A former sheriff who was arrested for OVI pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

Former Champaign County Sheriff Matt Melvin pleaded guilty to one count of physical control on Monday, according to Champaign County Municipal Court records.

In the plea, he admitted to having physical control of a vehicle while under the influence.
Melvin was initially facing one count of operating a vehicle impaired (OVI).
According to court records, Melvin will be on community control for 1 year and owe a total of $472.
Melvin also got 60 days in jail, but he received credit for 3 days and the remaining 57 were suspended, according to court records.

As previously reported by News Center 7, an Urbana police officer stopped Melvin at approximately 1:12 a.m. on Dec. 18, 2024.
News Center 7 obtained body camera footage of the traffic stop and arrest.
Melvin refused to do a field sobriety test and was placed under arrest for OVI shortly after.
Chad Burroughs replaced Melvin as Champaign County Sheriff in January after winning the 2024 election.

Man, 19, charged with murder in relation to downtown Columbus shooting
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A 19-year-old man from Atlanta has been charged with murder in relation to a fatal shooting that took place in downtown Columbus last Saturday. An arrest warrant was issued for Mohamed Fofana on Friday in relation to the fatal shooting of Jusiah Mason, 18, according to Franklin County Municipal Court documents. Jail records indicate Fofana has not yet been taken into custody. Two more indicted in case of former Columbus teacher who helped make 'monkey crush' videos Fofana was in possession of a blue 2017 BMW X3 that was captured on video 'driving by' and 'shooting toward' Mason, court documents state. Fofana reportedly boarded a plane and flew back to Atlanta the day after the shooting. The deadly incident took place around 3:30 a.m. on June 14 in the area of South Ludlow Street and West Town Street. Mason was one of six people shot, and the lone victim hospitalized in critical condition. He was pronounced dead in the hospital on Sunday at 12:36 p.m. There were no other fatalities in the shooting. All victims were between 17 and 18 years old, according to police. About five minutes before the shooting, Columbus police officers were called to the area due to a large gathering of people and cars. Madison Lakes is not monitored, not maintained for recreational swimming, and not safe,' the department said in a release. 'We urge the public: Stop swimming in Madison Lakes.'
