckworth, tonyduckworthsr@ Perfection. 59 – 0 is the best baseball record in the history of college baseball. History didn't happen in the SEC or Big Ten. Historical runs don't happen often, so let's celebrate a small university who accomplished the unthinkable. Advertisement While you may have never heard of LSU Shreveport, the Pilots recently won the 2025 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Championship. For the record, this was the 68th Annual NAIA Baseball National Championship. LSUS won the championship game 13 – 7. In storybook fashion, the Pilots overcame a 7 – 6 deficit in the bottom of the 5th. How impressive is it that the squad embraced the pressure of the moment and kept this remarkable streak alive to win the hardware? Go Pilots! Comparisons. The most successful seasons in college baseball history include the 2019 Vanderbilt team (59-12), the 1975 Texas team (59-6), and the 1995 Cal State Fullerton team (57-9). Other notable seasons include the 2011 South Carolina team (55-14), the 1978 USC team (54-9), and the 1983 Texas team (66-14). 66 wins will never happen again, but that season didn't top the 59-0 LSUS season. It does make you wonder how many classes the 1983 team attended given they played 80 games. This was well before remote learning options. Gotta love it. Dynasty. One of the newest members of the SEC achieve dynasty status several season ago. While they have been eliminated from winning the 2025 national championship, the Oklahoma Sooner's recent successes under Patty Gasso are remarkable. Advertisement OU has won eight national championships including four in a row between 2021 – 2024. While the Sooners have taken advantage of playing in front of a home crowd, no one will argue the remarkable run they are on. The college softball world series has been played in Oklahoma City since 1990. The standard of excellence of winning four naty's in a row is the best in college softball history. The Butcher. As the AD at Northeastern State University, I told my Senior Associate AD my feelings following meetings with one of our highly successful head coaches. My right-hand man heard me say on more than one occasion that Coach ____ better be glad he wins at a high level. Meaning, this coach's on-the-field success kept me from moving in a different direction. The New York Knicks have been irrelevant for a quarter of a century until the arrival of Tom Thibodeau. The Butcher led the Knickerbockers to their first Eastern Conference finals since 2000. According to ESPN Research, Thib's led New York to 24 playoff wins which is 17 more than the team's past 13 coaches combined. Re-read the last sentence. Advertisement While Thib's isn't without flaws, it is hard to imagine the Knicks making a change despite the dysfunctional ownership. The Butcher made the NYK's relevant again while making the center of the basketball universe, Madison Square Garden, a high-energy home-court advantage again. I, along with the rest of the hoops community, will be watching what direction the organization goes. Broken Record. The Atlanta Braves do not get hits when runners are in scoring position. At an elite tennis center, two players with disabilities find their niche

I Forgot John Mulaney Was in This Movie in This Week's Netflix Top 10
Every week, Netflix unveils its Top 10 lists for the week before, ranking TV shows and movies by viewership. As someone who covers streaming content (and also just watches a lot of TV), I keep an eye on the titles that come and go, and am always curious what hits and what doesn't. Last week, John Mulaney's Netflix animated series Big Mouth premiered a new season, and his Netflix talk show Everybody's Live with John Mulaney aired its season finale, so I was curious if either would crack the Netflix Top 10. Neither did, but ironically, a third Mulaney-involved title — Puss In Boots: The Last Wish — was in the No. 5 spot on the Netflix movie chart to my surprise, mostly because I forgot that he was even in it. (Sure, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish also stars Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Harvey Guillen and Florence Pugh, but for the sake of argument, today it's a John Mulaney film.) Mulaney has been incredibly busy for the past few years, and it feels like the past two months reached peak Mulaney saturation: the eighth and final season of Big Mouth premiered on May 23, while his talk show Everybody's Live with John Mulaney aired its season finale on May 28 after running for 12 truly weird and unpredictable weeks. (For weeks, the show teased that the finale would feature Mulaney brawling with three 14-year-old boys. And yes, that fight did happen, rest assured no children were harmed.) Between both of his Netflix shows and recent appearances on Peacock's Poker Face and SNL 50, I think that his ubiquity is why I had forgotten all about his role as Jack Horner, the main villain in Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. It's certainly not because the role wasn't memorable, he actually stole every scene he was in as the narcissistic nursery rhyme character with an inferiority complex. Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, which debuted in theaters in 2022, is not actually available on Netflix in the U.S., which makes it even more impressive that it's dominating the Global Top 10 based on its popularity in Central and South America, where it peaked at No. 1 and has remained in the Top 10 film in dozens of countries for five weeks. DreamWorks Once I remembered Mulaney's pivotal role in the movie, I started to wonder, is this guy secretly Netflix's biggest star? He seems to have been given creative carte blanche on his talk shows and stand-up specials and, while his comedy can be niche, he also stars in projects with global appeal, so he very well could be. The streamer has deals with bigger names like Adam Sandler, Tyler Perry and Millie Bobby Brown, but I think Mulaney may be their ringer. He also starred in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which was only just removed from Netflix in April, he has seven comedy specials on the platform, and he pops up in everything from Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee to this month's Conan O'Brien's Mark Twain Prize for American Humor special. He's in so many things that somehow they managed to overshadow The Last Wish in my mind. But the film, which has made almost $500 million globally, is hardly under the radar. Maybe while it remains in the Top 10, it will give him a chance to take a well-deserved break from Netflix and just chill. At least for a little while, before he starts plotting who to grapple on season 2 of Everybody's Live.
