King to visit Canada for first time as head of state in 'impactful' trip
The King is preparing for a two-day visit to Canada - his first as the country's head of state.
The centrepiece will be on Tuesday when he will become only the second monarch, after his mother Queen Elizabeth II, to attend the state opening of parliament where he will set out the government's legislative agenda in a speech.
The 76-year-old will be accompanied by his wife the Queen during the short visit to the Commonwealth nation, which they hope will be "impactful", according to Buckingham Palace.
On Monday, the King, who is still undergoing treatment for an undisclosed cancer, is due to meet newly-elected prime minister and ex-Bank of England governor Mark Carney.
There will also be a short ceremony to swear in the Queen as a member of the Canadian Privy Council.
Earlier this month, Mr Carney told Sky News presenter Samantha Washington that Canadians "weren't impressed" by the decision of the UK government to offer Donald Trump an unprecedented second state visit to the UK.
Sir Keir Starmer handed the invitation to the US president .
Mr Carney said that the invitation "cut across clear messages" that the Canadian government was trying to send to the White House in response to their , including Mr Trump's idea for it to be America's 51st state.
The Canadian prime minister invited the King to open the country's parliament in a "clear message of sovereignty" and said it was "not coincidental".
"All issues around Canada's sovereignty have been accentuated by the president. So no, it's not coincidental, but it is also a reaffirming moment for Canadians," Mr Carney said.

'A momentous occasion'
The tour begins on Monday with the royal couple celebrating the country's cultural heritage and diversity at a Lansdowne Park community event in the capital Ottawa.
The late queen was the first sovereign to deliver the speech at the state opening of the Canadian parliament in October 1957, her first visit to the country as head of state.
Steven Guilbeault, Canada's minister of identity and culture, said: "His Majesty's delivery of the Speech from the Throne to open the 45th Parliament is a momentous occasion, one that brings Canadians together in celebration of our rich history, our democracy, and the institutions that serve us all.
"This visit offers an opportunity to showcase the special relationship between Canada and the Crown, while also highlighting the strength, diversity, and unity that define us on the world stage."

(Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he planned to double tariffs on steel and aluminium imports to 50% from 25%, starting from Wednesday, ratcheting up pressure on global producers and deepening his trade war. Here's a summary of the major trade partners it will affect. STEEL: Roughly a quarter of all steel used in the U.S. is imported, the bulk of it from neighbours Mexico and Canada or close allies in Asia and Europe such as Japan, South Korea and Germany. While China is the world's largest steel producer and exporter, it sends very little to the United States. Tariffs of 25% imposed in 2018 shut most Chinese steel out of the market. China exported 508,000 net tons of steel to the U.S. last year or 1.8% of total American steel imports. ALUMINIUM: For aluminum, the U.S. is more heavily reliant on imports. Roughly half of all aluminium used in the U.S. is imported, with the vast majority coming from Canada. At 3.2 million tons last year, Canadian imports were twice those of the next nine countries combined. The next largest sources of imports are the United Arab Emirates and China, at 347,034 and 222,872 metric tons, respectively. The U.S. aluminium smelting industry is small by global standards. Total smelter capacity in the country was just 1.73% of the global total according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Max Verstappen on the verge of F1 race ban after George Russell collision

Verstappen, who had just lost third place to Charles Leclerc after a safety car restart, was told by his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase to give fourth place to arch-rival Russell, after the pair briefly touched at turn 1. Advertisement The Red Bull driver initially moved over to allow Russell through before swerving aggressively into the Mercedes car. Verstappen was given a 10-second time penalty by the stewards straight after race, dropping him from fifth to tenth, though Nico Rosberg believed the Dutchman should have been disqualified. Yet one hour after the race concluded, Verstappen was given a further three penalty points on his FIA superlicence for the collision, bringing his total to 11 points. A race ban is triggered if a driver accrues 12 points over a 12-month period, as seen with Kevin Magnussen last year. It means Verstappen must avoid a penalty point at the next race in Canada (15 June) in order to avoid a ban for the Austrian Grand Prix (29 June). On 30 June, two of Verstappen's penalty points for a collision with Lando Norris last year in Austria will be wiped, bringing his total back down to nine.
