Emotional Ronaldo rejoices in Portugal winning Nations League
Portugal skipper Cristiano Ronaldo shed tears of joy as they won their second Nations League title on Sunday, insisting that winning trophies with his country beats all club honours.
Ronaldo's 138th international goal in the second half took the final to penalties after a 2-2 draw with Spain, with the substituted 40-year-old forward looking on from the sidelines as Portugal netted all five spot kicks to claim the title.
The triumph, which left the five-time Champions League winner in tears, was Ronaldo's third on the international stage, accompanying his 2016 European Championship and 2019 Nations League winners' medals.
'What a joy,' Ronaldo told Sport TV. 'First of all for this generation, which deserved a title of this magnitude, for our families. My children came here, my wife, my brother, my friends.

Kaizer Chiefs launch transfers ahead of Netherlands tour
Kaizer Chiefs have wasted no time strengthening their squad as they prepare for a crucial pre-season tour to the Netherlands in July. With plans to return to domestic dominance, the club has made decisive moves in the transfer market, securing key targets and cutting loose those who no longer fit the vision under head coach Nasreddine Nabi, according to iDiski digital paper. After enduring a challenging first season, Nabi managed to end Amakhosi's long-standing trophy drought by lifting the Nedbank Cup in a high-stakes Soweto Derby, derailing Orlando Pirates' dreams of a historic cup treble. This hard-earned silverware has given Chiefs fresh impetus to restructure the team aggressively. 'Winning the Nedbank Cup was a turning point,' said a club insider. 'But the work has just begun.' In a ruthless shake-up, Sabelo Radebe, Njabulo Blom (following the end of his loan), and Ranga Chivaviro (whose option was not exercised for the 2025/2026 season) have all exited Kaizer Chiefs. Uncertainty looms over several others, including George Matlou, Teboho Potsane, Zitha Kwinika, Fiacre Ntwari, and Samkelo Zwane. Chiefs are reportedly considering loan deals for fringe players and emerging prospects as they balance squad depth with competitive edge. The club has set its sights on a number of fresh talents, including goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari, who could be heading to Azam FC in Tanzania, the very club from which Chiefs are chasing midfield maestro Feisul Salum. There were also early discussions surrounding a potential move involving Stanley Nwabali of Chippa United, but talks have seemingly stalled, with the Nigerian shot-stopper eyeing a European switch instead. Chiefs' interest in Ime Okon remains strong. The 21-year-old defensive ace is available on a free transfer and is seen as a major boost to Nabi's backline. However, they face stiff competition from rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, who rate him highly as one of the brightest young defenders in the PSL. Reports indicate that Thabiso Monyane signed with Amakhosi two weeks ago after his contract expired at Orlando Pirates. He might not be the only one making the switch across Soweto, Paseka Mako has also been linked to Chiefs, potentially forming a revamped full-back duo. Former Sundowns star Sipho Mbule is also on Chiefs' radar. His agent, Mike Makaab, confirmed that his client has been offered to the club following the expiry of his contract. A deal could bolster Nabi's midfield options with experience and creativity. Additionally, conversations have opened with several Europe-based Bafana Bafana internationals, who are weighing up returns to the South African top flight. Chiefs' growing ambition could make them an attractive destination. Finding a reliable target man has been a top priority for Nabi. With limited options locally, Chiefs are closing in on Etiosa Ighodaro. A powerful forward who has spent the last six years on the books of Sundowns, including loan spells at AmaTuks, Chippa United, SuperSport United, and AmaZulu. Now reportedly eligible for registration as a local player, Ighodaro is inching closer to a Naturena move. A source close to the club stated, 'He fits what Nabi wants up front, strength, movement, and goals.' Should Chiefs secure Ighodaro on a free, it could spark tensions with Chloorkop. But signal a major statement of intent from the Soweto giants. Who should Kaizer Chiefs sign for next season? Let us know by leaving a comment below or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Club World Cup: Win or lose, Mamelodi Sundowns in the MONEY
The four African qualifiers for the revamped Club World Cup in the United States are set to become much richer, no matter how they fare in the 32-team tournament. The tournament will run from 15 June until 13 July. By securing places, Al Ahly of Egypt, Esperance of Tunisia, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa and Wydad Casablanca of Morocco are each guaranteed $9.55 million (R169 million) appearance fees. The bonanza is the equivalent of Mamelodi Sundowns winning nine league titles in South Africa, the African country with the richest football prize money. A win in the group phase will add $2 million, a draw $1 million, and a top-two finish and qualification for the knockout phase $7.5 million. Winners of the premier African club competition, the CAF Champions League, receive $4 million for playing 14 or 16 matches. No side will play more than seven matches in the Club World Cup. Below, a look at the African contenders, all of whom have competed in the Club World Cup when it was an annual seven-club affair. Spaniard Jose Riveiro will make his competitive debut as coach of the Cairo Red Devils when they face Lionel Messi-inspired Inter Miami in the tournament opener on June 14. 'The best way to contain Messi is to stop the ball reaching him, but we also have a plan for him when he does receive possession,' said Riveiro. He left Orlando Pirates in South Africa in May after a three-season stint in which he won five domestic knockout trophies and reached the 2025 Champions League semi-finals. Ahly have been busy in the transfer market, signing former Aston Villa striker Mahmoud 'Trezeguet' Hassan from Turkish outfit Trabzonspor and winger Ahmed 'Zizo' Sayed from arch Cairo rivals Zamalek. The Blood and Gold from Tunis will be coached by one of their former stars, Maher Kanzari, after Romanian Laurențiu Reghecampf was axed in mid season having been in charge for only four months. Kanzari delivered a domestic league and cup double, but they made a timid exit from the Champions League in the quarter-finals. Esperance boast a star striker in Algerian Youcef Belaili, whose seven goals placed him second in the Champions League Golden Boot race. The four-time African champions have struggled in previous Club World Cup appearances, finishing fifth twice and sixth once. Sundowns are a club under a cloud after losing 3-2 on aggregate to Pyramids recently in a CAF Champions League final they were expected to win. It was the second successive Champions League final loss for Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso, who was in charge of Esperance when they lost the 2024 final to Ahly. Many Mamelodi Sundowns supporters were unhappy that Cardoso did not use fit-again veteran midfielder Themba Zwane in either leg of the title decider. Mamelodi Sundowns are captained by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who created history at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations by saving four shootout penalties to take South Africa past Cape Verde in a quarter-final. Masandawana have been drawn in relatively easy looking Group F alongside German team Borussia Dortmund, Brazil outfit Fluminense FC and little-known South Korean side Ulsan HD FC. Mamelodi Sundowns' matches are as follows (all times SA): Wednesday, 18 June vs Ulsan – 00:00 Saturday, 21 June vs Borussia Dortmund – 18:00 Wednesday, 25 June vs Fluminense – 21:00 The Casablanca outfit sacked South African coach Rhulani Mokwena as the Moroccan season drew to a close after he failed to secure a 2026 Champions League slot for the three-time continental champions. He was replaced by local Mohamed Benhachem, who transformed a team that had drawn six consecutive domestic league matches into one that ended the campaign by winning three in a row. Wydad have signed Burkina Faso midfielder Stephane Aziz Ki from Young Africans of Tanzania and Dutch defender Bart Meijers from Bosnia and Herzegovina club Borac Banja Luka. They are the only African contenders who will not face a Brazilian club in the group phase, but are not expected to advance from a section including Manchester City and Juventus. Ronwen Williams confident Sundowns can get out of group at Club World Cup
In a strong statement of intent, Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams believes they have what it takes to get out of their group at the 2025 Fifa Club World Cup in the US. The Brazilians are in Group F with Ulsan HD from South Korea, Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense from Brazil with matches taking lace in Orlando, Cincinnati and Miami respectively in the new format of the Club World Cup, which has been expanded from seven to 32 teams. Williams and his men start their campaign with a tricky clash against Ulsan at Inter & Co Stadium next week Wednesday where they will be looking for a good start before clashes against tougher Borussia and Brazilian outfit Fluminense. 'We believe we have enough to get out of the group, which will be huge for the club,' Williams said. We want to show people who Sundowns is at the competition.' Sundowns travelled to the US on the back of the Caf Champions League final to Egyptian side Pyramids FC. Williams said the Tshwane giants have put that disappointment behind them. 'We have used the recent few days of rest to reflect on the Champions League loss through our chats and most importantly it was important to stay away from each other because we played many games and travelled a lot this season. 'The past five days away from each other helped us to re-energise and get the spark back. It was devastating to take that defeat but we have to go again. We can't be mourning for too long, we have to be up for it because this is probably the biggest club competition. 'When we returned to training last week, you could see the energy and spark is back and those five days were good for us. It would have been perfect to wrap up the Champions League and go to the Club World Cup as continental champions. 'We could have gone with confidence but now we have to dig deep. It was probably the hardest defeat of my career and for the team because of how much we sacrificed and how hard we worked to get there. 'We said we would go all the way and do it but now we have to go back [to the drawing board] again. We have to lift ourselves, no-one is going to do it for us. 'While people are on holidays, we are on another flight and that is how amazing it is to be part of Sundowns because they are always looking at the next tournament.'
