
Data of dead British children may have been deleted, TikTok boss says
Data from the TikTok accounts of four British children who their parents believe died after attempting a challenge on the platform may have been deleted, an executive from the firm said.
The families of Isaac Kenevan, Archie Battersbee, Julian 'Jools' Sweeney and Maia Walsh – all aged 12 to 14 – have sued TikTok and its parent firm ByteDance in the US in an effort to force the firm to release their children's data.
The wrongful death lawsuit claims the four died attempting a so-called 'blackout challenge', and said they want access to their children's account data to 'get answers' about how they died.
But Giles Dennington, senior government relations manager at TikTok, told BBC Radio 5 Live 'there are some things we simply don't have'.

After the lawsuit against TikTok was filed last week, Ellen Roome, mother of 14-year-old Jools, told the PA news agency that she had been trying to obtain her son's data from TikTok as she 'just wants answers' about his death and the data was 'the only piece that we haven't looked at'.
Ms Roome said she had been 'shocked' to learn that she 'wasn't entitled' to Jools' data, and was told by TikTok that a court order was required to release it.
She is now campaigning for legislation to grant parents access to their children's social media accounts if they die.
She told PA that it had been 'horrendously difficult' to 'not understand why' her son had died.
Asked why parents in these cases had not been able to access data, Mr Dennington said: 'This is really complicated stuff because it relates to the legal requirements around when we remove data and we have, under data protection laws, requirements to remove data quite quickly. That impacts on what we can do.'
He added that data protection requirements to remove data 'can impact on what is available' and that 'everyone expects that when we are required by law to delete some data, we will have deleted it'.
He said: 'So this is a more complicated situation than us just having something we're not giving access to.
'Obviously it's really important that case plays out as it should and that people get as many answers as are available.'
He said the social media firm has 'had conversations with some of those parents already to try and help them in that'.
The lawsuit filed on behalf of the parents accuses TikTok of pushing dangerous prank and challenge videos to children to boost engagement time on the platform.
According to TikTok, it does not allow content showing or promoting dangerous activity or challenges, and it proactively finds 99% of content which is removed for breaking these rules before it is reported to the firm.
Mr Dennington said the so-called 'blackout challenge' pre-dated TikTok and the firm has 'never found any evidence that the blackout challenge has been trending on the platform'.
'Indeed since 2020 (we) have completely banned even being able to search for the words 'blackout challenge' or variants of it, to try and make sure that no-one is coming across that kind of content,' he said.
'We don't want anything like that on the platform and we know users don't want it either.'
He added: 'This is a really, really tragic situation but we are trying to make sure that we are constantly doing everything we can to make sure that people are safe on TikTok.'

‘It's getting silly': The influencers teaching commuters how to fare-dodge
TikTok influencers are promoting fare-dodging on the London Underground in viral 'bumping' videos that have racked up millions of views. In dozens of videos seen by The Telegraph, TikTok users show off by pushing through the barriers at Transport for London (TfL) stations and other rail services, a practice known as 'bumping' on the app. One account holder had uploaded more than 50 videos of them skipping the barriers at different Underground stations. A video with 72,000 views celebrated 'bumping from London to Scotland by train'. Some clips have attracted hundreds of comments celebrating different techniques for squeezing through the barriers. Another with 128,000 views showed off 'TfL hacks', including codes for opening gates at stations. In one video, a masked TikTok user who has just jumped a station barrier says: 'At what age are we gonna stop bumping trains? It's getting silly.' He suggests he might start paying rail fares when he is 25. 'Normalised' Earlier this week, a government report found that rail staff feared fare-dodging had become 'normalised' and was viewed by offenders as a 'victimless crime'. A report from the Office of Road and Rail said: 'As well as occasional opportunistic fare evaders, there are some individuals who use a range of techniques to persistently underpay and avoid their fares.' Staff reported being met with 'aggressive and abusive behaviour' when trying to check the tickets of fare-dodgers. Some videos on TikTok showed fare-dodgers filming their interactions with station staff, goading them or trying to talk their way out of paying for fares. Robert Jenrick, the shadow justice secretary, said: 'There is an epidemic of fare-dodging in this country. Yobs are laughing at working people who do the right thing. It's a disgrace. I am sick to my back teeth of it – the authorities need to be shamed into action.' Last week Mr Jenrick filmed himself confronting fare-dodgers at Stratford Station amid growing public anger that petty crime is going unpunished. Writing for The Telegraph last week, he said: 'I watched as people flooded through an empty barrier, while the enforcement officer was on his backside, feet up, watching on. It was a perfect encapsulation of Broken Britain. 'For ordinary hard-working citizens travelling into work on their morning commute, the sight of somebody slipping through the barriers without paying is a slap in the face.' However, on TikTok, many commenters praised the barrier-jumpers, encouraging them to try to dodge-fares at other stations. Some videos included people vandalising the barriers at stations. One video seen by The Telegraph was captioned: 'My excuse for bumping is that I don't support TfL funding. Bumping is a choice, I'm not broke.' Some channels are entirely dedicated to 'bumping'. One explains to uses 'how to bump narrow gates' on National Rail. The video says to wait until there is an 'influx' so the 'guards are distracted and s---'. It then says fare-dodgers should 'scope out your victim', follow behind them and cover the sensor on the gate. The user says 'follow for more bumping guides'. £400m a year The Government has said that fare-dodging costs the taxpayer £400m per year. Failure to pay on the Underground can result in a £100 fine, although this is halved if paid within 21 days. Deliberately dodging fares is a criminal offence and can lead to a criminal record and fines of up to £1,000. Sir Sadiq Khan has been expanding a team of professional investigators at TfL to catch persistent fare-dodgers. The transport authority has a target of halving fare-evasion by 2030. It is estimated that passengers avoid paying for up to 3.4pc of all TfL journeys. TikTok has long struggled with users sharing videos of petty criminal activity or extreme pranks to bolster their online following. Last year, The Telegraph found evidence of gangsters advertising for cannabis farmers on TikTok. People smugglers have also used the app to recruit people for small boat crossings. Influencers have meanwhile undertaken increasingly extreme pranks, such as a wave of TikTok users posting videos of themselves trespassing in people's homes. After The Telegraph reported the videos to TikTok, the social media app took many of them offline. Siwan Hayward, TfL's director of security, policing and enforcement, said: 'Fare evasion is unacceptable. That is why we are strengthening our capability to deter and detect fare evaders, including expanding our team of professional investigators to target the most prolific fare evaders across the network. 'This builds on the work of our team of more than 500 uniformed officers already deployed across the network to deal with fare evasion and other anti-social behaviour, keeping staff and customers safe.'

Madeleine McCann search update as £300k police operation comes to an end
Investigators applauded and shook hands after three days of searching. Police and firefighters have wrapped up three days of searching scrubland and abandoned buildings in Portugal, as part of a £300,000 operation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in 2007. Officers were seen holding pitchforks as they scoured land on the outskirts of the Algarve town of Lagos on Thursday, June 5. Chainsaws, diggers and a ground-penetrating radar were also utilised. Investigators, who came from both Germany and Portugal, congratulated and embraced each other at the conclusion of the searches in Atalaia, which saw samples of potential evidence taken, WalesOnline reports. Those involved carried out a debrief before leaving the area, with a round of applause before a crate of German beer was produced from the base tent. The blustery conditions meant they struggled to dismantle some of their tents. British police officers were not involved in these searches, the Metropolitan Police confirmed. The latest search efforts, 18 years after Madeleine's disappearance in Praia da Luz, were requested as part of the German authorities' ongoing attempts to gather evidence to implicate prime suspect Christian Brueckner, who is behind bars for the rape of a 72-year-old woman in the same area in 2005. Her parents Kate and Scots-born Gerry were dining with friends at a restaurant 100 yards away while the children slept. Staff from the Find Madeleine Campaign said Kate and Gerry had not commented during the "active police investigation". In 2023, further searches were conducted near the Barragem do Arade reservoir, around 30 miles from where Madeleine went missing. Christian Brueckner spent time in the area between 2000 and 2017, documented in photos and videos of himself near the reservoir. Brueckner is expected to be released from prison this September if no further charges are brought against him.

Brit, 73, strangled to death abroad with own belt in horror mobile phone robbery
Retired Brit Karl Lauks, 73, was brutally killed on his driveway when he was strangled with his own belt after coming home from the pub, in South Africa - police said a 29-year-old has been arrested A retired British engineer who moved to South Africa was horrifically strangled to death using his own belt in a tragic ambush. Karl Lauks, 73, had returned home after a trip to his local pub but a waiting killer attacked him in his own driveway, in the town of Tulbagh, 70 miles north of Cape Town. The Brit - who went to South Africa over 20 years ago for work and fell in love with the place so never returned to live in the UK - was ambushed just after he parked his Smart car at home, on Sunday evening. He was beaten before he could step away from the wheel of his car and the attacker took Karl's leather belt off him. The killer is believed to have used the Brit's scarf to silence him by shoving it into his mouth during the brutal attack. This cold-blooded criminal reportedly then took Karl's belt and wrapped it around his neck, suffocating him to death. The attacker then took the retired engineer's phone, the belt, his wallet and house keys before dashing away from the driveway and leaving the 73-year-old dead in the car. A spokesperson for Western Cape Police revealed a 29-year-old has been arrest on suspicion of murder in the shocking case and that they appeared at a local magistrates court. This had also shockingly been the fourth time in six months that the Brit's phone had been stolen. Karl, from Bradford, was only found after a neighbour noticed the gate to his house and car door were unusually left open, on Monday. Described as the "life and soul" of his adoptive town, his cousin Tessa Muller said his tragic death was "truly horrible". Tessa, a chef at the Tulbagh Hotel, was called and asked to check on the Brit, on Monday. She told the local outlet Netwerk24: "When I got there and saw the security gate and his car door open I knew that was not like him and feared the worst as I walked up and looked inside. "I knew he was dead right then and there when I saw the scarf in his mouth and his eyes wide open and I knew I must not touch anything and I called the police. Karl was loved and probably one of the best know person in Tulbagh and would always be out and about having breakfast with us then his lunch at Herholdt's Pub. "There was not a single day he ever stayed in and he was the life and soul of everywhere he went but as he got older the locals watched over him the best they could. For this very gentle man to meet his end like this is just truly horrible." A close friend and fellow drinker at the local pub said: "Karl lit his place up and a number of other bars in Tulbagh and now his regular seat is sitting there empty." The friend added that Karl has been badly beaten up in another robbery last year, leading him to get a pit bull for protection. He added: "He got a pit bull to protect himself at night but kept it indoors to stop him barking and I guess the robber knew that and attacked Karl before he could get in the front door. Everyone here looked out for him and watched him home if they could to get him in safely but that could not happen 24/7 and on Sunday his killer I guess was just waiting." Karl's friend revealed the Brit's wife had died following a battle with cancer 15 years ago and he had lived alone ever since.
