Man arrested for raping woman on promise of marriage & forcing religious conversion

Indore: A case has been registered against a man for raping a woman on the promise of marriage, blackmailing her, and forcing her to convert her religion. The accused, Naushad Ali, a resident of Maharashtra, was arrested earlier and sent to jail under preventive actions by Sadar Bazaar police. Additional DCP Alok Sharma said that the woman approached the police on Monday, following which a case was registered. In her complaint, the woman accused him of hiding his identity, sexually exploiting her under the false promise of marriage, blackmailing her, and forcing her to convert her religion. Police said that the FIR was filed under BNS Sections 69, 308(2), 296, 115(2), 351(3), for rape on the promise of marriage, extortion, obscene acts and songs in public, voluntarily causing hurt, and criminal intimidation, and Sections 3/5 of the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 2021. Police identified the accused as Aman alias Naushad Ali Khan, son of Rafiq Sawri, a resident of the Sulwadi police station area in Mumbai, Maharashtra. According to the complainant, she first met the accused in 2013 during a bus journey between Indore and Manpur. Introducing himself as 'Aman', he claimed to be a live performer connected to music, which sparked their initial conversations. In 2018, while the woman was living alone in a flat in Indore, the accused allegedly took advantage of the situation and established physical relations with her under the pretence of marriage. However, whenever the topic of marriage came up, the accused avoided commitment. The woman eventually discovered the man's real identity after she came across his Aadhaar card, revealing his actual name to be Naushad Ali Khan. Upon confronting him, the accused allegedly assaulted her, hurled caste-based slurs, and issued threats, saying she would have to convert if she wanted to marry him. The FIR states that he blackmailed her with private photos and extorted between Rs 4 to 5 lakh online. He allegedly made it clear that unless she converted, he would ruin her reputation. On May 31, the accused allegedly followed her to her flat from Sarwate Bus Stand under the pretext of having tea and raped her again. The case sparked public attention when right-wing activists and members of the woman's community gathered outside the police station in support of the victim. Police also revealed that the accused is already married with four children, and his wife previously filed a dowry harassment case against him.

DK in race to become complete literate district

Mangaluru: To make Dakshina Kannada a completely literate district, the zilla panchayat has initiated a Google survey to ascertain the number of illiterates. Zilla panchayat CEO Anandh K said declaring Dakshina Kannada district as a completely literate district is a significant task. To achieve this, every citizen of the DK district must compulsorily provide information about illiterates in their households by scanning the QR code via Google and submitting the information by June 10, he said. "The sole purpose of the survey is to determine the total number of illiterates in the district, and the public should not be confused or fearful. Those who have already learned or are learning through the literacy department should not be included in the list. The department aims for Dakshina Kannada to be the first district in Karnataka to be declared completely literate," the CEO said. "If illiterates wish to learn, arrangements will be made for their education. Even if they are unable to learn, filling out the Google form is mandatory. The form must include details such as the illiterate person's name, the name of their taluk, village panchayat/town/municipality, the nearest school to their residence, father's name, mother's name, current address, age, gender, mobile number, Aadhaar number, caste, occupation, and whether they are differently-abled," he said. If the literacy rate exceeds 95%, then the district will be declared completely literate as per departmental orders. The CEO said that further information can be obtained from the District Adult Education Officer's office (0824-2451233).
