Dubai arrests a gang impersonating 'Consumer Protection' employees
The Anti-Fraud Centre at the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation of the Dubai Police has warned the public of the potential for fraudulent activities. It has been observed that individuals have been receiving calls purporting to be from official authorities.
These calls request that customers update their personal data or provide confidential information such as their bank account details. It has been determined that these calls are fraudulent in nature and are intended to deceive the recipient into divulging their financial information, including sensitive details such as the CVV number and One-Time Password (OTP).
The purpose of this deception is to facilitate the fraudulent acquisition of funds from the victim's bank account.
The Dubai Police have successfully arrested a gang that had developed a novel method of impersonating 'Consumer Protection' employees. Through a series of strategic calls, the criminals were able to deceive a number of citizens and residents, falsely claiming to be an official body before requesting access to the UAE PASS' application and requesting updates to their personal data.
By exploiting this vulnerability, the perpetrators were then able to gain unauthorised access to the victims' bank accounts, subsequently leading to the theft of significant sums of money.
The Dubai Police explained that the gang members had employed a range of sophisticated fraudulent methods to successfully convince their victims to provide them with confidential information, most notably bank card data.
This was achieved by exploiting the trust that people place in official authorities, with the aim of withdrawing money from the accounts without the owners' knowledge.
The Anti-Fraud Centre entrusted a task force to apprehend the perpetrators. Through meticulous investigation, the task force was able to identify the perpetrators' locations and subsequently apprehend them in possession of the equipment utilised in these illicit activities.
Dubai Police have issued a warning to the public, urging them to exercise extreme caution when dealing with individuals requesting personal or confidential data, particularly those purporting to be from official entities or financial institutions.
The warning specifically advises against disclosing such information, citing the potential for fraudulent activities such as 'updating data' under false pretenses.
Members of the public are hereby requested to report instances of cyber fraud by visiting the nearest police station and using the 'E-CRIME' platform. This platform is specialised in receiving reports of this nature and can be accessed via the following electronic address: www.ecrime.ae

Dubai Police have called for caution when travelling on scooters or crossing the road after the force announced 13 deaths involving jaywalkers and e-scooter riders in the first five months of 2025. Ministry of Interior figures show Dubai Police issued 35,233 fines for jaywalkers in 2024. Maj Al Mazrouei said this indicated that many people still endanger others by acting recklessly on the roads. 'Jaywalkers and misusing scooters are among the biggest challenges [in terms of road safety], especially in populated areas,' he said. Under-16s are not allowed to use an electric bike or e-scooter on Dubai roads and anyone riding an e-scooter must have a permit from the Road and Transport Authority. 'Traffic safety is a joint responsibility. Breaching traffic laws can cause accidents," said Maj Al Mazrouei. Police said a Dh300 ($80) fine will be imposed on those caught riding dangerously on electric bikes or e-scooters, or travelling on roads reserved for cars with a speed limit exceeding 60kph. In the UAE, jaywalkers can be fined Dh400 and drivers who do not give way to pedestrians at zebra crossings could receive a Dh500 fine and six black points on their licence. Dubai: 13 people died in jaywalking, scooter accidents during first five months of 2025
Thirteen people have died in Dubai from January to May this year due to jaywalking and scooter misuse, Dubai Police revealed on Friday. In 2024, Dubai recorded 254 e-scooter and bicycle-related accidents, resulting in 10 fatalities and 259 injuries, 17 of which were serious. Over the past five months, Dubai Police said they issued 28,027 fines for jaywalking and seized 15,029 scooters. Authorities said these are their strong response 'to the urgent need to curb unsafe behaviours' as improper crossings and scooter misuse led to 13 fatalities from January to May this year. Concerned parents and residents have raised the issue with Khaleej Times that the number of electric bikes and e-scooters being recklessly operated by unlicensed teenagers is on the rise. In February this year alone, two e-scooter-related deaths occurred in a span of just three days — both involving minors aged 15 and nine. Whether riding alone or in groups, these minors are seen navigating busy roads and traffic lanes with little to no experience, often ignoring traffic laws and without any parental supervision, concerned individuals noted. The violation is punishable by a Dh400 penalty but jaywalkers could face imprisonment and a fine of Dh5,000 to Dh10,000 — if the offence results in a traffic accident. Higher penalties will be imposed on any person who crosses from undesignated areas with a 80kmph speed limit or higher. They will be punished with imprisonment for a period of not less than three months and a fine of not less than Dh10,000, or by one of these two penalties. Maj-Gen Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, acting assistant commandant for operations at Dubai Police, said they are 'actively conducting awareness and educational campaigns, in cooperation with the Roads and Transport Authority, to enhance traffic awareness among all community members, especially youth and visitors in commercial and residential areas, to foster a culture of law compliance and ensure everyone's safety.' He urged the public to use pedestrian bridges and designated crossings and follow guidelines for e-scooter use to improve traffic flow and protect lives.
